What's up everybody? Welcome back to the Draymond Green Show. On today's show, I've got some thoughts I wanna share about a few teams, players around the league for both good and bad reasons. Gotta tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I'll also share my favorite NBA podcasters, address a couple reasons why my name is trending, and get nostalgic with you guys in another Golden Days segment. So let's go, let's get into it. [MUSIC] Before going around the association, And I have a couple things that I want to address. Number one was the things on First Take. I obviously, that was on my football show. Why is Draymond Green talking football with Jordan Schultz? But they really tied the basketball side into it. And specifically, in specific, Mad Dog tied the basketball side into it when he said, you know, Completely unsolicited. You know, Draymond Green wouldn't play on the '86 Celtics team behind Robert Parish, Kevin McHale, and Bill Walton. And although it was on my football show, and Mad Dog, you talk football, so have some respect. Know that it's football. I don't come on your show and say, hey, you're talking football now. You were talking basketball, but wait a minute, you were talking baseball. We don't do that. So have some respect and take it for what it is. Take it for what it's worth. I was talking football, but since you want to talk basketball, we can do that as well. Before, I want to acknowledge what Stephen A. said, and I said this on my football show, and I'll say it again here. I actually apologized to Dak Prescott, not because, you know, I said Dak Prescott a bum, and I explained what I meant by the term bum. I'm not someone who gets very hype off regular season statistics or big games in the regular season if you can't back them up in the playoffs. And that's what I was speaking to. But Dak is a good brother. I got the utmost respect for Dak Prescott. And the way people took the word bum, I don't want it to be taken that way. So I am a man. I can apologize and say I was wrong. I don't think Dak's a bum. And getting that out the way. So I'm very respectful. Respectful. Stephen A. and what he said, I appreciate that. Marcus Spears spoke about the sports being different, and I agree, the sports are different. If there's anyone who respects what goes on on the football field and the work that it takes to get there, that don't do it, it's me. I respect it. I tried to get out there in the spring game in college and it wasn't good, obviously. Yeah. Wasn't serious. I went out there for one day of practice and played in the spring game. It was just my last opportunity to ever play football in my life. And I love football. I wanted to do it. And so I went out there and did it. It was a great experience, one that I wouldn't change for anything in the world. But I do understand how hard it is, how hard the sport is. And I also understand that Dak is a cowboy. Dak is a cowboy. And Swagu, that's them, them his people. So I understand why you would make that correlation, but I must say to Swagu is, I respect what y'all do. Don't take it for granted at all. I respect how hard the NFL is. I respect that guys put on a helmet and shoulder pads and say, "I'm about to go run into somebody every day." And whatever happens, happens. I got the utmost respect for that. So also a huge fan of the sport, huge fan of the game, huge fan of a lot of guys in particular. Got the utmost respect for that. However, to act like the NFL is harder than the NBA, I think is utterly ridiculous. To act like the NBA is harder than the NFL, I think is utterly ridiculous because we can all sit and make a bunch of reasons, come up with a list of a bunch of reasons of why it's harder. For instance, We played last night, we play again tonight. You know, for instance, we travel for 10 days in a row, y'all are gone for a night. You know, you're home all week, you're in one place, the nutrition is the same. Like we can talk all of these different reasons of why one is harder than the other one. The fact of the matter is I don't really have the urge or want to do that because I just have the utmost respect for the game being played. And I respect how hard it is. So I'ma just keep it at that. And I, but I also appreciated, you know, some of the stuff Swagoo said and his opinion, which was kind of in opposition to my opinion. I respect that. Very well said, my brother. Much love, no disrespect. No disrespect. Great career he had, great career his son gonna have. I don't know if y'all have seen his son Marcus Spears Jr., but young fella is an animal. So, I got the utmost respect, but Mad Dog, let me get back to you. So, you brought up Robert Parish. Robert Parish was a 9-time All-Star, was a 4-time champion, He made one second team All-NBA and he made one third team All-NBA. I'm not a 9-time All-Star, but I am a 4-time All-Star. I am a 4-time champion. I've made All-Defense second team. I mean, I've made All-NBA second team. I've also made All-NBA third team. I have 9 All-Defensive teams that Robert Parish don't have. I have one Defensive Player of the Year that Robert Parish doesn't have. And Kevin McHale, 3-time NBA champion, 7-time NBA All-Star, 1-time All-NBA First Team, 3-time All-Defensive First Team, 3-time All-Defensive Second Team, 2-time NBA Sixth Man of the Year. So he has a major award, 2 of them. I have a major award, 1 of them. Yeah, I've listed my accomplishments. We'll move on. I think I can sit at that table. Bill Walton, 2-time NBA champion, 1-time All-NBA First Team, 1-time Second Team, 2-time All-Defense First Team, an NBA MVP. Let's make no mistake about that, and an NBA Finals MVP. And just to go back to one thing that Swagoo said before I continue moving forward, he spoke about having that one game and how one game, how it matters. And in the NBA you get 7 games, but I must say this, Swagoo, I've played in several one-game situations in game 7. I actually had one of the best games of my career in game 7 at the NBA Finals. Unfortunately, we lost that game. And so I don't talk about that game much, but the fact of the matter is go check the tape. Yeah. Tape. I've definitely showed up in one game situation. So I understand a one game situation. Just want to throw that out there for Swagu. But back to this. Mad Dog. When you name these names, one thing's for certain, Mad Dog, when you throw these names out there, I got a seat at this table. When you look at my resume, by the way, two-time Olympic gold medalist. Let's not forget that. I got a seat at this table. So, however, when you mention these 3 guys, am I better than those 3 guys? It actually don't fucking matter. It's irrelevant. It's Mad Dog's way of sharing the knowledge that he has, which dates back to 1986 and possibly stops in '96. No, in all seriousness, I got a bunch of respect for Mad Dog. I'm not really here to take taking those shots. But I do think as Mad Dog has gotten up in his older age, that he goes back to like 1986 to make it make sense for him, to make like it his way to be able to speak. And so yeah, I don't think it fucking matters if I'm better than any one of those three guys. I don't, I actually don't think it matters at all that I'm better than any one of those three guys. I really don't. But my resume definitely sits at the table. And that's all that matters. So when you say, man, Draymond wouldn't play on that team, and then you name 3 Hall of Famers, I want you to understand, I don't take that as a slight at all. Nor do I walk around thinking I'm any one of those 3 guys, ever. Never would. Got the utmost respect for their careers and what they are and what they've done and who they are. I just don't walk around thinking that way, Mad Dog. But my resume definitely sits at the table. And that is what it is. But the utmost respect for those fellas, and no disrespect taken when you say, I can't play behind 3 Hall of Famers, I wouldn't play in front of 3 Hall of Famers. No disrespect taken. I appreciate you for actually pretty much admitting that I'm a Hall of Famer. Because you had to go to 3 Hall of Famers to discredit me and my career. So I thank you for admitting that you believe that I'm a Hall of Famer, Mad Dog. I appreciate that. The fact that the guys that you have to mention me with are all first ballot Hall of Famers. Yeah. No disrespect taken, my friend. I appreciate it. I thank y'all. Y'all said I was on the Shorts Report, by the way, on First Take. And my guy Jordan Schultz definitely has the Shorts Report, but make no mistake about it. My comment was made on why is Draymond Green talking football with Jordan Schultz? Make sure y'all go check that out. I know there's been a lot of talk over the last couple days about KD offense versus defense debate. And by the way, just so we're clear, there is no debate between me and KD. However, I love the way KD mix it up with people on Twitter. I love the way KD share all of his thoughts. And me and KD gonna always talk basketball and we gonna bump our gums a little bit. And it ain't no different here. KD says something, I made a statement. KD took that as me saying something back to them. KD put out a tweet and he said, well, well, if I'm not mistaken, he said, and the offense was question mark. And my response to KD is, number one, like I said, this ain't no beef. Ain't no beef between KD or Draymond Green, but we gonna talk our shit because that's what we both doing. We both love to do it. And we would do this sitting together with each other and y'all don't see it. We'll do it and y'all do see it. Make no mistake about it, ain't no goddamn beef. Anyway, KD says, and the offense was, and he was saying, and the offense was in regards, he was responding to me saying teams that play defense win championships. I wasn't saying that teams that play offense or the teams that play defense doesn't play offense, no. The fact of the matter is you have to be top 10 offensively and top 10 defensively to win an NBA championship. That's just the facts of the matter. When KD say, and the offense was, well, the offense was incredible. Just like their offense was incredible in Brooklyn and just like their offense was incredible in Phoenix. It was incredible. Yeah. Great offense, very tough to stop. But offense with no defense, we've seen that in NBA years past, we'll see that in the NBA for years to come. Offense, teams with offense and no defense. And so my point was, yeah, I— You show me a team that don't play defense, I'm gonna show you a team that don't win championships. My statement was, I mentioned, yeah, people that don't believe you need defense to win championships simply don't win. KD responded to me saying that. And what I'll say to K is, I said people that don't win championships. Kevin Durant has 2 championships. So I don't even know why he took my statement as a hit at him when I said people that don't win championships. You won 2 championships. Yeah. So that shouldn't include you unless you feel that that statement includes you. I personally don't because I personally know and I am personally aware, well aware, that you won 2 championships. So I don't live in that category, people that try to lessen KD's championships because I know everything about KD's championships and how important he was. So I'm not a part of that group of people. Yeah. But I think the proof speaks for itself. You know, you look at teams that has great defenses and great offenses, they win championships. Teams that have great defense and no great offense, they usually get to the playoffs and lose. Teams that have great offense and no defense, they usually get to the playoffs and lose or don't even make the playoffs at all. So fact of the matter is you need to be top 10 in both. Mm-hmm. After the break, I'm gonna get into the undefeated Thunder, the struggling Mavs and Pelicans, and much, much more. Back right after this. Welcome back. As I said, we are going to talk the world champion OKC Thunder. They are quietly 8-0, and I say quietly because they're just going about it and not many people are talking about it, but they're just doing what they do, beating every team they play against. They had a couple close ones.— to start the season off and they've just been ramping up and ramping up. Doesn't quite look like they have a championship hangover. But, you know, I think coming off a championship, especially as a young team, I've been in that position before. Like, you want more. I'm telling you, when we won our first championship, coming back into that season, the only thought I had was like, yeah, I just never want to not feel that feeling again. Like, it's almost stressful. Like, man, will I never feel that feeling again? Like, I have to feel that again. And so I think they're locked into that. Even without J Dub, by the way, they're locked into that and just showing you how much depth that they have, you know? And so when I look at this team, like, 8-0, you start thinking of our 2016 team, team that won 73 games. Like, you know, this is a team that they win a lot of games. Like they just have figured it out and you gotta give them credit. And so I do see some similarities in the teams, you know, great depth on both teams. When you compare their team to our 2016 team, have a great, incredible numero uno in Shea Gildress-Alexander, like Steph Curry. You know, Chet playing both ends of the floor, anchoring the defense. When J Dub come back, having an incredible number 2. You know, Hardenstein, you think about Andrew Bogut, you know, what he brought to the team. Like they, a lot of similarities. Aaron Wiggins coming off the bench, Caruso coming off the bench, remind me a lot of Andre Iguodala and Shawn Livingston coming off the bench. Yeah. Bitch, right? So I, you know, I think the teams definitely are interested when you take a look at both teams. Do they have any holes though? I don't know that they have many holes. I think you can definitely make it tough on them if you can get boxing elbows and if you got a switchable defense, you know, you, but like they're not really trying to get too much action to where it doesn't get to one-on-one anyway. So even if you're a switchable defense, I think they still can cause you a lot of problems. Um, but I think they definitely have the ability to put together an all-time regular season when you talk about their championship experience and pedigree and their youth. That's what I think really comes into play is their youth. Because in 2016, the one thing we had on our side was youth. Mm-hmm. And so in that gruesome NBA season, you're able to power through it due to the youth. And I think OKC sits right in that space. So I think, man, it's very interesting to watch this team. Shay's putting together another MVP caliber year. They're definitely going after another championship. At least obviously that's the goal. And they're looking like they're gonna make a run at it. Obviously you need great health and always wishing everyone great health, but love the way this team is looking. No championship hangover at all. But Shay is not a hangover, a hungover type of person. And you usually follow your leader. And Shay is leading them boys incredibly well. It's great to see. And moving forward and just speaking, you know, the Orlando Magic has struggled a bit. They obviously made the trade for Desmond Bane. I think they traded 5 first-round picks for Desmond Bane. Bane has struggled a bit in the interim. Obviously, you know, new team, gotta figure all that stuff out. Gotta figure the spots out, where you're getting the ball. You know, it's a different offense. You know, you're figuring all those things out. So I don't think that Desmond Bane won't figure it out. He'll eventually figure it out. He'll shoot better. But I think a lot of the conversation has been around, can you build a good team around Paulo? With the brand of basketball that Paulo plays, can you build a good team around him? And I say yes. I think Paulo is a winning basketball player, which is why the Orlando Magic has started to win more since Paulo has come there. I think you can build a good team around Paulo. I I think where Paulo's growth need to be is number one, shot selection. What is Paulo's go-to shot? Like, these are the things that I'd be talking to Paulo about if I was helping Paulo's development. What's your go-to shot? Like, if you're going to be a go-to scorer in this league, you have to have a go-to. And what is that for Paulo? You know, so that's what I would say to Paulo. It's not that he can't be, it's— Is he getting the proper path to it? Who's sharing with him that you need a go-to shot? Because again, you think about these teams and they don't really be having vets like that. They don't really be having veteran leadership. You know what I'm saying? Those things go beyond just coaching. Those things go to veteran leadership and someone who's been through it, helping you, telling you, man, you need this, you need that. And that's one of the downsides of these teams when they don't really have real veteran leadership. Yeah. And I think Paulo is kind of a casualty to that. So who's, who's requiring you to have a better shot selection that's not just the coaches that's not going to say something about that? You know, who's helping him grow from that veteran standpoint? And so I completely disagree with everyone who's trying to say Paulo can't play the brand of basketball to help win. I just don't think he's playing the right brand of basketball right now. But make no mistake about it. You can 1000% build a winning team around Paulo. They have, and then also Franz Wagner. I think Franz Wagner is incredible as well. I think they have to do a better job of finding their yin and yang. You know, like where do we differ? Where do we come at you in waves? I think they still need to figure out their yin and their yang, but both incredible players that you can build around. And I think Orlando Magic with that size, I think that they can definitely build around those guys, but you also have to help them figure out what building, what building actually looks like. And until you help them figure that out, it's gonna be a little tougher, but make no mistake about it. You 1,000% can win with Paulo Banchero. Also moving around the association, we got the Pelicans and the Mavericks are playing right now. Both teams have gotten off to rough starts. And I think there's reasons behind both of 'em, right? Like the Pelicans, you got Dejounte Murray out. Zion just went out. For the last 3 years, it's just, they haven't been able to stay healthy. And when you can't stay healthy in this league, you're fighting an uphill battle. When your best players aren't healthy, it's an uphill battle. Dejounte's still out. Dejounte is the leader of that team. Make no mistake about it. Just like any other team he's ever been on. Dejounte Murray is the leader of that team. You go find me any team in the NBA that loses their leader. See, in this league, we always wanna make the best player the leader. So everybody wants to make Zion the leader, but Zion isn't the leader. Dejounte Murray is the leader of that team. You go find me any team that lose their leader, and I'm gonna find you a team that's most, more than likely gonna struggle. I'll show you a team that's more than likely gonna struggle. And so it's been tough for New Orleans with the injuries. You never get to see really the full makeup of their roster because they've never been able to fully play together, you know? And so you never get to see how the pieces even fit, for real. And so I just think they're gonna continue to have a tough go at it if your stars can't stay healthy. And obviously DeJounte is a different situation. He tore his Achilles. But him, you know, not being able to play. When you're hurt, you're not with the team. They miss that leadership. They miss that dog. DeJounte a dog. And I think they missing that right now. So when you look at it, look at the full picture. You can't just look at a piece of the picture. You gotta look at the full picture. Yeah. And it's rough. And it's also rough that Willie Green will also be the one that ultimately takes the fall. And I think in 3 or 4 years, he won't been have got a fair shot. And it's just unfortunate. That's the way this business goes. Dallas, on the other hand, I think, you know, they don't have a point guard. It's hard to play in this league when you don't have a point guard. They're trying Cooper at point guard, which I understand it. You allow him to play with the ball in his hands. Letting him see different reads. He won't ultimately be a point guard, but you may believe that that can help his development. I think, you know, but when you look at this roster, like, Klay Thompson hasn't been able to do much. He doesn't have a point guard. You know, especially at this point in his career, having a point guard to set him up and get great looks is important. Without having a point guard, I'm not sure that Cooper Flagg really knows how Klay Thompson can help him. He's a rookie. Right, he doesn't really know the NBA game. He's just now learning the NBA game. He's the point guard. I'm not really sure he knows how Klay Thompson can help him. And I'm not sure he knows how to get AD involved. What spots AD like the ball? I'm not sure he knows he should even know where he like the ball. Again, those are all growing pains of a rookie, right? It's not that I don't think Cooper Flag's gonna be great. I think Cooper Flag's gonna be incredible. But we're asking a rookie who's not a point guard to be a great point guard. And that's just, that's just not how this works. And so in saying that, I think it's gonna be tough for them, but they can turn it around. They got the roster to turn it around. Does Kyrie come back? I don't know. He's still gonna have a ramp up period and getting back to really being Kyrie. So I just think they got a lot of things going against them right now this year. I think the one thing I would say about starting Cooper Flagg at point guard is, You just gotta be careful. It's not his real position. You know, you ask yourself the question, if Ben Simmons was allowed to be a power forward that can handle the ball the way he handled the ball, does his career turn out differently than making him a point guard? And so what I would just say about Cooper Flagg is you gotta be careful with playing him at point guard. I understand the thinking behind it, but the last thing you want is him to lose his confidence trying to play point guard. 'Cause once you lose your confidence in this league, it's nearly impossible to get it back. And even if you get it back, it's hard to get it back to the level that it once was, once where it could have been or where it should be. And so I would just say, be very careful with playing him out of position because if he loses confidence, it fucks up everything else. But, you know, this Dallas team will be good at some point. I just don't know that if it happens this year with the injuries that they're faced with. Yeah. And lastly, around the association, you know, obviously Steph was on Mind the Game the other day with Bron and Steve Nash. And I was recently asked what NBA player, current or former, do I think have the best podcast outside of my own, of course. I'll give you my top 3. I think Club 520 is incredible. I think Jeff T is good, really good. I think, You know, B-Hen is incredible. B-Hen kind of brings this vibe of like, "I ain't Jeff Teague, I'm gonna say what the hell I wanna say. It ain't nothing y'all can do about it." And I think it brings a great mix and they stay in their lanes, you know? Host, host. B-Hen be B-Hen. Jeff Teague does his thing, you know? And so I really enjoy— Yeah. Club 520. All the Smoke, what they've built is amazing. You gotta take your hat off to All the Smoke. It's also not just a basketball podcast, but make no mistake about it, Stack and Matt Barnes are basketball players. Once you're a basketball player, you always are, but they've ventured off and— Yeah. Built amazing what they're doing in boxing. So you gotta take your hat off, tip the cap to the OGs of All the Smoke. And then lastly, I think with what Mind the Game brings, number one, you got LeBron James and Steve Nash talking basketball. Hard to beat that. Hard to get a better tutoring session than that. Hard to get better stories than that. So I think that's incredible. So I would say those are my top 3. Paul George, somebody mentioned Paul George. And I must say, I love Podcast P. I love that Podcast P got into the podcast space. I love that Podcast P finally showed the world his personality and who P is. I've known P for years now, and I think the first time the world really got to see who P is was through his podcast. So I love that. But I can't put P in my top 3 no more because as someone who went through a podcast and won a championship and took a beating for it all year, like you can't quit, P. So when the times get rough, you can't gracefully bow out, P. You gotta keep pushing through the rough times because this is what we do. You know, like we podcast too. You can't like— Yeah. You can't take the break when the times get rough like that, P. And so that was a little disappointing for me from Podcast P. I think great show, but put P on the top 3 and you gracefully bowed out, P, I don't really know about that one. That one hurt my feelings a little bit, but definitely a great show. Next up, we got our Golden Days segment. There's been incredible— incredible support and gratitude for the Golden Days segment. We received so many emails in the past few days. I'm so glad you guys love this segment. Like I said, it brings, it takes me back to these moments and allow me to relive these moments, which is fun for me because I'm still playing. So you don't really relive these moments much because you're still going through it and you're trying to make another one. So you guys give me a few minutes to relive these moments and I appreciate it. Reminder, you can send in your moments and memories to draymondgreen@audacy.com. For the sake of time, please keep these emails to a few sentences. It'll make the selection much easier. I will do two of them today. The first comes from Timothy in San Diego. Can you recap the night Klay hit 14 threes in a game? As a teammate, what do you say to not jinx him or not have a player who's hot overthink what they are doing? Well, Steve calling plays to get Klay open and push to break the record. What does it say about Steph as a leader and a teammate that he kept feeding and celebrating Klay breaking his record? So what I will say about that moment is the time Steph hit the 13 threes, from that moment on, Klay was like, "I'm gonna break the record. I'm gonna break the record." And they kept talking about it. And Klay got to like 11, he got to 12, he got to 10. And it was just a constant conversation. And he kept saying, "I'm gonna break the record." I'm gonna break the record. And he hit 14 threes. We got subbed out really early because we was beating the shit outta the Bulls. I do remember that. We were playing in Chicago. Klay had on that dumbass headband and we were beating the crap outta the Bulls. We subbed out early because as you know, those teams used to beat the mess outta everybody. But what I loved most about that team, whether it was Kevin, Steph, when somebody was on the verge of doing something special, everybody was all in. We used to get in trouble by Steve because we see one of the guys get hot, whether it's Steph, Draymond Green, Klay, K, and like all of us just trying any way possible to get him the ball. We start turning the ball over trying to get you the ball and Steve be like, "Yo, what the hell are y'all doing?" He's going crazy. And we're like, "Well, we gonna get him the ball and we gonna win the game. We'll be fine." And so that's kind of how we lived through that. Like we, everybody was in on those moments. And Steph, Steph being who he is, he's number one guy trying to pass Klay the ball, which is what made this thing so special. It's what honestly made this thing what it is. Just that demeanor, that type of gratitude for your brothers. And you know, we knew he was getting close to the record. So from that point on, we was just throwing him the ball. Everybody screening for Klay, just running down the court, everybody looking for a screen for Klay. And he broke the record. And it was so like, I think the most incredible thing to me about it was that's like, For instance, we haven't seen anybody touch Klay's record yet. Like, it wasn't like he quietly did it. Like, he made it known all through, like, "I'mma break that record." And he kept talking about it. To like actually say that, that hard-ass record to break and actually go do it within a year or two, not even. I take my hat off to Klay. And that's what shows me, you know, that's just another, that's just another example of how much of a dog Klay Thompson really is. Like, he said, "I'mma go do this," and went and did it. So, you know, I know a lot of people try to discredit Klay. Klay is arguably greatest, one of the greatest shooters to ever play this game. Not arguably, he is one of the greatest shooters to ever play this game. And if Klay Thompson never gets hurt, he's arguably top 2 shooters to ever play this game. So stop the Klay Thompson slander. We're not here for it. Never gonna be here for it. Special player, special competitor. I'm thankful to call him my brother. The second comes from Andy. Please go back to the parade post-2015 championship where you said, "We won, yup. They suck, yup." I think a lot of young hoopers don't know about that iconic moment. Man, that moment was so fun. Number one, so if you know anything about these parades, especially us on the West Coast, we have to get to the, to the facility at like 7 o'clock in the morning. You're obviously partying for several days on in, drinking all night, and then you gotta get up and you gotta power through. Like, it's 7 o'clock in the morning, it's a parade, like you gotta be hype. So, you know, me back in that day, 25 years old, I faced the fifth of Hennessy and I was toe up. And then I did the interview with Roz and— Roz. At the time, for you young people out there, go look up E-40 song, "Yup." And E-40 had a Warriors Dubs, "Yup," version too. So that song popping, 40 Water, the whole, "Yup, it's popping." And I go in the interview and I was feeling it. And I just made up my own rendition of, "Yup." And it was great. And it was one of the highlights of the parade. And I was drunk and I am extremely proud of it. That was a fun moment. That's one of the moments I remember.
