Revolutionize Your Brand: Crafting Impactful 'Because Statements' | Mick Unplugged #Because

Mick Hunt argues mission statements don't work and proposes replacing them with "because statements" that are shorter and emotionally driven. He walks through a four-step process: identify your driving force, define your impactful action, communicate with conviction, and uncover your core values. A because statement becomes the promise that connects strategy to execution and motivates both teams and customers.

Hi, I'm Mick and I'm here to let you in on a secret. Today, your mission and vision statements suck. Welcome back to Nick Unplugged, where today we're not just talking about branding, we're revolutionizing it with the power of because statements. Let's deep dive into why mission statements fail to resonate and how we can transform them into something genuinely much more impactful. Before we get started, make sure that you, like, subscribe and hit the bell for notifications. Have you ever stopped to think about your company's mission statement? Chances are most of your team and actually 100% of your customers don't even know them. Why? Because traditional mission statements often miss the mark in connecting deeply with the people they're meant to inspire. You want to hear some examples of weak mission statements? These are actually real ones. We strive to be the leading provider of world class products. Say that again. We strive to be the leading provider of world class products. Genuine mission statement. But this statement is vague and it's pretty generic. When I searched that, I saw over 500 companies that had something very similar as their mission statement. It lacks emotion and it fails to tell us why this really matters. Here's another one. Our mission is to deliver superior returns to our stakeholders. Again, over 500 businesses have something very similar as their mission statement. While it's an honest goal, it doesn't inspire your team, it doesn't resonate with your customers. It's purely profit driven with no deeper purpose. So let's reimagine these statements and turn them into compelling because statements that truly captivate and resonate. So let's take that first one. We strive to be a leading provider of world class products. Let's turn this into a becausting. Because innovation is our heartbeat, we revolutionize everyday experiences with products that redefine quality and sustainability. You see the difference? This statement brings a dynamic punch, emphasizing innovation as the core driver and highlighting the transformative impact of the products. Let's take the second statement. Our mission is to deliver superior returns to our shareholders. Let's turn this into a because statement. Because empowering prosperity is our crusade. We create pathways for shareholders and community wealth, forging a future where everyone thrives. This version elevates the original intent, connecting financial success with the broader mission of communal prosperity and inclusive growth. There's a huge difference in a mission statement and a because statement. Your because statement, not only does your team feel it, but also to your customers. And now that we've crafted these because statements, let's talk about how you can create your own because statement should be the lens through which every aspect of your business is viewed, from strategy to execution. So here are four pivotal steps to guide you. Number one, Pinpoint your driving force. What is the heartbeat of your company? This is where your because statement begins. It's the core passion or principle that fuels everything that you do. Number two, Define your impactful action. How does your driving force translate into action? This part of your statement should reflect the company's powerful impact that you want to achieve in the world. Number three, Communicate with conviction. Your because statement should be a bold declaration, a commitment you're making to your team, your customers and to the world. It must resonate with conviction and clarity. And number four, the most important thing you have to do is delve into your core values. What principles drive your company? Reflect deeply and articulate these values. They're the foundation of your because statement. Crafting your because is about capturing the essence of your brand's soul and its promise to the world. It's a journey of introspection and creativity that results in a statement as unique as your brand itself. Remember, a powerful because statement is more than a catchy phrase. It's a beacon that guides every aspect of your business from decision making to customer relationship. It's about connecting, not just communicating. So, as we conclude, let this thought guide you. Your because is not just your purpose. It's your promise to the world. Craft it with care and live it with passion. Stay purpose driven. And as always, hold on to this. Your because is your superpower. Unleash it. Stay inspired. See you next time when we come.
