So Germany has some pretty interesting options when it comes to sporty SUVs, but then again, they've sort of cornered that entire market because if you think about it, there aren't too many other choices when it comes to a fast family orientated grocery getter besides maybe the Trackhawk TRX lineup from the Chrysler Group. So today I want to take a look at two popular brands and throw them against each other in a standing half mile drag race to see who's faster. Let's get started.
First up is the BMW X5M. Unfortunately, it's not the range topping competition model because we wanted to make the playing field somewhat fair. But with this 4.4 liter twin turbo V8, it still makes a monstrous 600 brake horsepower. It's really not that heavy either, at least not for a modern midsize SUV. At just under £5,100, it's on the lighter side of things, I gotta say. Certainly a very mundane looking car, especially in white. If you didn't know any better, you could probably mistake it for a plain old X5. The same could be said for the interior, with the exception of some nice touches like the seats and M specific pieces. But how does it sound? On the other side of the ring is the first ever 2021 Porsche Cayenne Turbo coupe. Despite significantly decreasing practicality, the sloped roof does incorporate some interesting active aero elements as well as adding a four grand premium over the standard SUV. Powered by a four liter Twin Turbo V8, it makes 541 horses. So it's a little outgunned here. But I am a sucker for this Porsche interior. It's definitely a more stylish car and is slightly lighter than the X5M. But I wish they did more to make it feel different than the base Cayenne. At least on the outside anyway. Let's listen to a purr. If this was a singing contest, the Porsche would have won outright. But we're going to need to send them down our half mile Runway for two rolls and a dig to see who comes out on top. The performance department. We'll start with some 30 roll. It's Sam.
I can't let these guys have all the fun. So we're going to throw our lovely X6 M50 here into the mix for a little bonus round. Coming in at 523 brake horsepower and weighing 5160 pounds, the power to weight is a modest 9.9 to 1. That makes us severely underpowered. But the key takeaway here is that it also costs 20 grand less than the X5 and almost 50 grand cheaper than the Porsche. So let's get back out there to see if this Baby M can keep up with the heavy hitters.

Not too shabby, huh? None of us were actually expecting the X6 to beat the Cayenne, myself included. I guess that's just a testament to this modern era of BMWs. But I get it. Drag racing probably isn't high up on a list for a prospective owner of any of these cars. Or maybe it is, I don't know. So performance aside, the interior situation between the X6M50 and the X5M isn't too crazy different. But I do think the cabin the Porsche is significantly more luxurious and upscale design wise. Even though the X5M has the best overall performance, I like the way the Cayenne coupe and the X6 look much better. But that's only because, you know I'm biased towards coupe SUVs. Might even be leaning towards the Cayenne because feels kind of more muscular and beefy. Sort of like if an Aston Martin and Urus had a stepchild. But hey, is it worth almost 150 grand? I'll let you decide that, so don't forget to leave me a comment below and let me know which one you'd pick.
