Mike Austin (speaker) discusses reading legal contracts from a software asset management and compliance perspective. He emphasizes focusing on the business terms (licensing, verification/audit rights) over purely legal wording, and notes clauses like IP acceptance and content/data protection as legal items to be understood but not necessarily prescriptive for licensing.

There is a legal contract, which this is and then there's the business aspect of the contract. Okay. And so what I mean by that is when I'm going to read this from a software asset management and compliance perspective, I'm going to look for the business terms. The legal terms are important, don't get me wrong, but I'm going to look for the business terms in here. IPA acceptance, right? What is this? Content and data protection. Okay, that's important and legal is going to care about that. But from a licensing and compliance perspective, I probably just want to read this to make sure I understand it. But again it's not telling me how to license anything. Right. It's just telling. This is all legal stuff. Now there's a section here in verification. I'm going to pay close attention to that because ah, here's the license verification. So if we're getting audited, I want to understand what this says. This is their rights to audit us.
