Mike Austin explains software "license metrics": the various ways vendors count required licenses and price them. He lists common metrics (device-based, user-based, processor/core-based, server CALs, revenue-linked, IBM PVUs), notes there are hundreds of variants, and that products may be sold under multiple metrics/programs and terms.

And so license metrics are typically the way or the license metrics are the way that you count the number of licenses that you require. You require. And then that license metric would have a price associated with them. So, you know, there's hundreds and hundreds of these, right? I put a few of the most common. Like you have device based. So, you know, if I install it on a desktop, I have to buy a license for the desktop. There's user based. There's processor core based. Microsoft's famous for their server Calmod. We've seen contracts that are based on the revenue that you associate with. IBM loves these things called processor value units. And it goes on and on and on. Right. The reality is, like I said, there's hundreds of these and certain products you can buy in multiple different license metrics and through different license programs and terms.
