Yeah, I know it's good. And your center screen, it looks perfect. Thank you. And Jacob Bloom. Yeah.

What's up?

Welcome to our show. Today we're gonna talk about the entrepreneurial family. You know, they say it's. Some people think it's a myth, like it's not doable that, that you are an entrepreneur and your family's your family. But they're two separate things. Well, Ryan Langford has a different, a different vantage point on this and he's going to share his experience before we in interview. Ryan, I want to thank nextiva. They are a voiceover p voice over IP phone system provider and a supporter of the show for the entirety of the show. So Nextiva, just thank you for supporting us for 306 episodes. You are a stalwart. His name is Ryan Langford and his wife Stephanie are self described serial entrepreneurs who have built and sold multiple businesses. In fact, they just exited from a business recently. And Ryan loves pretending to be, pretending to be a mogul, playing guitar for the musically illiterate and jumping off a tall mountain with his children who all over the world. So I think understand what that's all about. But with no further ado, Ryan, welcome to our show.

Welcome, Ryan. Hey guys, thanks for having me.

So you have the entrepreneurial family and you're teaching your children to jump off tall mountains. That sounds risky. What's going on?

Yeah, well, I mean in terms of jumping off of mountains, my older two kids and I are all certified paragliding pilots. So as we travel around the world, we've been to roughly about 80 countries in the last five, six years with the kids and we look for wherever we can, finding good mountains to jump off with our paragliders and fly around.

Wow. So you travel with your family for now, for, was it five or six years you just said? Okay, since 2013. And you're running a business while doing this. It doesn't connect because what I'm, I believe as you travel over the world, you're in different time zones, you're with your children and wife experiencing all these fascinating things. How can you run a business while experiencing life like that?

Yeah, well, it's interesting. It introduces a new level of challenges. There's a whole bunch of challenges that you don't experience when you're at home. Like, consistent. I mean, it's a lot better now than it was seven years ago, but used to be really consistently poor. Internet, you know, I have five kids, soon to be six, and we started traveling when we had four, soon to be five, and, you know, kids making noise and like, how to overcome that. But it actually, we started traveling for a business reason, and that was that I knew that I needed to separate myself from my business and learn how to not be like the bottleneck for everything.

Interesting.

So it really caused us to learn to hire good people, put in good systems, you know, really move up to designing a business as you talk about clockwork.

So, okay, so you started traveling in 2013. When did you start your first business?

I started my first business in 2008.

Okay, so you're running a business for, you know, five years or so in the, in the traditional sense, you know, commuting from home and so forth?

Yeah, yeah. I ran a music school. A music school that taught in students homes all around the Vancouver. I'm from originally from Vancouver, Canada. All around the Vancouver area.

Okay, so you're running this music school you're doing for five years. And did you have this wake up moment saying, this is not working? What got you on the road?

You know, Mike, I was working. Like, I know people say, you know, I was working 70 hours a week or 80 hours a week. I mean, I was working that plus some because I tracked it, because I thought, this is ridiculous. I'm always working, okay? And I was working even at least once, if not a couple of times a month. I would work. I would start at like 6 or 7 in the morning. I'd work all the way through the night and then finish. I would collapse the next evening. So like 35, 40 hours straight. Because, you know, I always said I have more time than money. So I was willing to sacrifice my. My health for the success of the business. And I eventually just couldn't handle it anymore. It's like, I can't live my life like this. I'm. I'm at home with my kids, but I never see them.

Yeah.

And so I knew that there I had to change. And I knew that I was the reason that I was in that situation. It wasn't because the business was flawed. It wasn't because of market conditions. It was because I needed to grow as an entrepreneur. And so that's why we Decided to start traveling. That was sort of the impetus, was like, we're going to try this thing where I remove myself as the bottleneck and stop putting my fingers in everybody's job and driving all my people crazy. And so. But that was the thing that prompted me to go, because I thought the only way that I'm going to be able to stop meddling in every little aspect of the business is by removing myself from the equation. So I thought I'd go as far away as I could to Argentina.

Did Stephanie have something to do with this? Did she have a come to Jesus with you and say, ryan, this isn't working? Or is it just, oh, we have a few.

We have a few. Come to Jesus? Yeah. She was definitely in agreement. It took a couple of years for me to convince her, actually, because there was a. I mean, there was just like. I mean, I've been doing it for five years. I didn't know how to be an entrepreneur. I just knew I wanted to be.

Yeah.

And. But, yeah, we had lots of moments where we're like, this isn't working. We got to do something different.

But. But you must. Or did you have that feeling if I go to Argentina, the business could collapse. This could be the end of our income.

Absolutely. We actually had that. We had. We had started and sold another business prior to that, just a small one. We sold it for $20,000 because we were. We're burnt out. But we did, like, a few months, and then we had another business that we were running together. So between those two, you know, we employed that idea, like, what's the worst thing that could happen?

Yeah.

And I was. I mean, I felt like I was physically dying and all sorts of health challenges because of how much I was working in the stress that I was. I was bearing. I just had cancer and was recovering for that in the process. And we're like, what's the worst thing that could happen? We could. We could run out of money. We could lose our businesses. We could have no home. We're like, we've been there before. It's not that bad.

Yeah.

So how do you go for it? Did you sell the house? Did you keep your house and just go, could you afford to do that? How did that work?

Yeah, at the time, we were just renting, and so we didn't really. We actually subletted the house so we could keep our office, because our office was the garage, which we had converted into an office with technically, without permission.

Nice.

But we converted it into. So we subletted the House to some people. We stored a bunch of our stuff, taking up half the office, and then we had some savings. We had, like, kind of a big business project success right before we left, which funded us for. Funded us for a bit. But we were really just kind of going on faith. And I had spent probably three, six months prior to that focusing on documenting my systems using, like, both written videos, hiring really good people, and, like, learning to step out of the way and trust them. But it was a big. It was a big risk. I remember a week in, two weeks in, I called my team and was like, okay, lay it on me. Like, what? What's. Like, I expected all the money's gone. All of our students were leaving. Right. And I was super panicked. I was super stressed. And they said, oh, no, it's good. We actually grew the business 10% since you've been gone. Oh, maybe I was the problem.

Yeah. Right. Okay, so what if you were the problem? I mean, that must be a punch to the ego.

Oh, yeah, Yeah. I was really, really depressed. Even though the business was doing well, I thought, like, I think I actually am the problem in my business, and it was definitely a hard thing overcome. But also, I was grateful that the business wasn't falling apart, and I learned a lot from that.

Yeah, it must have been a massive identity shift. What about your kids? I mean, they're growing up in the traditional, you know, dad's at work or mom's at work and someone's home when they come from school, and now all of a sudden you're going to Argentina. What kind of shift was like for your children?

Yeah, you know what it wasn't? Well, the traveling was certainly a shift, Although we've always homeschooled our kids. I was homeschooled since grade two. So to me, that's normal. Even though it's not normal. To me, it is right now.

Now it's the new normal with COVID That's right.

Yeah, no kidding. And so that wasn't much of a transition. We still continued to homeschool the kids. They've always been super involved in all of our businesses. We share numbers with them. We don't dumb down things. So we just talked about our business with them on the road and how, you know, our travel was impacting and our hopes and dreams. So it wasn't as big of a shift as you would have expected. And they were a young family, too, so as long as they had us, you know, not much change other than we were in different countries.

Well, you. You integrate your Children. So I remember you and I met in New York. We were going to Penguin because your new business that you subsequently sold was called Ultimate Bundles. Congratulations on exiting from that.

Thank you.

Yeah. And you were just starting to explore who may be a potential acquirer. So we met with Penguin and two things that were remarkable. First of all, we meet in New York and you're with your son and it's his business is normal and, and he's listening. You know, he's not participating necessarily, but he's listening.

Yeah.

And then what I thought was remarkable was, okay, I go to the meeting now you're like, okay, my son's gonna stay here in this cafe. I think he lit up a cigarette. He was 8 and he sat. He stayed at the cafe for the half hour meeting. You know, that is the antithesis of a helicopter parent. He had confidence. You don't see that in 8 year olds. Tell me about that experience.

Well, we give our kids a lot of freedom. You know, we like really care. We're observant is what's happening, but we give them lots of freedom and because that's what they're going to need when they're an adult, you know, we think of ourselves as not just making. We're not just trying to build good kids, we're trying to build confident, successful adults. So we like try to, you know, start with who do they need to be when they're on their own and, and that, that informs our thinking for how we, you know, the kind of things we do with them. He takes, you know, cadence and you mentioned him, he, he takes tuk tuks all around Guatemala. When we're there, we have sort of a.

By himself.

Comfortable with. By himself. Yeah.

Wow. That's a motorcycle with the little cart behind it, effectively, right?

Yeah, yeah, exactly.

Yeah.

He pays for it himself and gets to places, picks up groceries, picks up the other kids.

As you travel internationally, is that the norm? Is that what kids do normally? And it's the American culture that's more helicoptery or is that, is that everywhere?

Yeah, I would say the American culture and Canadian culture is more sort of helicopter. Sure. That seems to be the new norm. But I would say outside it's. I mean, it's still true in other places, but less than in North America for sure.

Is your family, your children in particular, become more entrepreneurial? Are they participating in the business in a passive way or direct way?

Oh, oh, yeah.

How?

And we've always, I mean, I share the financial statements with the kids because I want them to be Financially, I want them to understand what they mean. We discuss at the dinner table lots of times business challenges that we're having and invite them to give us feedback and thoughts on how they could even if we don't take any of their ideas. And sometimes they're great ideas, but it's just about building that literacy with them. They've been involved in active roles like my oldest daughter, Abigail. She worked as a customer service person for Ultimate Bundles, but she had to get the job herself. I coached her on how to do it and I said to my team, you only hire her if, if she's the best person for the job and she's got to earn it. And I'm not going to hire her or fire her. That's up to you guys. And I told her that, like you got to get the job on your own.

Yeah.

But I wanted her to have some, you know, some, some experience there. But they have all started, you know, my oldest three kids have all started tons of little businesses and my daughter's running a little agency right now and you know, things like that.

So, so can you ever turn off the entrepreneurship though? So I'm thinking, you know, I'm at the office, I come home, I get home, you know, 6, 6:30, and I'm not talking work, you know, and so, so there's a shut off for me and maybe that's good. Me it's bad. But for you it sounds like it's a 24 hour family immersed. Is there anything else you talk about? Like how do you bifurcate business in life or do you.

Yeah, I don't know. Somehow we've, we've kind of fallen into a rhythm where I don't work. You know, I mean at the moment we've sold all of our, our businesses so we have a little more free time at the moment. But when I was working, didn't work all day, I worked when it was necessary and would go do some homeschooling with the kids or we'd go see things, you know, in all these countries that we went to. But the truth is we really love business. Like for me it's a, it's not just a way to make money. It's, it's, I don't know, it's the epitome of human freedom, like the fact that we get to, to engage in this. So it doesn't feel like something I particularly want to turn off. I don't always want to talk about it for sure.

Yeah.

But it's not like I have to draw A hard line we just generally enjoy talking about. The kids love it. They love the idea of making money.

Because I guess it translates to freedom for them, right?

Yeah.

So you had the music business, you went remote and you managed it remotely. You sold that company, if I recall, y. You. You started Ultimate Bundles, which was where you package the expertise and training of many industry experts as a package and sell it. You sold that company. Now, is this the first time you're without an active business as we're talking right now?

So, yes, we started and sold four, and it's the first time we haven't had.

Okay.

At least two businesses in the last 10 years.

So what does that feel like?

Oh, man. I'm having a bit of an identity crisis right now. What do I do with myself? I feel like I'm 18. I've got like 15 business ideas and I don't know which one to do. And my wife keeps saying that I need to, you know, just take. Just. Just like relax for a little bit. Like, take a break.

Yeah. Do you think you're going to be able to do that?

I don't know. I had a couple of business meetings this morning for about three hours, and the new project I'm considering working on, but I'm also doing things I love. I love photography, and I've been spending a lot of time on that as if it's a job.

Yeah.

So, yeah, I probably mix a bit of. Bit of relaxing time and a bit of entrepreneurship for a while.

Okay. So as you consider the new venture, is. Do you sense, is there a risk because you just sold Ultimate Bundles recently, Is there a risk of going in too fast, too soon? Maybe you're missing the activity, but you might step into something that's not your. Your opportunity, your true opportunity for yourself. I mean, do you feel there's a risk or do you. Do you even see that?

Yeah, it's something I haven't considered. Mike, that's a great point.

I don't know.

I don't know. Yeah, it could be. I mean, I've got a couple of ideas that I've been wanting to do for years, and this gives me the opportunity, and I'm really excited about them. They're big. Like, they're bigger than anything I've ever done. Like, I want to do Billion Dollar Company. I'll tell you about it some other time. But. But, you know, I'm really excited about. I want something that's gonna really stretch me and make me have to grow. But also, I do think there's Some benefit to just, like, pausing for a little while and letting the current situation sink in and.

Yeah.

You know, give some time for things to percolate. So. But I have to. I have to put so much effort into sitting back and not doing anything, like, Interesting.

Yeah, I think that's an entrepreneurial challenge. Is actually relaxing. We had a guest on or who's going to be on upcoming episode that talks about the. The power of pause. I'm curious about your children because we're talking about the entree family here. This is now a shift for your family. Do. Do things continue as normal? Do you continue to travel and explore or businesses sold. And we're settling back in. In Vancouver for a while.

Well, I mean, technically, last week we were supposed to head out. My son and I were supposed to go on a paragliding trip and paraglide over the dunes of France. And then my family was supposed to join us for a few months. My wife's pregnant with our six. That's the only reason we were gonna come back. And then plan to go back out in October for a few months. But, you know, Covid has changed those.

Changed everything.

Yeah.

So you're anchored at home for a while.

We're stuck at home doing some home projects. It also gives me lots of opportunity to think of new business ideas.

Yeah.

Yeah. Well, I'm curious with your home now, you were renting before you went on this travel. 80 countries. Where do you. Where's home? Do you have a home?

Yeah, we decided about, I'd say in 2000. What is it now? 2020, 2017, 2016.

Yeah.

We thought, okay, you've heard this. Maybe this concept that you need to give kids roots and wings.

Yeah, I have heard of that. Yeah. There's actually a program called Roots and Wings for kids.

Yeah.

Okay. Yeah. It's a Montessori thing, actually.

I think. Yes, it is.

I think it's this idea of roots and wings without. We've done the wings really well. I mean, quite literally in flying, but also just in terms of giving the kids adventure and, like, letting them see the world. But we hadn't done a good job of the roots, and we could see that affecting our kids then not having a lot of friends when we went back home. And so we decided to kind of split that up instead of traveling all the time to travel kind of anywhere between four to six or seven months a year. And the rest of the time, really digging into the community that we're in, just to try and have that balance.

Interesting, interesting. So going Forward. What about your children now? Are they starting businesses? Your daughter's old enough potentially now. What's their plans?

So my oldest daughter's 15. I mean, they've all started, like, businesses that I can think. And they're really smart because their first customer is always me smart.

It's guaranteed money.

Yeah.

Captive Claudians, but.

So my daughter runs this little writing agency where she hires technical writers to write about scientific topics and economics and stuff like that, and then get some jobs on. On Elance and other platforms like that. And she's also just wrote and published a cookbook with a bunch of her friends. They got a big advance and it's. It's coming out in May.

Oh, I remember you talking about that. Yeah. With a mainstream publisher, I think, right?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. They got. They got 15,000 pre orders. Which.

God. Kelsey, could you. Could we get two pre orders?

Kels?

Wow.

So anyway, so she's very much entrepreneurially motivated. She just done lots of little things. And I encourage them. Experiment, you know, like, try something, learn from it. I don't care if you do it long term. Like, just. What did you learn from that experiment? My son and I have. He wants to start a. He wants to manufacture travel chargers because it's something that we've had a hard time.

Yeah.

With every travel.

Yeah.

And so we bought him a 3D printer. He's been. He's been modeling them on blender. And then we conduct interviews of engineers together.

Yeah.

And I'm sure they think it's weird. He's like, you know, a kid.

Yeah.

But he comes prepared with questions and asks them, you know, things. And for me, I don't care what they think. Like, it's a good education for him.

Yeah.

We've got an engineer picked out and once he's finished the initial prototype, we'll. We'll start working on that. We're going to do a Kickstarter campaign.

For that remarkable and Entree family. Ryan, we got a role. If our audience wants to learn more about what you got going on, is there a way for them to check you out?

Yeah, they can check us@entrefamily.com and wonderlingfamily.com Entre family is more of an entrepreneurial kind of stuff and Wonderling Family is more about our travel. And at the moment, most of the updates are happening on underlingfamily on Instagram. For wonderlingfamily on Instagram. They can keep up with us there. Yeah, I think that's it.

Great. Yeah. It's a fascinating story. I'm so happy I got to know you over the years now. And just watching from afar, I remember doing a call. You were in a yurt or something like that. The last call we did, and you and Stephanie, it was just amazing to see you experiencing life in such a way that is atypical, at least for me. So I'm proud of what you're doing and who you're inspiring. Thanks for joining us today, Ryan.

Thanks, friend.

Thank you.

Good to see you.

So we'll have. We'll have all that stuff in the show notes, of course. And you guys check out what Ryan's doing. What an impressive family, but just beautiful people. Really contributing to a new paradigm for folks. We're gonna share what we learned in just a second. I do want to thank nextiva for making the show a reality first. Nice. Jeremy. Jeremy. I was. I pictured. I just say J bone. And when Jeremy, he saw his.

The business cards.

He saw his business cards, got all pissed. Jerem.

I was like, this is hilarious.

Yeah. How could. How could that happen?

That happens all the time. Nobody can spell my name properly.

I emailed Liz as she's designing. I'm like, make Jeremy's cards with just J E R emy. And she goes, well, okay, any typos on here? And I'm like, no, it's all right. And I had. I'm the one who put the ey at the end, even though I said your card.

That's fun.

I want to thank next. Steve, voiceover. IP provider that has gone total communication platform. So if you have clients that you need to communicate via video conference, phone, social media, it integrates into one single platform. It is the most sophisticated communication platform at a small business price. Nextiva.com We've been using them for years and love them. Okay, so I think, Amy, why don't you go first? What'd you learn from Ryan?

Oh, my gosh. I just love what they're doing with their kids. I think it is just mind blowing to give them those opportunities. And I'm listening to these business ventures they're diving into. It's. It's amazing. Absolutely amazing. I loved every. I loved all of it.

Do you think you would do that with your family if you had the opportunity?

I don't know if I'm brave. I. I really would love to, like, I really would love to if I had the. The courage to do that. Absolutely.

I would love it because independently, like, you and Chris travel frequently. I know you don't like to fly, but You. You get out there and do it. Yeah, you do it, Will. He's been off. He's been out of the country a few times, if I recall correctly. He's studying abroad.

He studied in Ireland and he's. Yeah, he's been. He's been hopping around quite a bit.

And John Henry. John Henry's gonna get out there soon, too.

Well, we were supposed to be in Paris this week, and Covid busted that plan, so.

Covet freaking company.

That should be freaking coveted. Kelsey, what'd you learn?

I loved everything. I mean, I love them, just like you said. I just feel like they're incredible human beings. They're just so lovely and warm and intelligent. But I think I love the most their sort of playfulness to experiment in the name of improving. I think as we live our lives, that's the best way to grow, is just to try new things, even if it feels sort of unprecedented or. Or there's no real data to prove that it's the best way. Yeah, just to go for it. And. And that's where you learn. And especially to then instill that in your children is so incredible.

Yeah, agreed.

I like that he said he doesn't care what other people think. And, you know, to have an engineer on there and have his kid there, I just like that he said that. I don't really care about that. I'm sure he cares about the engineer in the relationship, but if there's a negative context or perception from the engineers, like, that's irrelevant. It's about my children. I like that. I also, like you said, don't dumb things. I don't dumb things down for my kids. He just shared the way it is. And of course you're going to learn it. Have you ever worried about not having enough cash on hand? Just two words, I think, you know, trust and empower. Especially, you know, with the. With his kids, but also, I mean, with your employees and people that you work with. I think that's that's really important.

Yeah.

I don't trust you guys, and I. I don't empower y' all. I disempower you.

He totally helicopters.

I helicopter everyone.

You. You voxer the hell out of.

I am a boxer. I. I Boxer. Like that.

Take that toy away.

I know we're gonna delete Boxer.

If you delete Boxer, you. You end my life. Like, Jeremy will send me. He'll send one question. I'll box, like, six responses.

So I. I told Kelson. I didn't tell you.

Change his mind four different times on our series.

That's true.

I didn't mean that Again, like on Monday, when you're like, yeah, I remember. And you're like, oh, I don't recall.

Yeah.

Oh, my God. So.

So for those listening who don't know what Voxer is, Voxer is like a walkie talkie app for the phone.

Yeah.

And Mike, you love this thing. And what was really hilarious, like a.

Stream of consciousness for him.

It's a stream. That's true. Truth.

The notification is so loud, especially when you're not expecting it. And so the other day I sent an email and I said, hey, I worked through the weekend, so I was going to take off Monday. And then you're like, yeah, cool. And then at 6 o' clock in the morning, and it scared the crap out of me. And I was like, why is he doing this at 6:00 clock?

Oh, geez.

I said I was taking off.

Yeah, you can turn the notifications off. I know.

That's my fault.

You gotta do that.

Yeah, that's funny. It's all good.

It is a stream of consciousness for me. That's so funny. All right, so, you know, that's everything we learned. Are we doing a game?

We, we were gonna do a game, but in lieu of that, since it's the last episode.

Yeah.

You know, for the listeners, I don't think a lot of. I mean, there's so much work that goes in this podcast, and you've done 306 episodes.

Yeah.

Which is one a week is like six years worth of podcasts. So I just want to thank you and Amy and Kelsey because it's so much work, and I think that the team does a really good job, and there's a lot of really, really good information for people, and you don't make any money off of this, you know, so it's like, it's. It's great.

Thank you. I appreciate you saying that, Jeremy.

Thank you, Jeremy.

Thank you. And thank you, Mike and Kelsey. For putting this content out there. It's good.

Thank you.

It's just. You know what? Thank you. I appreciate. And I received that, Amy. And it's funny, I. I heard someone saying about thank yous that people. Kelsey, I'm not picking on you now, but since you picked on me, I will. As you said. No, no, thank you. Is that it's very common for us to disregard the appreciation of others. And that is a air quote. Disrespectful is. It's meant out of respect, but it's showing disregard, so. And I know, Kelsey, you would never meet.

Did you hear that on our podcast?

What about our podcast?

We had a guest who. That was like, the big premise.

All right, so that's disrespectful right there. Could you stop being just.

And you're supposed to say you're welcome.

Not like 306 episodes of you being an ass. You just.

I'm glad you learned so much from the podcast.

Gosh, Kelsey, you are relentless. And, Jeremy, I also want to thank you and acknowledge that you've taken over the technical aspects of this.

Yeah, Jeremy, great job.

And this is great.

It's been fun.

Yeah, you're just. You're just allowing us to produce content faster, better be more responsive, and you're adding these elements of funness to it. So thanks for doing that, man.

Thanks. Yeah, yeah. I mean, for. For all the listeners. You know, all the old podcasts are still going to stay up, but we're just going to change the format and change to a new name. So please follow all up in your business if you want more content like this. And also we want to try and make it more interactive and have a lot of, you know, like you said, fast response with people. So we want to do live calls and questions and stuff.
