How FAST is the Original 2020 Toyota Supra in Stock Form? | 1/2 Mile and 60-130 Acceleration Review

Michael Chuang tests a stock 2020 Toyota Supra's acceleration: 0-60 takes 5.53 seconds, but it hits 60-130 in 14.1 seconds and runs a quarter mile in 13.29 seconds at 110.55 mph. The 335-horsepower BMW-derived inline-six feels competitive in real-world driving despite a sluggish launch.

Sam, It's. So this is the 2020 Toyota Supra. It's not the first time we've had it on this channel, but funny enough, it's the first time we've had it in stock form. And what that really means is that it only makes 335 brake horsepower and 365 foot pounds of torque. But we all know that's a lie, because at the heart of this car is the newly updated BMW B50. But it's not the same B58 in the M340i. More of a stepping stone. One that's unique to the 2020 model year. Supra. It's still a turbocharged 3 liter inline six. And I'm sure it's still just as capable of making big power if you push it with the aftermarket. If history's taught us anything, it's that any car with a BMW engine probably makes more power than they claim. My guess is that this thing probably makes close to the 382 horsepower that's rated in the M340i. And you know, I drove that car a little while back and I was thoroughly impressed by it. So let's see what this lighter and sportier cousin can do in our half mile acceleration test. But before we do the test, I wanted to talk about this cool little gadget called the Nona Zeus. It's Basically a tiny OBD2 module that you plug into your car and you connect to your phone via Bluetooth. You can check the health of your car, detect codes, clear codes, and it'll show you how to self repair issues. Because instead of just saying it's a P010 whatever intake manifold error code, it'll give you a more in depth explanation on what the problem is and common solutions. If nothing else, it'll save you a trip to the dealer who can sometimes charge up to 150 bucks just for scanning a code. Plus, if you're a track guy, you already know how valuable an OBD2 reader is. But it's much more than that. You can customize the dashboard for data logging. It'll tell you whether you speed too much, it can GPS locate your car if you lose it, and it can set reminders for parking when you park on the street to avoid getting tickets. On top of that, if you drive for work, it'll log your mileage automatically on your trips so you can save money on your taxes later on. This all sounds fine and dandy, but it also sounds kind of expensive. Well, you'd Be surprised because it costs only 30 bucks online and right now for a limited time it's free if you go on the Nando website. So go check it out. Now, let's get on with the show. It always looks quick on the flyby, but let's take a look at our V box to see what kind of times it pops. Put down. I'll warn you now, the rolling times made sense, but the standing stuff was way off. We'll start with the 4100 where the supra nailed it in 8 seconds flat. Somewhat checks out because it's only half a second slower here than the M340i but faster than pretty much everything else in this power range. Let's take a look at the 60 130, which is the gold standard of real world acceleration. It was able to eke out a 14.1 second time, still behind the M340i by a little bit more than a half a second. But it's beating pretty much every other car in the sub 400 horsepower range. When you push things out to a half mile, things get more impressive. The Supra crossed the line at a hair under 135mph and I'm sure with a few more tries we can probably break the 135 mark. Either way, this car has some decent top end. Keep in mind, trap speed is the important part of this metric. Now for the bad news. I don't know what happened, but the 060 was atrocious. 5.53 seconds here. Of course, no one foot rollout, but that only accounts for two or three tenths of a second. Not sure if it was the poor pavement or what, but let's move to the 0 100. Same deal here. No one foot rollout, but disappointing because it's a second and a half slower than what it should be. Seems like the launch is the big limiting factor and in my experience, BMW launch control is always finicky on real pavement unless you have an all wheel drive car. The quarter mile came in at 13.29, at 110.55. Definitely not superstar numbers in this arena, but I'm confident that it's mainly due to the poor launch control and the less than perfect pavement. Could have probably gotten it down with a few more runs, but we only had two or three tries. I would take the last three metrics with a grain of salt, but that's why this channel is more about rolling times and the half mile instead. If you want to see more in depth numbers Check out the fast list in the description below. I'm not gonna lie still. Sometime between when I first saw the A90 super online and right about now, the design has really grown a lot on me, even in white. And I'm sure by now that half the people who watch this channel know that Dan Wang is not a fan of white cars. Anyway, the way I feel about the Supra is that, you know, it's less of a straight line car, but more of a track cable monster in disguise. Every time I get into one of these things and take a corner, I am simply impressed. While everyone else is talk about how to make big power or, you know, go full bolt on a B58, I think this car really shines around a racetrack. I mean, sure, more power is always nice, but let's face it, any car that weighs under 3,400 pounds is nowadays considered lightweight. Which is really kind of sad that cars have become this way now. But I don't know, that's a conversation for another time. Bottom line is that it handles really well. I know that this car, MSRP is for almost $60,000, and that's a crazy for a Toyota, but we all know that it's secretly a BMW. So if you can look past that or you can walk out the door with this car at $50,000, telling you that's a pretty banging deal because I think it looks attractive. I like the interior, I like the seats, and at that price point, it's really quick. It looks way better than that Nissan 400Z Proto thing that they brought out. And that's coming from a guy who likes Nissans and Infinitis, although I kind of shot on the Q60 RS a little while back. Anyway, I'm excited about the 2021 Supra because they made some changes and they're going to be using the newest version of the B58, which means it's going to have the same engine that's in the M340i that makes 382 horsepower. So imagine that in a car that's 600 pounds lighter, even in stock form. I think it's going to be a handful. Well, that's all for today and I'll catch you guys in the next one. God, that Exige looks good. But I actually think I might be just as quick in a straight line as a Supra. But I know one thing for sure is that I'll demolish the Supra around a corner. But hey, wouldn't a Supra look pretty good next to that thing. Maybe in turbulence, Gray.
