Mike Austin breaks down why inventory coverage alone isn't enough for software license compliance. You need hundreds of vendor-specific attributes like processor counts and VMware guest-to-host relationships to calculate actual license entitlements, even when you've captured 90-95% of your software.

Data quality goes beyond just the do I have an inventoried, okay, data quality? When you get into true data quality for this stuff, next goes to the next part, which is do I have all the data points to make a license position? So not only do I have 90 to 95% inventory coverage, do I have the attributes needed for licensing calculations? And there are hundreds of these, by the way. Hundreds. And like I said before, they're not always the same, even within the same vendor. And so what do I mean by attributes? Right? So these are going to be things like do I have processors, do I have core accounts, do I have guest to host relationships in VMware? Do I understand whether, you know, VMotion is happening, what's going on in the cloud? You know, think of all those sorts of things that go into architecture that potentially have a play on inventory or on licensing.
