There are so many of us that feel like if we were just smarter or more disciplined, somehow our house would be more organized. Why do you think we tie clutter to our self-worth?
Well, first of all, we need to— let's break that apart completely. Okay. Clutter is not a character flaw. Okay. This is not something we have to hold on to. We are not the clutter that we see, right? We can fix that. We can do something about that. And again, all it is is an edit. Clutter is a very solvable problem.
I think the spaces that you decide to start first, we want to start with the simplest, least what we call like a landmine space. Okay. Because what happens, a closet is the perfect landmine space.
Closet is a landmine.
And one of the reasons that people, I think, don't even realize that they resist organizing is because they are afraid of what they might find in their brain of landmine issues. It's overwhelming. So there's guilt associated with all these decisions too. And so that I think comes into play a lot of times with people having this like aversion to organizing because they're afraid to confront these bigger existential issues going on in their minds.
And I think that that— Joanna's exactly right. I think that it— those are the real issues why people resist it. You spend a lot more time looking for things. You could spend very little time just being like, I actually don't like that. It's so much easier. Actually to just make decisions about things. And again, start extremely small. Start in a space, like Joanna said, without landmines. Yes, no landmines.
A junk drawer has very few. Start with the small wins and then you kind of get your muscle memory and you kind of build your confidence and then you're like, oh wait, you know what? I can actually do a cabinet too. You start getting the muscle and you're like, you feel the reward and the endorphins start kicking in and you're like, I can actually do this.
And then you're off to the races. Boom.
