Answering someone's question on can you take your thyroid medication at night? Is it better to take it at night? And this is in response to a Recent post by Dr. Weston Childs if you don't know him, you should check him out. He's awesome. Really answering the question that you can't really take all of your thyroid medications at night, nor is it better to in cases of Levothyroxine, Synthroid, tiroscent these are inactive hormones that are extremely long acting. He's advocating for taking them at night to increase your absorption and in that case I say sure, why not. However, in cases of active thyroid hormones, things like lyothyrene, cytomel, NP, thyroid armor, and then the older WP and nature throid, these medications have active T3 in them. That T3 is short acting and the T3 in it is actually what makes you feel good. So so these meds peak and kind of trough in their accessibility to you in about three to eight hours depending on which one they are. So if you take it at night, not only is it going to completely disrupt your sleep, you're going to miss out on feeling good throughout the day. So not only do I not advocate for taking these meds at night, I actually dose my patients twice throughout the day, in the morning and around 2 to 3pm so that they can feel good not only for the morning but for the bulk of the day. So I hope that helps. I hope that offers some clarity. Of course, of course creating a system to maximize the absorption of your thyroid medication is important, but it's not so important that you sacrifice getting the accessibility and the benefits of the medication by taking it at night. So if you have more questions about this or anything else, post them below and maybe I'll answer your question next.
