Mike Austin describes challenges in dissecting cloud usage data and optimizing costs. He likens current Azure adoption to early VMware sprawl—organizations lifted workloads into the cloud using oversized VM configurations without right-sizing, producing unexpected high costs and driving later consolidation efforts.

You. It's very difficult and confusing to dissect the data to figure out what's going on. We know we need to optimize. I sort of almost relate the journey from azure to the VMware journey in the early 2000s, where VMware came out as a technology, everybody started to deploy VMware. You had VMware sprawl, and then about eight, nine, 10 years later, everybody's like, why do we have so many VMs? It's costing us a fortune. And they did some consolidation. Same sort of thing is going to happen or is happening depending on where you are. In the adoption of Azure, we just moved workloads into the cloud. We didn't really think about it. We just said, hey, we've got eight CPUs assigned to this, this much RAM, this much storage. You went and looked for the Azure instance type that sort of matched up to that, the best, and deployed to.
