Mel Robbins uses the caterpillar-to-butterfly transformation as a metaphor for personal breakdown. Inside the cocoon, a caterpillar liquefies into mush, but imaginal cells hold the blueprint for what comes next. When you feel like you're falling apart, you still have that inner guidance waiting to emerge.

When you're going through a very hard time, one thing that's very helpful for people to know is that the caterpillar, when it is about to become a butterfly, goes into a process of creating a cocoon. And in that cocoon, the caterpillar actually liquefies. I mean, it is— Like evaporates? Like literally like— Becomes liquid? Yeah, it just becomes mush, right? Okay. Inside of it. I have— I've never imagined that because I always thought that it just somehow grows wings out of its body. No, no, it goes in, it gets all mushy, but it has these imaginal cells in it that are— Imaginal cells? That's what they're called. They're actually called that. No way. Yes. Imaginal cells that carry the roadmap, the blueprint for becoming a butterfly. And as it molts inside of this cocoon, Those imaginal cells wake up and it becomes the butterfly. This story is helpful for people because there are times in every person's life where they feel like they have become complete mush and they have no idea what the heck is going on. Know that you are holding imaginal cells that know where you're supposed to be and what you're supposed to become in the future, and that they will emerge eventually. And some of it has to do with Letting go, letting yourself be in the place where you are, but the story overlay is different. It's not, I'm being completely demolished. It's, I'm in a state of transformation. And often that state is— it's just not a walk in the park.
