Week 2: SMART Goals

Mike Richards from a treasury recruitment company explains SMART goals for treasury professionals. The video covers setting professional, personal, and financial goals, then moves into CVs, LinkedIn profiles, and interview practice for career development.
Hi guys, it's Mike Richards here from the treasury recruitment company. We're on to week two of the program. So it had a great first week with our treasury skills wheel. Over 80 people joined our Zoom call. We have 250 people signed up for the program itself. But what we were finding when we talked to people was giving them real clarity with regards to their strengths. It also highlighted some of them, their weaknesses and help them work out where they needed to improve themselves. So that's what week two is about. Professional goals, personal aims, financial rewards. Number one. What are your professional goals and are they smart goals? If you do this week's assignment, you'll understand what I mean by smart goals, especially in relation to treasury, specifically. A few examples I might give include if you're a Treasury manager, you might need to gain the skills and experience to make the next up step up to become an assistant treasurer. Within the next 12 months, you might be in a situation where you need to improve your project management skills. So you're streamlining bank relationships if you like, or it might be you want to achieve your first formal treasury qualification. Those are all your professional goals. But there was also a lot of personal aims. A lot of the time we think about these, but they're quite ill defined, they're very fluffy. A lot of the time it's because they're different to professional goals. Professional goals, a lot of the time might pay the bills. These, a lot of the time help me maintain that supposed work life balance. But how often do we consider them? They're about us and in life everything seems to sometimes conspire to take over. So we try and do that. So you're trying to do you put professional goals, personal goals, with what in mind? Financial rewards. Now you guys are treasury professionals, you want to get paid, right? When I mean right, I mean fairly, I mean paid for the jobs you do. Have you compared yourselves against your peers? We've got an easy answer for you. Yep, it's the Global Treasury Salary Survey. If you just visit treasurysalary.com 330/ of you have taken part in 2020 so far. I know of the 250 of you guys, over 80 of you have taken part. But that still leaves two thirds of you haven't. Now it's going to help you decide what salary you want to earn in maybe a year, three years or as much as five years, you can set these goals. You guys need to have a target for your salary because if you don't get one, how are you going to know where to aim for over the next few weeks. We're going to move on. So next week do CVs, resumes, week after LinkedIn and social media. Then we also moving on to interview practice and Skype interviewing zoom interviews. I know you do a lot of that, so look forward to all that. Many thanks.
