Mike Austin explains SQL Server's CAL licensing model, where you buy a license for the server plus a CAL for each device or user that accesses it. It's less common now than core-based licensing, but some customers still use it in certain scenarios.

The server CAL model, from a licensing perspective for SQL Server is something that's not seen very often anymore. Most people are licensing this on a core basis, although there are still some customers that do server cal, and there are some scenarios where maybe you do a subset of server cal. And so the way that a server CAL licensing model works is you buy a SQL Server for the ose, right? So whether it's a physical or virtual, you buy a SQL Server license for the osc, and then you buy client access licenses, either for every device or every user that actually accesses the server.
