If I could give people struggling with a thyroid condition one piece of advice and only one, it would be the I'm Nicole McPherson, I'm a PA, I'm a thyroid expert, I'm the founder of Modern Thyroid Clinic, and my day job is to give people with complex thyroid disorders their lives back. So if I had to boil it down to one and only one thing, you guys, it is people need to be talking with their doctor about adding in an active thyroid hormone. People on thyroid medications are almost ubiquitously, all of them on inactive hormone, and they can't activate it, so they're stuck in this state of feeling crappy. Despite being on medication, people can have miraculous shifts in their energy, cognition, libido, hair, skin metabolism with the addition of an active thyroid hormone like lyothyrenine or cytomel to their T4 medication. That's like levothyroxine. Synthroid medicine does not routinely do this. This is something that your doctor likely won't just do on the first round. It's a discussion that honestly has to be had almost 100% of the time. So if I had one piece of advice, that would be it.
