Lexus GS-F vs. Maserati Ghibli S Q4 | A Race Between Mid Size Performance Sedans

Lexus GS F takes on Maserati Ghibli S Q4 in acceleration tests. The Lexus wins on 0-60 and quarter-mile times and costs less, making it the better value despite the Maserati's Italian appeal.

Today we're doing a very interesting head to head. One of my favorite cars versus one of my least favorite cars, the Lexus GS FS, the Maserati Ghibli SQ4. At first glance you might think that the Maserati is at a disadvantage, or maybe that the Lexus GS F is outclassed. And this may not be the most conventional matchup, but let me break it down for you. In the right corner you have the Lexus GS F, a naturally aspirated 5 liter V8 making a burly 467 horsepower, 389 foot pounds of torque matted to an 8 speed automatic, sending all the power to the rear wheels. It weighs 4,034 pounds, which is considered pretty light for a mid sized performance sedan. These days they claim a 0:60 time of 4 1/2 seconds, a top speed of 168 miles per hour and a quarter mile time of of 12.9 seconds at almost 111 miles per hour. Our 40 to 100 test pegged it at 7.44 seconds, which puts it in some modestly quick company. On the left side of the ring I got the Maserati Ghibli SQ4, which may seem like the underdog in this situation. It's got the disadvantage of the all wheel drive system, a twin turbo 3 liter V6 making 43 less horsepower, but almost 40 pounds more torque. It's got the mid range punch because of its boost, but the all wheel drive system makes it weigh about 100 pounds more than the Lexus. The 0:60 time is a little slower at 4.7 seconds, but the top speed is 178 miles per hour and the quarter mile was pegged at 12.8 seconds at around 109 with a 40 to 100 time of 8.3 seconds. So this could be a close one. Both of these cars cost practically the same, depending on how you option the Maserati. So I'm curious to see which one would do better in a 40 roll. Let's find out. But first let's see which one sounds better. Even though I hate this car, I hate losing even more. But with the better torque curve and the faster shifting transmission, I'm hoping that I could pull ahead. Let's do this. But deep down inside I want the GSF to win. It's. It.
Well, I wasn't expecting that, but low key. I kind of was good for Lexus for making a faster car and that's way more reliable than this Maserati.
And not to mention the interior in.
This GSF is way better than the Maz, but even then the results weren't surprising at all. It's a perfect example of why quarter mile and 0 to 60 times don't tell the whole story.
I guess that's what a three second.
Difference looks like in a 60130 run because the GSF pulled off a 6130 of 12.87 seconds while the Ghibli did it in 15.41. And if you don't know already, that's pretty damn slow. Straight line performance aside, the GSF is still a way better value. I believe Maserati should either give us a Trofeo version or just discontinue the damn thing, because in a world of GSFs, why do you need a Ghibli? Special thanks to Arsan and his brother for coming out with his Matador red GSF and sticking it out in the cold with us. Wouldn't have been possible without you guys.
