A Treasurers Tale

A treasury professional explains why storytelling matters for career growth in finance. Learn how to communicate your achievements to land better jobs and promotions, plus hear about upcoming career events and guest speakers.
Once upon a time, a treasurer achieved something. Oh, hang on. No, no, no. I'm a Treasury professional. I don't tell stories, not even my own. Don't worry, after that performance, I'm not expecting any call from the Oscars anytime soon. No, that was me just making a very blatant point to you guys. Now, storytelling, I know is a skill, but. But it seems that a lot of you treasury professionals, you're very good at when you're sitting there with your banks, with your business partners and everything else, but you're not necessarily quite so good at when you talk about yourselves and your own careers. It's costing in promotions. That's what we talked about in this week's newsletter. Tell your story it otherwise it's going to affect job promotions, say pay rises, job opportunities, because you can talk about the impact you have. You know, who else is going to know? How else are you going to tell your story? Had Meredith Vance NTT data on the podcast recently. She was brilliant. She didn't just read through her cd, she went told her story, decisions, challenges, lessons, effortless. She was just great at it. And then we had the same with Emma Haywood. She sends herself a weekly email capturing what she and the team have achieved. She keeps it there, not for show, for reference. When the time comes, CFO CEO walks up, she's got a record ready at hand. You guys can do it. So what I'm asking you to do this week for your weekly win is whenever you see this video, just look back at the last week and record it in your outlook and then put a little reminder in your outlook for next week or other diary programs are available, but put it out there and just say next week. Oh yeah, what did I do this week? What did I achieve? Send yourself an email. Just do it the once thinking stories. What was the challenge? What did you do and what changed? Did you save money for the company? Did you streamline the process? Did you implement some new AI, did you knew a new tool? Just practice talking about it, not just doing the work but actually telling people about it. Storytelling. There you go. It's going to help you. We've got our treasure Career Corner live coming up in a couple of weeks in London, then Dublin. You're gonna have to meet people. They're going to ask you what do you do? If you just say I'm a treasurer. Yeah, there's going to be a hundred plus treasures in the room. No, I'm a treasurer who does this. And this is what we do at our. This is how I help my company improve. There you go. Nice little elevator pitch there as well. Also want to confirm, I've got my first guest for our Chicago Treasury Career Corner live in September, 11th of September. I've got Rob Anderson, director of capital planning, GE Healthcare. Rob's great. I actually placed Rob way back when, Under Armour, so many years ago. Great guy. He's coming, joining me in Chicago. We're just working on the other couple of guests, getting them secured. But also I can announce my first two for the week after on the 17th. Yeah, 17th. Wednesday 17th, we're back at the offices of Crane 11. Thank you very much, guys there, Ken and the team. We've got our guests confirmed. Two of them. We've got Predicto Bagchi, previously a podcast guest. We'll put a link in the show. Notes underneath from Zimmer Biomet. Brilliant guy. Lovely. Love Predicto. It's gonna. He's gonna be alive on stage with me. Then he's also going to join Dennis Brower from Element Solutions. So some great guests. They'll be sharing their stories. You should learn how to share yours, too. So as I say what I want you to do, make one note or add one sentence to your LinkedIn profile this week. Just one thing. Yeah. That's what you've achieved now. You're ahead of 90% of your peers who've updated nothing in the last six months. There you go. Because looking for you. Maybe it's not just about looking for your next job. What if your next job comes looking for you? Okay.
