454HP BMW M4 CS Acceleration Review | Not for the Faint of Heart

Michael Chuang tests a 2019 BMW M4 CS and finds it handles brilliantly but throttle response is twitchy and the $100k price feels steep. It hits 0-60 in 4.74 seconds and runs a quarter-mile in 12.4 seconds, though the exhaust note disappoints.

Sam. So the 2019 BMW M4Cs. A lot of money for not a lot of car. Because let's be real, 100 grand can get you some pretty nice things. Even if it is limited to 1000 cars in the US it's still just an M4. But let's get to know her a little better. I think the M4Cs is a good looking car, albeit a little generic and under the radar, especially in Alpine white. But from a handling aspect, it's pretty fun. The steering gives you lovely feedback. The suspension is stiff in Sport plus, but corners oh so flat. My only complaint would be throttle response. It's over responsive and that's twitchy in a bad way. It requires a little bit more finesse through turns. Turbo lag is there, a little less than the Quadrifoglio, but almost equally as dramatic. The seven speed DCT is starting to show its age here, but it's still really quick. I can't get over how cool this hood looks from above though. But if you're insane and you want to buy this car to be practical, rest assured that the back seats are probably the biggest in its class. Anyway, let's go and do what we're really here for. We'll try that one more time with launch control. I know most people will probably say that this car is meant for corners, and that's true. Not a day goes by that I don't look for a track sponsorship or a huge parking lot without light posts to do handling tests. But straight line stuff is the only thing we can really consistently log for now. So let's see those results. Keep in mind that these are real world numbers. We don't use a one foot rollout on any metric except a quarter and a half mile. They're da corrected. No burnout, no track prep, real pavement, real conditions. And launch control only if it's convenient. Let's start with the stuff we care about. 4160, 130. Interesting to see that it's right around the same as an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. It would make for a pretty cool race. The half mile is where the big hits play though. Keep in mind that the trap speed is what matters here. And it looks like the M4Cs might have a little bit more top end than its Italian rival. A little off topic, but the brakes are carbon ceramic and they bite great. Significantly better than the Alfa, but for this price they should have come standard. Instead it'll cost you eight grand more. The exhaust is mediocre. All those burbles out back help, but it's not as amazing as a Quadrifoglio C63AMG or even the Maserati V6. Overall it's still fun to drive. Zero60 happened in 4.74, almost the second off from manufacturer magazine claims, but refer to the Disclaimer 0 109.35 a little fast than the Giulia here, probably because of the semi useful launch control which the Alpha didn't have any of. Quarter mile came in at 12.4 at just under 118. Not terrible, but rear wheel drive and 55 degree weather aren't your friends here. Last but not least for my metric friends we have the 100-200 km per hour. 9.14. Not terrible. The M4CS is a fun car, quick enough for most people and it's a handful when you push it, but not worth $100,000.
