In this Arabic sermon, Mohamed Basiouni explains the Islamic rulings concerning oaths (اليمين). He begins by quoting the Qur'an (Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:89) which outlines the expiation (كفارة) for breaking an oath: feeding ten poor people, clothing them, freeing a slave, or fasting three days if one cannot afford the former. He then classifies oaths into three categories: 1. يَمين اللَغو (idle oaths) – casual statements that do not bind a person and carry no penalty. 2. يَمين المُنَعَقَدَة (binding oaths) – serious promises that, when broken, require the Qur'anic expiation. 3. يَمين الغَموس (severe oath) – a grave oath that can lead a person to punishment in the Hereafter; it has no expiation but demands sincere repentance, seeking Allah’s forgiveness, and avoiding violation of others’ rights. Basiouni details the practical steps for expiation: feeding the poor from one’s own household food, providing clothing, or fasting three days. He stresses that if one cannot afford feeding or clothing, fasting is the alternative. He warns that violating the rights of other people is a serious sin, whereas violating only Allah’s rights can be remedied through repentance. The sermon concludes with a moral reminder to honor one’s oaths, seek forgiveness, and act kindly toward others.
