Pushing the S58 to the Next Level | Tuned BMW X3 M Competition vs. 2020 Mercedes AMG GT-R

Michael Chuang drag races a tuned BMW X3 M Competition against a 2020 Mercedes AMG GT-R. The X3M, running a stage-two tune with an estimated 640 hp to the wheels, beats the Mercedes in the 40-100 kph sprint (5.01s vs 5.19s) but falls behind in the longer quarter-mile run (8.31s vs 7.85s).

Sam, A couple months ago we did this thing where we showed you how fast the new Porsche 992 Carrera S was. And then we showed you what a big fat BMW X3M with the stage one tune would do to it in the half mile drag race. And as impressive as that was, today I've got a much more dramatic display of force for you. We're going to take a real supercar and see how the new BMW S58 platform fares against that. So let's take a look at what we got. First up is the 2020 Mercedes AMG GTR. Pretty much undefeated since its debut on the channel. It's been beating down everything we've thrown at it so far. And it's a pretty good looking car too. Reminiscent of a viper that put on a tailored suit. This thing is really meant for destroying lap records more than being a straight line beast. But it can still do that because it's got some muscle to it. We're looking at a 4 liter twin turbo V8 that makes 577 brake horsepower and weighs just under 3600 pounds. That puts the power weight at 6.23. With a 7 speed DCT and very effective launch control, it makes use of all that power it. In our acceleration tests we pegged it as a high 7 second 6, 130 car. The BMW X3M competition is already a formidable machine, especially for an SUV. But it sports something that's soon to become a tuning legend and that's the new S58 powerplant. In stock form it's a 3 liter twin turbo inline six. That makes an impressive 503 horsepower and 442 pounds of torque. We already know this car is in stock though. It isn't even on that stage one tune that raced the Porsche. Now it's back with a stage two tune E30 and downpipes. Which means it's estimated to make around 640 to all four wheels or 700 to the crank. And even though it weighs over 1,000 pounds more than the AMG, it's still got a solid power weight of 6.6 to 1. Let's get this party started. Sa. It's sam. Now it's time to do it from a dig. Okay, let's try that again. And again. Alright, one more time. Well, looks like the GTR is the winner. Gonna be honest with you, I knew that the X3M was fast, which is why I put it up against one of the quickest stock cars under 200 grand that I had, but I wasn't expecting that. Now. The AMG GTR only really won by technicality because if the BMW didn't have trouble getting into launch control, then it would have 100% taken that race from a dig. Anywho, out of curiosity, let's take a look at those V box numbers from the runs. In the 40 100. The AMG GTR put down a 5.19 in the first run and a 5.09 in the second. The X3M did 5.01 and 5.02 respectively. Things change up a little in the 6130 where the Mercedes did 7.85 and 7.94 and the BMW slipped behind at 8.31 and 8.35. Still pretty close. Frankly, it could have gone either way depending on the reaction time of the drivers. The AMG GTR is the faster car on paper though, but the X3M definitely had an advantage from a lower roll because of the all wheel drive system. However, there's a good chance that if we went from something like a 50 or 60 roll, the AMG GT R probably would have just slowly crawled away. The key takeaway from this conversation is that the S58 engine is just seriously impressive. Stage two a little bit of ethanol, that's all you really need to take on supercars. And that's in an SUV. Imagine what it would be like in an M3 or an M4 that's 600 pounds lighter, but yeah. What do you guys think about the S58 engine? Pretty gnarly, huh? I mean, BMWs, they never cease to amaze me in terms of performance value. Well, that's it for this episode, and as always, I'll catch you guys on the next one. What in the world's in that car?
