In this solo monologue, Mike Andes recounts his first week after relocating from Washington to Texas to launch a new location of his lawn‑care company with the goal of reaching $1 million in revenue within a year. He explains how, unlike his previous operation that offered a wide array of services (greens, tree work, irrigation, etc.), he deliberately limited the new business to just two core services—mowing and fertilization/weed control—to keep the model simple, delegable, and scalable. He describes the immediate challenge of receiving the first three leads for services he does not provide, and how refusing those leads raises his customer acquisition cost (CAC) because he must spend more on ads to acquire a paying customer. He argues that many home‑service owners add services out of fear of missing revenue, which creates operational complexity: multiple vehicles, specialized equipment, varied certifications, and a reliance on a few technicians who become bottlenecks. This complexity leads to burnout, inability to systematize, and difficulty selling or delegating the business. Andes reflects on the psychological pressure (FOMO) to accept any job early on, but maintains that tolerating higher CAC and saying no to unsuitable leads enables a lean, repeatable operation that can eventually be handed off or sold. He acknowledges the reputational risk of not hitting the $1 M target but emphasizes that the long‑term benefit of a simplified, profitable, and owner‑friendly business outweighs short‑term revenue concerns.
