The 80/20 Rule Every Home Needs | Mel Robbins #shorts

Mel Robbins explains the 80/20 rule for home organization: keep your space at 80% capacity to leave 20% breathing room. The key is editing, not organizing. Keep only what you need, use, and love, which costs nothing and eliminates the overwhelm of shuffling things around.

Organizing should be manageable. It should be maintainable. Yes. Sustainable. It should not give you stress. It should take stress away. I don't care if you organize, you know, one cabinet of mugs. You know, it's something. We have a very important golden rule of organizing, and it's the 80/20 rule. Much like eating, you don't want to be more than 80% full because it doesn't feel good. So if you organize the way we're told to kind of treat our bodies, it's the same thing. 80% full, give yourself that 20% breathing room. If you keep your home to that level, that 20% gives you so much mental freedom and it gives you so much peace.
And the best thing, one of the things that we so love about organizing is it doesn't even have to be expensive. It can cause this massive shift in your entire life and cost $0. Literally, it's the edit. The edit is the magic. It's where the exhale happens, and it's 80% of the job of organizing.
So I've always used the word organizing, and from here on out, I'm going to use the word edit.
Yes. Yes.
We put it in our name for a reason. The Home Edit. The edit is the single most important thing you can do for your home and yourself, and it costs $0. I love this because you're right. Organizing, I'm just like moving stuff around.
Yeah, and it feels overwhelming, and it feels like you're cleaning and all this. No, editing, you're curating the things that you need, use, and love.
It is so unbelievably powerful to know, I don't care if it's just a junk drawer, it is so powerful to know that every single thing in there you decided to have in there on purpose, not just because it's a catch-all, and edit out the things that just don't belong, and all of a sudden your life is so much— You're just left with the things that you need, use, and love. You're organized. That's it. Boom.
