Mike Austin describes a FinOps case study: while monitoring a client’s Azure spend they detected a sudden step spike that would have cost the client "six plus figures" per month. Investigation showed an engineer had enabled very expensive storage by mistake during provisioning. Because they caught it quickly, they fixed it after about 48 hours of incurred cost instead of letting the elevated spend continue for weeks or months.

If we see something, you know, we can react to it, you know, quickly. Right. Like, we had one client that, because we're monitoring their Azure spend with them, had a spike in a day. And we, we went and saw it. It was a significant step spike. It was going to cost them six plus figures a month and increased cost on Azure. We started asking the questions, and it turned out that an engineer in this case had turned on some very expensive storage that they shouldn't have. They didn't know what they were doing when they prov it. And we were able to fix that so that they only had about 48 hours of cost at that, versus a month goes by, and then two months, three months, four months, and they aren't able to dive into that.
