Mike Austin explains the difference between User CALs and Device CALs for Microsoft licensing. User CALs let one person access from any device; Device CALs let multiple people use one licensed machine. Knowledge workers typically need User CALs, while shop floors and hospital kiosks use Device CALs.

And so they have two different client access license types. There's user CALS and device cals users go to the users device go to the go to a device so that if I have a user cal, Mike Austin can access from my laptop, from my phone, from, I don't know, another PC in the office, I can come in and access from any number of devices. Device licensing means that device is licensed to connect to the server. So in that case I could have multiple users go up to that device and connect. Right. So typical scenario here is knowledge workers usually usually have user based CALS. But if I'm a manufacturer with shop floor PCs or hospital with, you know, kiosks or PCs at nursing stations where you got four shifts or four people that go through and there's two PCs, they'd buy device because they could buy one device CAL and all 14 or 20 people could actually use that device.
