It's the 30th day of March, 2020. I'm only mentioning this because 30 years ago I was born. I guess we can treat this one sort of like a mini diary entry. Normally I'd be out celebrating, but we all know what's going on in the world right now. Coronavirus, quarantines, economic chaos. So instead, I'll do the one thing I enjoy the most. Driving. But this isn't just any drive. This is my first drive of the all new 2020 BMW X6 M50i. When I first saw the X6 many, many years ago, I was confused. What was the point? Why make an SUV so completely impractical? Was this some sort of joke for two generations? I loathed it. Until somehow, recently, I stumbled upon it again. You see, this isn't just any X6M50. This is my X6M50. And I hate to say it, but I canceled my C8 Corvette order for this car. Did I make the right choice? Probably not as a car enthusiast, but I think it was the right choice. As a father, I needed something that could do it all. Besides, it's not like I don't have any other sports cars in my garage. But it's not a slow car by any means. BMW's 4.4 liter Twin Turbo V8, codenamed the N63B44T3 makes an impressive 523 brake horsepower and a massive 553 pound feet of torque. Torque? It's the same engine out of the M850i and based on private dyno numbers, I've heard It's closer to 560 horsepower and probably 600 pounds of torque. Typical BMW for you. That would all be fun and dandy, but the problem is that this is technically a mid sized SUV and it weighs around 5200 pounds. To put that into perspective, my full size Toyota tundra with the 5.7 liter V8 weighs only 400 pounds more. And that weight really shows this is no nimble sports car. We drove the X3M and though it's only 600 pounds lighter, the difference was night and day. Then again, that's a full on M car and this is sort of a middle of the road thing. It's obvious that comfort and luxury are more important here. So this is kind of like a GT car then? And I'll treat it as such. But needs to have some balls, right? And it does, even in stock form. 0.63.8 seconds quarter mile in 12.3. That's nothing to sleep on, and if the aftermarket pulls through, you have a massive sleeper on your hands. The ZF8 speed transmission is rather impressive as well. It's very similar to the M850, perhaps a touch less responsive, but leagues above my Z06. Unfortunately, this car has the acoustic glass option, which means I can't hear that glorious V8. That's okay because half of it is piped into the cabin via speakers anyway, but it was one of the reasons why I chose this over the X4M. The Turbo V8 just sounds so much more dramatic than that 3 liter vacuum cleaner of an engine that they put in the X4. Performance and emotion aside, I'm still blown away by the technology and luxury available in this thing. What took me a whole episode just to cover it all. It's not the most beautiful cabin, but level three autonomy, augmented reality, smartphone control, massaging seats. For just shy of 100 grand, it's a very complete package. Couple that with the ability to keep up with most sports cars in a straight line and you've got a pretty great all around cool dad suv. Either way, I'll talk more about it in a future in depth review. I was just really excited to share this little birthday gift that I got for my wife and myself because we're about two weeks apart and we celebrate at the same time. Anyways, I'll let you guys go, but not before I do a quick 0:60 pull. I hope you guys enjoyed this video. If you did, let me know by leaving a thumbs up and comment below. Stay tuned because in a few weeks I'll have a full review and acceleration test for the X6 M50. Also, don't forget to take a look at our merch store and support the channel.
