It's So Possible - A Conversation with Angie Lee
19 Sept 2019 · 44 min
Melissa Dlugolecki talks with entrepreneur and coach Angie Lee about building businesses, overcoming grief, and the role of vulnerability in coaching. They discuss Angie's CBD line, masterminds, and live events for women entrepreneurs.
Hello friends and welcome to Grief Guts and Green Smoothies.
I am your host Melissa Dugalecki and.
I am so excited to be here with you all to chat about ways.
In which we can all get through different adversities, challenges and loss and how.
Getting outside of our comfort zone and maybe having a green smoothie or two can help us do so.
We will cover different topics ranging from interviews to recipes to sharing my own.
Stories of my grief journey and the.
Loss of my daughter Layden. Honor to be able to share her.
Light in hopes of helping you spread yours. Now let's dive in.
Have you ever been absolutely petrified about a change or a leap or a decision that you're making? Well, if so, or if you've teetered with making that decision but still haven't gotten there, this episode is absolutely for you as I am sharing the behind the scenes and having a conversation with the very person who I made one of those decisions with. Angie Lee is not only hilarious, but she's a self made entrepreneur who was six figures in debt, quit her cubicle job and went for pursuing her dreams. She ignored the voices of doubt surrounding her everywhere and trusted her voice within. She will talk at length about how anything is possible regardless of what fear gremlins, as she calls them, creep into our minds. And not only does she talk about it, but she lives it. One of my favorite stories about Angie is how she sold a car to go to Tony Robbins. And so she means it. She doesn't just say if you want something, you will do it. Not only does she say it, she has lived it and it has certainly paid off for me. Angie was a program that I invested in when I knew I wanted something more than being in education. I wasn't sure what it looked like. I had spent over a year doing juicing workshops, talking all about gut health, setting up literally carrying mason jars into my church, handing out flyers and setting up workshops to educate people about gut health. Again, Gut Health was something I only studied because I lost my daughter Laden.
To a sick gut.
So it was really important to me and I felt this calling to spread gut Health and then also to pursue life coaching to help other people feel their best and teach them the strategies that I learned after being completely shattered and overwhelmed and exhausted when losing Leiden. And so when I was at a transitional point, a crossroads, trying to figure out where I was going to go. You know, I loved education, teaching, coaching. I wanted to do it in a different format and a different path. I stumbled on Angie Lee's podcast and I Think I listened to about three or four episodes and something resonated and.
I was like, this woman has a lot of value to offer.
There is something calling me there. I need to know more. I messaged Angie on Instagram to ask her if she did much around grief or gut health.
And she was really clear that was.
Not what she did. I still wanted to learn more. I went to her website, I looked it up.
I found out that there was a.
Mastermind that had started just the week before. Absolutely petrified, excited. Am I really doing this? I pulled out my credit card again. I was at a transitional point in my life. I was in no position to to be making this investment and that's actually what made it exactly the right time to do it. I went on, looked at her mastermind, decided to do it, thought, this is going to be what gets me to finally figure it out. Ran my credit card, wanted to vomit when I did, wanted a refund after. Saw it through and it changed everything. So I hope as you listen to this dialogue, this conversation of Angie and I going back and forth from where I was at that point to where I am now, to her own journey, to things that we have coming up and our advice for anyone here who is thinking about how do I do it, I hope that you take away this idea and this message, this reminder that it is so possible. Now let's dive in.
I am beyond excited for today's episode and to welcome Angie Lee to the podcast. Angie, welcome.
Hello. I'm so excited to be here, Melissa.
I know, it's so great. And so, Angie, I always open with two questions. What does grief, guts and green smoothies mean to you?
Woo. Well, one, I love the 3G alliteration. It's so friggin awesome. Honestly, to me, and I've told you this before years ago, but the gut is our second brain. So I don't think it's a coincidence that your company is focused on healing and gut health and the physical parts of health and wellness, but you're really focusing on tapping into those emotions. And when someone's overcoming grief or sadness and they're dealing with things like depression or mental health, the gut is the first place to focus on. So I think it's really cool that all of your stuff is about basically tapping into that intuition and listening to your gut and then healing your gut. And I just, I love that it all plays on each other. So when I hear that, I think of healing. That's really the word that comes through for me.
I love that. And so powerful. Because that healing on that emotional and that physical level. So true. And they go together. And then the other one, this is really the most important one. Your favorite kind of taco fish. Okay.
Yes, Fish taco.
Oh, my gosh.
What about you? What's yours?
I go back and forth, but recently it's been a shrimp and mushroom taco. Okay, yeah, big fan of that. But I had a scallop taco in Nantucket this summer, and it's like life before and after that taco.
Oh, my gosh. Scallops. Oh, my God, that's. That's delish. It's really good.
Oh, I love it.
I love it, I love it.
I know there's so many different layers to it, but just in general, can you share your journey and how you've gotten to the work that you're doing now?
Yeah, it's been a long journey. It's been 10 years now of putting content out and really sharing my story. And 10 years ago, I had this idea to start a wellness blog in college. And I didn't realize at the time that it would turn into the brand and the business that I have today, but I just knew I wanted to share. I wanted to share wellness tips, mindset tips, and holistic health tips with women and fitness and fat loss, and that was really my passion back then. And slowly over time, I stayed really consistent with videos and podcasting and blogging, and it built this loyal tribe. Right. Because anything you stick with for 10 years will eventually it pays off and it builds a loyal tribe. And so my passion to share has always been there, and it really will never leave me. And then over time, what happened is a lot of the health and wellness coaches that were following me were wondering how I was monetizing as a health and wellness coach. So then my coaching and my business shifted into me coaching wellness coaches how to monetize. So that organically kind of just happened. It wasn't really the plan. And now here I am teaching marketing, sales. I have a CBD line, I have an event, I have a podcast. I kind of do a bunch of things now, but in the beginning, that's really how it all started, was just a silly wellness blog. And now it's just all of these.
Crazy things and you have so many great stories, but just that idea of you walked away, you walked away from almost finishing this really intricate high level nutrition program, and you were like, this is not how I'm meant to serve this world. Mm, mm, mm.
Absolutely. I think that it was the scariest Thing to leave college and take that risk. But, I mean, it was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Yeah, I love that. And that's actually what I always say when I talk about joining your mastermind. And it's so funny because we talk a lot about the universe and just, like, crazy things happening and, you know. You know, my journey with Layden and prior to joining your mastermind, I had my ways of investing in myself was like, through grief coaching, and I had a grief coach, but it was like I lived my life, or I was, you know, working through my grief and kind of working on that, and I was sharing a little bit here and there and speaking, but it felt really scary. And, you know, all these things fell into place and out of place and, you know, bizarre, hilarious, crazy things. And I somehow found your podcast, and I think I just reached out to you, and my first question was, do you do anything around grief coaching? And you're like, no. Like, that's not really. Like, this is what I do. I was like, I really. I just. There's something about her energy. Like, I really want to work. There's something that's just feeling right. I don't think I hadn't been following that long at all. You know, you have one of the most, if not like, the most loyal for good reason, you know, tribes that I know and that I get to be a part of. But at this time, I wasn't in that. But there was just something that said, like, no, you need to listen to this voice saying, yes. And I messaged you, and your mastermind was starting, like, that day or the night before or something. And I just. I always talk about, this was the first time I really felt like I took that jump. I ran my credit card. I wanted to throw up after, and I was like, holy shit, am I really doing this? It was like, yep, here we go.
You're like, yup, 100%. And that was such an awesome class, and I loved how honest and bold you were the whole time. And, yeah, it takes a lot of courage to share your story around grief and what you've gone through. And I just remember thinking that that was actually one of the most interesting and brave stories in our entire class, because I can't imagine what you went through and be able to share that with people to then help them now. I mean, that. That's a lot of. That's. That's bravery, and that's what I love to teach. So I love that you're strong enough to do that.
Well, it's funny because while you. You really teach, you know, the business aspects and the sales and the marketing, like, you know, you're definitely a sales ninja. And we can talk more down the road and how, you know, whether the mastermind or the event has completely transformed my own businesses and work. But I think one thing that you do really, really well is coaching people to kind of be bold and own their stories and teaching them how to do that without the fear of what whoever might say or questions that people might have. So I'm just wondering what advice you can share with listeners who maybe are a little bit more afraid to own their story or they feel levels of shame or guilt or embarrassment around them.
Yeah, it's so crazy because I didn't really plan to teach on bravery a lot, and now it's really become my favorite thing to coach on. And the real deal is when you own a personal brand and when you want to be a content creator or a life coach and really monetize online as this consultant or this coach, you have to put your life out there. And a lot of women are terrified to share their. Their story and to be vulnerable. And the reality is that authenticity and that vulnerability is the most attractive thing in humans. And so knowing that if you're going to be paid to be yourself, right, and you want to be paid to be you and to share your gifts and your voice and your message, then you have to share the parts of you that are embarrassing or the parts of you that aren't amazing and perfect, too. And I think that that's what makes a strong personal brand, is someone that is willing to go to the depths with people and to really share that they're not perfect and to take them on the journey of the pain as well. And that's really what I wish more people would share. And I wish that more people were brave enough to just own where they're at and know that they don't have to have someone else's life, they just have to share their own. Right? But it's terrifying, right? Especially on social media, you're getting. I mean, there's trolls on the Internet. There's all that crap. You're getting backlash with it. But one of the most incredible feelings in the world is authenticity. Nothing feels better than being authentic. And I don't think anything helps more with confidence and feeling beautiful and amazing than being real and being you. And so if we're creating this fallacy online that everything's perfect or that we don't have any stories, I think that's when marketing and everything gets boring anyway. Right. Because who really has that perfect life? So, yeah, it's now been one of my passions to really help people just own their shit and own what they do, because life is short. And why not share it? And you never. I mean, you know this. I think as humans, we forget how powerful our story is and we underestimate the potential of our story changing someone's life. And we don't realize that even if our message only hits one person, well, the butterfly effect is that they're going to go share that with one person, and then they're going to go share that with one person. So it's almost your duty and your responsibility to share your pains and the things you've gone through that now you've mastered, because that's really what the world needs. It needs people who have overcome something and can now be a teacher, in a sense. And I think that we underestimate the power of story and vulnerability, and we don't realize that sharing stories is what changes the world. It really does. So I'm so glad that you do that, because not enough people are doing that.
And it was hard. It was a big part of what I learned, you know, in the mastermind, and I think really embraced, maybe more at peace to be brave. But, you know, I do remember at one point saying, yeah, I'm in for this whole sharing thing, but I just don't really want to be niched down. Niched down. I don't even know how to say it, Angie. Still, I should know that by now. But niched down in grief, I was really afraid of that. And here we go a year later. And my podcast is Grief, Guts and Green Smoothies. My Instagram handle has changed to, you know, guts and grief. And I think what I was able to do was find that place, you know, with the work that we did and owning my own story, but not having to make it about grief, but what my story has taught me that I can now share with other people.
Yeah. And I think it's something that is. Here's the thing with people online sharing their stories, everyone thinks that they're afraid to share their story because it could sound like it's just sharing their dirty laundry or it's just a depressing account that's like, oh, my gosh, I've had shit happen to me. And then that's not really empowering anyone, the reader or the writer. So I believe that the smartest thing to do is to come from a place of empowerment, like, hey, I'VE gone through this shit. This is the pain I've gone through. But let me show you how I've overcome that. Let me show you how I came out on the other side. Let me show you at least few of the tips or the things that I've learned from this pain. And then it's coming from a place of empowerment versus just sharing to get pity or attention. You know what I mean?
Yes. Like sharing to empower, just like you said, rather than, like, you know, sharing to bring that focus back to us or to ask about that. And I think when you can find that sweet spot, then that's when it's really, really powerful. And you have to. You constantly be aware of it. You know, like, what's the intent, where I'm sharing? What impact am I trying to make? Who do I. Who am I going to help?
100%. Yeah. I think you have to think about the one person that you want to serve, and you have to ask yourself, am I in a place where I can now truthfully and in a healthy state, can I now share what I've learned from this experience?
Yeah. So powerful. And so you mentioned that you have all these different hats going on right now. I am not a quiet soul CBD consumer. In fact, I'm staring at it right now. I love my soul.
So can you tell?
Let everyone know what you're up to. I mean, Angie, you, I think, sometimes are so humble, but you have built really successful businesses, and you continue to do that. But what I think is really powerful is how you evolve with what's right and authentic for you at different times and how you can serve. It's like you find that sweet spot and you're aware that that sweet spot changes. And I think too often people try and hold on and just stay in the same spot. But if we're growing and evolving and we're our personal brand, well, then our brand's got to grow and evolve, too.
Aw, thank you. That means so much to me. And it's been such a crazy ride because I've always wanted to have a physical product in the wellness space, and I just never knew what it would be and I didn't know when. But it kind of came as this unexpected, beautiful miracle in my life, I should say. And I fell in love with cbd, and my brother fell in love with it as well as a professional athlete. And we came together one day, and he was like, do you think we should go into the CBD space? And I was like, oh, my gosh. I wasn't planning on this, but let's do this. Why not attack this space? And our love for CBD was just so strong that at that point, we had already been telling all of our friends and family about it anyway. So we were like, well, we might as well just share it now publicly on. So, yeah, it has been a crazy ride. It wasn't sexy, it wasn't perfect. My brother and I didn't know a lot about CBD when we started, to be honest with you. And I believe that the most successful entrepreneurs and business owners have realized that they don't need to know everything. And if anything, they're actually not the person who knows the most about that product. They usually then hire a CEO or COO who can execute and implement and integrate and really create that business vision. But the visionaries and the founders of companies are usually the people who just know that the product is going to change lives. And I had been in love with CBD for two to three years prior to the launch for anxiety as an entrepreneur. Mike had been in love with it for pain management as an athlete. And so when we came together one day, it kind of just made sense that we would start a physical product line together and we would do this. And it's been such an amazing journey and process, not only building a company with my brother and someone that I love, and he's such a great. Not only co founder with me, but a great friend. And that's been amazing. But it's been cool to now be in a different space. The cannabis space is awesome. And I believe in the plants so much, and I believe that it's changing the world and it's going to continue to change how people deal with pain. And that's our biggest. Our biggest mission with Soul cbd, and we just had a marketing meeting about this last week, was to get people out of pain and to get them out of pain naturally, because there are a lot of harmful medications out there that can work and they can work temporarily, but they're extremely toxic to the body and to your organs, and they have harmful side effects. And what's beautiful about CBD is there's no toxicity levels and it's something that you couldn't. It's something that's been used for thousands of years for pain management and for anxiety. So it just made sense for us to dive into that space.
Yeah, I love that. Well, I'm pretty grateful that you did.
Aww. Yay. That makes me so happy.
Yeah. And I think you bring up an important note about the Natural health and holistic health, you know, much. And I coach that in move, which is kind of funny because that involves my brother as well, but not from such a collaborative standpoint, just that much. And I only met because my brother was hungover and puked in her boot camp class. But, I mean, he likes to take a little bit of credit for building the business as well, so I like to give it to him where I can.
Oh, I love that.
What we coach, it's all natural, right? And understanding what we put into our bodies and the impact that it has on our organs, on toxins, on brain functioning, on pain management. And so much of what people are encouraged to take for whether it's pain management or whether it's, you know, a stomach ache are things that make it worse down the road. And they have no idea because they're just trusting what they're told. Mm.
Yeah. And they're just believing what the. I mean, gosh. I mean, what doctors are telling them. Right. And a traditional MD has not really studied nutrition. A traditional MD Is not studied plants and plant medicine. A traditional MD Is not really the person to ask about things like that because they're making a buck every single time that they prescribe you a prescription. So I just. It's such a painful thing to watch that's going on in our world because the medical system is just so messed up. But, yeah, I think that's where CBD really comes in and has its place. You know, it's something that I can't legally right now say that it cures anything or fixes anything, but I can definitely say it's something that I believe every human should at least be open to trying and seeing if it can help to alleviate their pain.
Yeah, I second that as well.
Yay. I love it.
So looking ahead, I know you've got pace to be brave coming up. I would love to chat about that. I don't know if you have any questions for me in terms of, like, the attendees experience.
Yes, yes.
We're transitioning from mastermind to that, but let's talk it out.
Yeah, let's jam on it. Oh, I can't believe it's coming so soon. It's crazy. Oh, my God. It's driving me to drink all the wine, you guys, and kombucha, and drink all the cbd. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. I'd love to hear your thoughts on just the transformation and really how much it impacted you and how much you loved it or just kind of like your experience being on the other side of it, obviously, I'm only on one side of it, so it's hard for me to know the other side.
Yeah, well, just. It was a really. It's been an amazing transformation. I mean, it was like step one, essentially, was the mastermind, right? And first experiencing what it's like to invest in, you know, yourself. And I feel like that's when a lot was ignited and the ideas were swirling and the strategies and tactics were kind of learned and worked out. But going to pays to be brave. It was like this shift from internal to external, right? So, like, internally having to, like, figure it all out and what works, but then going to a live event where.
You'Re hearing speaker after speaker who have.
Done this or overcome a certain thing, or sharing their skills or their talents, talking with other, you know, women who are pursuing their dreams, it's just. It kind of took everything from thought and idea. And I love, love Sahara Rose, who was there last year, but, you know, she talks about, like, the ayurveda, that transformation from vata to pitta to kapha, right? The thought to action, to reflection. And I think it just really like the live event when you're there, it just is like in the fire of that pitta of getting yourself to take action. It's. It's hard to put into words. I don't know if I'm explaining it well at all, but it just takes something that may be ignited or sparked in somebody, and I think it really offers the opportunity to set that on fire. I love that.
That's so amazing. That's so amazing. Yeah, it's really the vision with the event is to have it be something like that. I love that you said that to set people on fire, because that's kind of the goal or the mission that I have. So I love that that's really how you articulated it, is giving people that fire and giving people that permission slip to go live their best life, you know, And I think that's what I think. Majority of women just need a permission slip. And I know that's what I needed. It's not that they don't know. It's not that they don't have the skill set. It's not that they don't have the knowledge. It's that they actually don't think they can do it. And they want to hear that they can do it and be reminded that they are enough and they can execute and they can do it. And so I think that I'm really just a mirror for them to See what's possible. And I think I'm just a permission slip, you know? Yeah.
I mean, I'd give yourself more credit than that, Angie, but what you're really good at doing is. Yeah. Holding up that mirror and giving people the permission slip. But, you know, I think you also show that it's possible, and you show that it's possible through I don't even know how many examples last year. Right. And not, you know, with all the different speakers and stories and experiences. And I think that's powerful because one style or one story may not resonate, you know, but somebody's is going to. And that could be the story that gets you, that just something just clicks. Yep.
Yep. I love that. Yeah. And I think that that was the power of having so many speakers last year that were in such different spaces is that everybody. Each person in the audience could relate to somebody and what they've gone through. Yeah.
And too often, you know, we. And this was me previously. In general, like, we just kind of want things to change or we hope it's gonna change. But I think the beauty of, like, these live events is you're immersing yourself in a culture, in a space where change is happening, and you're actually, like, taking ownership of what you want to create rather than kind of wishing for it to happen.
Yeah. Yeah. And I think it's a good place to not only dream, and that's great, and dreaming is great, but to actually take that action and to make that action plan and say, this is what I'm going to do. This is the next step I'm going to take. Even if it's messy, even if it's imperfect, this is what I'm going to take.
Yeah. 100%.
Yeah. I'd love to know a little bit more on how even, gosh, your business has evolved and changed so much. And if you could really even brainstorm or get kind of nitty gritty on what has really been the key factors for you as far as your growth and what really has been. This could be maybe a few mental things that you had to overcome and then some tangible things that you really had to work on or had to overcome as far as growing your business in the last, gosh, year and a half.
Yeah. Crazy to think about. And I actually think everything really kind of changed after the event. You know, I came back and so we talk about my business. So I have two and one where I am. I'm life coaching, and I work with men and women, you know, age 20 to. In their 60s and really helping them through transition and then move with Mooch. We do the mindset, the physical fitness and the gut health and you know, when I got back from the event, like we had a conversation and I had my own conversations, like, all right, what do we really want here? Like, what are we going to do? Are we going to, you know, are we really going to dive in and level up? And since doing that, my life coaching business is grown five times. So, you know, it's five times as lucrative as it was before are. I know, it's crazy.
And I didn't pay you to be brave.
Yeah.
Oh my gosh, that's so flipping cool.
Five times.
I mean I was looking at my clients and you know, and just what it was working before. So yeah, it's five times as much move from that time we decided. So we went and worked further in our business. We got, you know, some additional coaching. We really committed to it. We stopped making, you know, not that we were making excuses, never say we were making excuses, but we stopped letting anything get in the way. It was like more justifications. Like we just didn't even let justifications get in the way. Like we were just all in. And we built a six figure business in five months after that online with zero paid ads.
Wow, that's amazing.
Yeah, so amazing.
So a big part of it, a big part of it was the mental.
Aspect 100% and also just recognizing like it's possible, like what are the resources we could employ each day and how much we were going to value or how much we were going to value investing in ourselves and the business for our business to then take off.
Wow.
So speak to the woman right now who's listening who has just started her online business and she's feeling frustrated and she wants to get to that six figures online and maybe she's coming to Paisley brave this year. So get ready sista, because I'm going to light a fire under your booty. But aside from that, but aside from that, what would you say to her as far as the mental piece? And then we'll dive into the tangible steps.
Yeah, I would just say believe, trust. You don't have to know what it's going to look like. Detach from it. Having to look a certain way and just show up every single day so committed to doing the very best you can, to taking advantage of opportunities that are in front of you, to not leading with fear, to lead with possibility. And if you do that every single day and you're truly in a place where you're serving people well where you're making impact. It's absolutely going to take care of itself.
I love that. Do you feel that getting over money blocks was a huge deal for you guys or pricing objections and was that a huge part of the mindset for you guys?
It was a huge part. And I think we don't even use the word price tag anymore. It's just value and investment. What's the value of something? What's the investment of something?
Yeah, I love that. And I believe that confidence just comes with time and it comes with clients. And that's not the sexy answer that women want to hear. But you build confidence once you have seen that what you do works and you can get results. So the goal is to just stay so consistent until you get those clients and then you can build that confidence. Right? Yeah.
And, you know, it's a disservice to people to offer them massive transformation with minimal investment, to be honest, because they have to get the investment like they have to be invested to get that roi. And whether it's time, whether it's, you know, in different ways, whether it's financial, it's, you know, I believe that when I help somebody understand that they're worth investing in themselves for that we've just overcome a huge hurdle right there. And now we can take off.
I love this. I love is such a huge. I'm just so glad you said that because it is such a huge disservice when we don't share what we do. And it's weird that we don't think that way. We think, oh, well, I have this thing that I want to sell and oh my gosh, I have to ask someone for money. And that's so awkward. And it's almost as if we see it as a win lose situation. Like we're going to win and they're going to lose, but it's really a win win. And the best sales transactions are a win win. They're receiving value, they're receiving your gift, your life coaching, and then you gals are receiving the energy of money back. It's just a simple energy exchange. Right. But we take it so seriously and we make it way more complicated than it needs to be.
No 100%. Yeah. And I think just kind of like demystifying it. Like it's just, it's a value exchange. Like you said, it's a win win. And so that was definitely a huge mental part for us. And then I would also say just knowing it's possible.
Right.
And you have the choice every day when you put your energy and you can choose to put it to what might go wrong, or you can put it to what might go right. And I think focusing on the things that are going to go right when you focus there, that's what grows.
Yeah, I love that. What do you focus on expands. What you focus on grows. What tangible things did you guys do in your business? Or what would be the big tweaks or shifts or actions that you gals took every day to really move the business forward? And what finally had you guys hit six figures? Was it increasing prices? Was it the quality of your content? Was it niching down? What do you feel like it really was if you had to list it out?
Oh, that's such a good question. I need to phone in Mooch. Phone a friend. You know, I'm sure we'd say the same things, but, you know, we were pretty niching down. I think we had. We had that done that well. But increasing what we offered in the content, like up leveling the coaching, increasing the investment, so not worried as much about offering a space for everybody to receive transformation as much as for the people who really needed what we offered to receive transformation being okay, being a little bit more polarizing in our messaging, being more polarizing in our offer. Those were huge. And then I think just fundamentally running more like a business. You know, we have our Monday planning meeting every Monday. We have Thursday reflection meeting. We set monthly annual quarterly goals. You know, we. We have action plans. We've, you know, done our organizational chart and who's in term in charge of what rather. And, you know, I think outsourcing, too, that's been a really big one. We've outsourced a lot of things and you've talked a lot about this that aren't in our zone of genius and that we're depleting us and outsourcing that has freed up so much more energy to serve more effectively.
I love that outsourcing is where it's at. And in the beginning, this could simply just be a virtual assistant a few times a month. Ladies, this doesn't have to be anything crazy. So don't think that Melissa and I are saying to go hire someone full time because in the beginning that's not realistic, and you're probably not. And I didn't start building a large team till last year. So to give you an idea that you can build a huge brand without having all these people help you, it's definitely doable. But get help as soon as you can. Especially if you're a busy mom, especially if you have other things on your plate. That is huge.
Interns is another way, too, that we started, you know, offering people value or membership or experience right. For their resume by interning and even if we couldn't pay them yet, and then eventually growing more like you said to Vas. And that's so smart.
Yeah, that's so smart. That's where it's at. Interns. I love it. I love it. What else would you say to. I would love to know. My next question for you is the woman who is. To the woman who's on the fence, maybe, and she's an entrepreneur or she's entrepreneurial, she wants to start her side hustle, or she wants to go full time online. Or maybe she's already full time and wants to take it to the next level and she's thinking of coming to Pais 2 be brave. But she's nervous. Maybe she's nervous to go alone. She doesn't know if it's for her. What would you say to her?
I mean, without a doubt, do it. But if you're not scared, it's not going to be transformative, in my opinion. I think we have to get out of our comfort zones and we've got to be just a little bit nervous for change to really take place. And I believe that to be true of anything, you know, especially in our businesses. But I think going alone can be really powerful, too, in terms of having, you know, new conversations and really opening yourself up to be approachable and who knows?
Yeah, I agree. I agree. I think it's actually the most powerful thing that she can do is to go alone. For sure. I love it.
I mean, that letter that we wrote last year at the event to ourselves one year out, I got that in the mail month ago or so, and I was in tears reading the things that I was dreaming of that have come true since then. And to that woman who's scared, I also want you to know, I see you. I was you. I still am you at times. And I went out to that event, you know, new people from the Mastermind.
But I flew out.
I was really going by myself and I didn't know if it was possible. I just knew I had to see it through. And it's just. It's so worth trusting yourself and following that intuition and seeing what's possible for you.
That just gave me chills. That just gave me chills. If you gals are listening, last year I had the women write a letter to their Future selves. And it's something that I do at the event each year and I'm going to do it again this year. So for you gals listening who want to do this exercise, you'll be doing it this year at Paisley Brave 2019. I'm going to have you girls do a future letter to yourselves again because it is so powerful. Right. And it's insane because women are tagging me in these notes that they wrote and they're mind blown that it actually happened. And there is such power to writing down what you want and physically grabbing a pen and putting that goal on paper. There's such power to that.
Yeah, Energetically. It really does. It's where change happens.
Oh, my gosh. Yes. That's the only place change happens.
We've got interns and we've got manifestations going for us.
Yes.
What do you wish that you had known 10 years ago?
Oh, gosh, I wish I would have known that you don't have to be ready to start. And that's really my biggest message and what my book's going to be about. And my biggest message on this planet is start before you're ready. Successful people have started before they're ready. And I wish that my 19 year old self knew that because I think I put a lot of things off because I didn't think I was good enough or I was expert enough. And I wish someone would have just said, you're actually never going to feel like the expert, so you might as well get started.
I love that because do you ever truly feel like we are a completely accomplished expert in a field? Like there's just always more learning to be done.
Always. Yep, always. I love it. I love it. My last question for you is. Oh, gosh, I just want to hear any other quick words of advice or tips that you have for the woman who's building her online business and just feels really burnt out and stuck.
Yeah. Such a great question. And those feelings of frustration, I think I would say get a little mind steady, but make space for them. Let it be there. Don't just try and stuff it down. Because when we try and stuff it down and say, well, I'm not frustrated, this is great, that's going to pop up later, right. That shit's going to come back up and it's not going to be good, but make space for it. But then turn that into action. So let it come up. But then try and channel that into action and leaning into that spot, like, what's the most frustrating? What's the most draining. And what small step can you take today to start working towards that? And then how can those steps grow so that you're taking that energy?
Right.
And I love thinking of energy as something that we can. We can't create or destroy it, but we can transform it. So take that energy you have that's coming up and then turn it and channel it into something that's going to help you grow and meet your goals and ask for help, get support, you know, go to an event, go to, you know, Pays to be brave, Go join a mastermind, like whatever it might be, but take action to allow that energy to actually fuel your growth. Because if you let that frustration and exhaustion fuel your growth, it really will.
Ah, chills. That's so good. That's so good. Melissa, thank you so much for having me on. I loved this.
Yeah, thank you. This was great.
I love it. You guys are awesome. I hope to see you at Pays. Be brave. Melissa's amazing, so if you're listening to the show, you're in good hands, and.
I will be there. So I hope to see you guys there as well.
Thank you so much for hanging with me and Angie. Isn't her energy just contagious? She is somebody with an infectious laugh who loves to learn about people, who loves to get creative and to see what's possible. And I hope that inspired you to think about what's possible for you, too. In truth, by attending her event last year, Pays to be Brave. With a number of my mastermind quote unquote graduates, I was inspired to take action on starting this podcast. Now, I had wanted to do the podcast for a while. It had been an idea of mine. But I know I'm not alone when it comes to having ideas and maybe not taking action. And so it was getting out of my comfort zone. It was going to a live event with people who had accomplished things I wanted to accomplish, where new ideas were flowing, where new strategies were shared, where I really committed to myself. I'm going to do this. And so regardless of what it is.
First of all, come to peace to.
Be brave this year, if you can. It's in October. If you have questions, let me know. I think there's still a few tickets left.
I will be there.
I would love to see you. Mooch will be there.
She would love to see you.
But whether it's starting a podcast or starting your business or switching careers or maybe pursuing a new relationship, I hope that this episode allows you to feel more encouraged, more inspired, to tap into your own courage. Your own bravery, your own strength to pursue the life that you want to live and to trust that you can create the life that you want. And even when it's scary, and even when it's overwhelming, and even when everyone around you and even maybe sometimes things within you tell you it's not possible, that it is so very possible. And as Angie says, it pays to be brave. Thank you all for listening. Angie is someone who I believe Layden connected me with. It's where I needed to go to kind of sort out all the lessons Layden taught me and to make sense.
Of what I wanted to do with them.
And a really major product of that is this podcast. So thank you for allowing me to.
Share Layden's light, spread her messages to.
Hopefully inspire you to live a life that feels so whole, complete, fulfilling and exciting for you. Because I believe in my heart that you deserve to do that. If this episode resonated with you, I would love it if you could take a moment to rate review on itunes. That just allows us to spread the work that we're doing here and for me to shine Laban's light even further. As you know, nothing means more. We will chat soon.
