It’s always easier to look for a role when you’re in a role. Why?

A speaker explains why job searching is easier when you already have a job, covering the psychology of unemployment, salary expectations, and career moves for treasury professionals.
Oh, it's always, it's always easier to look for a role when you're in a role. Why? Because you don't feel pressure, you're not pressured, you won't feel any desperation. If you like, you can take your time. You're calm, considered, you're in control. So you're doing interviews, you're thinking, I don't need this role, I might take it if I want it. But when I'm not working, or when you're not working, that's when pressure creeps in. So this is based on a real story I had with a great conversation with a really great candidate. They've been let go from their company. The company had made cutbacks and their role had just disappeared. They were frustrated, understandably so, but they had only reached, if you like, £60,000. And they said to me I was due, I was due to have a bonus and I was, okay, fine, I understand that. So with that bonus and the basic, I was going to be getting up to 80,000. Fantastic. Because I'm worth 80. Oh, okay. Being told what someone is worth is always a bit of a flag, if you like, because worth doesn't pay the bills. I didn't actually create this situation, but I'm here to try and help fix it. But if you're not in a role right now, not in a job, and you're holding out for a salary that doesn't match what the current market is paying, well, that's going to be a tough one. Because they were saying, well, hang on, I was due this do this. And I said, well, hang on, if I get you another role, does that mean all new roles? And they said, yes, I only should run things past you that are on 80k plus. And they were like, yeah, I'm like, okay, but you're on 60 and you're not, you're not in work at the moment. No, but I need to catch up with the market. I'm like, okay. And I tried to coach them and I said, look, is there any place. I said, what about maybe we're getting something late 60s, early 70s, I should run it across your desk. No, not interested. I said, okay. My advice in that situation, as I try to give, is go into a role. If you need to prove your value, you can earn that bonus and get yourself moving again. In 6 to 12 months, it's likely you're going to be back at 80k, but this time you burned it. You're progressing, you're going up the. Going up the ladder, if you like. And It's a challenge for me as a recruiter because at the end of the day, I want to help you find that next role. That's my job. So if a client asked me as well, on the flip side, the client asked me, said, is this person? What's this person worth? I will then look at what other people and actually I think there are people as good, if not better than that person at 80,000. So it's a bit of a challenge, you know, because we sit in the middle. We want to help you guys. There are other people in the market with strong experience, but we're here to help you. That's our job, to give you advice.
