Mike Austin explains operational challenges with cloud storage: providers charge for provisioned capacity rather than actual usage, and fixing storage often requires downtime (taking servers offline). These constraints limit the ability to scale storage elastically and make high-availability targets (e.g., five or six nines) harder to maintain within limited maintenance windows.

And the thing with the cloud is you pay based on the amount of storage that you provisioned, not for what you have in use. And to make things more challenging, you have to have downtime in order to fix storage. So I can't. I got to take my, my servers down. I got to take them offline. And so if we think about, you know, providing five nines or six nines of service to our, to our customers, whether those be internal, internal customers, or external custom, the option of scaling up and scaling down your storage is not really there because you only have very limited maintenance windows that you're going to take those servers offline.
