Mike Austin introduces a mental model for cloud cost optimization: align three things—what you pay for, what you deployed, and what you need—and aim for their intersection as the 'utopia' of resource and cost optimization. He emphasizes understanding root causes and areas to investigate before applying specific cost-saving tactics.

How do we do cost optimization? Understand things. And I always believe that understanding kind of the root cause or at least understanding where the areas that you can be looking for is important to start on that journey. Right? So before we even get into anything else, let's talk about what ends up happening in the cloud, right? So I kind of like to look at it like this. You have what you're paying for, you're having what you. You have what you deployed and you have what you need. And what you're really trying to get to is that intersection, the three. If I can get to that, that is the utopia where my resources and my cost are optimized. Now, cost may not quite be optimized there. And the reason for that is if, you know, if you're just paying as pay as you go and you haven't negotiated a deal, maybe you get a little bit better unit economics. But for the most part, you're trying to get into this sweet spot here, right?
