Dan Welham Gives Some Advice About the State of The European Treasury Recruitment

Dan Welham discusses treasury recruitment trends in Europe, drawing on survey data about what makes treasury professionals happy at work. He shares insights from a recent conference and breaks down the current state of the job market for treasury roles.
Hi, everyone. So I just wanted to give you guys a quick update on a few things treasury recruitment related. First thing I wanted to talk about, and it's probably the question I get asked the most, what is the state of the treasury recruitment market in Europe at the moment? Well, we expected things to pick up in September once summer was out the way and people have returned from their holidays, but the truth is that didn't really happen. We were scratching our heads a little bit, and then all of a sudden, come October, November time, it's gone crazy again and we're certainly making up for that quieter period. So, across Europe, we've got roles that we are recruiting for at the moment in Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands and France. These roles are across all levels, from treasury analysts and consultants to treasury managers and more senior opportunities as well. To add to that, we're coming out of 2018 now and we're heading into a new year where typically people start to reassess their careers and look for their next move. New Year, New May. So, with that being said, we expect the market to continue to get busier. So, in essence, I guess the message is now's the time to get in touch. Whether you're a candidate looking for a new role for yourself or a client looking to add to your team, we're here to help guide you, give advice and find the perfect match for you. And you never know, the right job or candidate might be right around the corner for you. The next thing I wanted to speak to you guys about is. So, me and Mike have just returned from the first ever Austria Treasurers Conference hosted by Actor. One of the key themes we discussed and were asked about a lot while we were there was the role of treasurers. Was it under threat by the advanced technology within Treasury? At the moment, everyone's wondering, are robots going to take over and take all your jobs? Well, guys, I hate to break it to you, but yes, yes, they are. But come on, seriously. Technology has come a long way and with that, a lot of the routine tasks have been automated. But as you know, treasury isn't all about the routine tasks. Your roles need different reactions to unexpected events. This cannot be done by a machine. Any machine will only help you and support you in making decisions. Although you can't predict the future, you can certainly plan for it, because change is the only constant. And if you can predict the future, let me know, as I'd love to know next week's lottery numbers. I wanted to also share some exciting news. And actually, it's exclusive to Anyone watching this video? Some of the early results from our global treasury salary survey are here. So we've had nearly 600 treasury professionals take part now from all over the world and the results are really interesting. So out of 600 or nearly 600 of you that have taken part now, 72% of you. So nearly three quarters of you guys are happy in your roles. Great news. So that means that me, Mike and the rest of the team should start looking for new jobs instead of being treasury recruiters then? Maybe not, because actually it turns out that 8 in 10 of you are still interested in looking at new roles. So our jobs are safe for now, as you guys feel that now may be the time for a move after all. But we also wanted to know what was making 28% of you guys unhappy. Our survey suggests there are three key factors affecting how you're feeling. The top point was was that the work wasn't fulfilling enough or lacked the variety you're seeking. The second was because of your boss or your manager. It seems when we have spoken to our participants, many treasury professionals don't seem to be getting the coaching or development maybe you hoped for. The third major factor was a lack of work life balance. So you're spending hours upon end in the office and you're missing out on quality time with your family or friends. You're not getting the chance to recharge your batteries. All of these factors would make anyone unhappy. Let's be honest now, you'd think that in a salary survey cash would be a big issue, but turns out it's maybe not so much. Amazingly, only 7% of you are unhappy because of your salary. It just goes to show that money isn't everything. And there's so many other factors that can contribute to your happiness. Anyway, that's enough from me, guys. And I look forward to helping you guys find your next role really soon.
