And, you know, I think our team has been playing really well. Uh, I think You know, we were kind of due for one of those games. Can't hit a shot, can't quite get anything right. Second night of a back-to-back, 24 hours removed from Jimmy Butler's season-ending ACL injury. Yeah, so you couple all of that together or triple all of that together and you get, kind of the game we had last night. I was really pleased with the way we fought regardless of the circumstances. You know, continued to stay in the game, kept making it a game. That second unit that was in there, Buddy Hill played a great game. Always stand ready. JK, which we'll get a little more into, played a damn good game as well. But we'll get more into that. But anyway. Yeah. The Toronto Raptors went 21 for 34 from 3, 20 for 20 from the free throw line, and they shot 60% from the field. It's tough to win like that. They felt, it felt like they hit everything and they did hit everything. And so, you know, bouncing back 24 hours later after, you know, what happened with Jimmy, it's just tough in itself. You know, you're going into the game, You're wondering how this is gonna work, what it's gonna look like, just emotionally drained. You lose a teammate like that, especially someone as important as Jimmy is to us, it's just emotionally taxing. You know, you spend the night talking to everybody, trying to make sure he's okay, waiting on the results, getting the results, and it not being great at all. Yeah. Jimmy was in the locker room with us yesterday. It was great to see him, but yet hard in itself to see him. You know, you look across the locker room and all of a sudden he not there. And just like that, right? Like finally getting the rotations down, second unit with Jimmy playing incredible. Like just starting to catch that flow and boom, that's how fast it changes. Yeah. That is a message to young people out there. That is a message to old people out there. That is a message to NBA players out there and everything in between. That is how fast it changes. Whatever your thing is, that is how fast it changes, right? Like you get everybody healthy, you're like, man, we finally got our team healthy, we're rolling. And then boom, it changes. That's how fast it goes. No matter what your thing is. So I think number one and most importantly, always keeping that mindset, always understanding, always being appreciative for the opportunity for great health because it changes fast. Mm-hmm. In saying that, I wish my brother Jimmy a speedy recovery. First thing he said sitting in the locker room is like, "Man, I'm supposed to take my kids to the arcade in the morning. I'm not gonna be able to take my—" He said it 4 different times. "I'm not gonna be able to take my kids to the arcade in the morning." Then we talked a little more. "Man, I'm supposed to take my kids to the arcade." That's all he kept saying. And he was just in like this state of like delirium, like completely delirious. And I can only imagine what he felt, but he just kept saying, "Man, I'm supposed to take my kids to the arcade." And I always speak about when people had these injuries, what everyone doesn't understand is like, you live that every day. Like it don't, it's not the video game, you just hurt on the court. And then you walk away from the court and life's fine. No, like you live that injury every single day. That's what we give to this game. It's your health, right? So like, we don't get much time anyway, free to do things like that. You know, you miss time with your kids, you miss time with your family. Yeah. And then like for that to happen, like that's a big, big deal. Like that alters not only them going to the arcade with his kids, but that alters their summer, that alters their All-Star break. It alters so much. It alters life as they know it. So I'm wishing Jimmy a speedy recovery. Mm-hmm. 'Cause it sucks. Like, you talking about a guy who puts so much into it. And like, for that to happen, it leaves us in a state of like, what direction do you turn as a team? I just saw something on Instagram that said, "Is Jimmy and Steph gonna be the— the Jimmy and Steph duo gonna be one of the biggest what-ifs?" And I was like, "Huh, why is that?" And I thought about it like, oh, Steph got hurt in the playoffs last year. Now Jimmy ACL. Where does the team go from here? I think that's the question that everyone has. I think that's the biggest question around. It's like, what do you do from here? Do you make a trade? Do you— and you know, I saw some reports yesterday, like the Dubs will look to trade Jimmy. Like, stop. No one in our organization is moving that fast. It's just not how it works. There's a human element to this organization that is always weighed in. No one in this organization is moving that fast. Just not how we operate. So people coming out like, "Oh man, they're looking to trade Jimmy." Like, you have these, I wanna call 'em reporters, but you can't necessarily. I won't use that term so loosely because there's a lot of reporters that I respect. And that does this job with integrity, that does this job, they do the work and I respect them. So I won't call them reporters. But you have so many of these talking people. I won't even call them talking heads because they haven't even really done the work to be considered talking heads. But just these people that talk, that come up with these things that then put their name by it and they put their name next to the wildest thing they can say so you remember their name, but you don't know who they are. Yeah. Just to get on, like it's so nasty in the landscape today. Social media has given everybody a voice and people just report shit that's not real. And so, you know, that's whack to me. But in saying that, you do have to wonder like, all right, what direction does the team go? You know, is that some trade, is that, Like, there's one thing I do know is this team is always gonna do right by Steph. This organization will always do right by him. They'll always try to give him the best chance at success because he's earned that. And so they'll always do right by him, which is why willing to take the swing and go and get Jimmy, which was very much so a success. Yeah. Up until this point. So what I do know is the team will always look to improve and get better. What form does that come in? I read just like you all do. I don't, you know, sometimes we hear about like trade stuff, like when it's right there, it's not like you're working with the general manager or, the front office group. No, we're trying to do our day job. But, you know, all the trade chatter and all this leads to Jonathan Kuminga. 16 straight DNPs, plays last night, obviously with the injury to Jimmy, and had a really, really good second half. Put some pressure on the rim, showing that athleticism that we always miss. I threw JK a lot. In the first half and it was a little off and he almost caught it, missed it, but it was my fault. And I was like, man, JK, my bad. Like, I owe you one. I haven't had a lob threat like that in like 2 months. So I gotta get my timing right on it, but I'm gonna get you. I owe you one. And that's why we were laughing when I got the lob to him in the second half. We were laughing. I'm like, I told you I got you. I told you I'm gonna get it. Like— Yeah. Just figuring that timing out. You know, all those things is happening on the fly and it's happening fast. And so that was a fun moment to have that moment with him after, you know, not being able to share the court with him for a while. And then, you know, just like it's been all the time he's been here is, you know, me tossing lobs to him. That's always fun. I love to have that option as a lob threat. He put incredible pressure on the rim. Was flying around. It was beautiful to see. And it was also beautiful to see because all you've heard from everyone in this organization was how he's been staying ready, how he's been putting the work in. And I know people tend to think sometimes like people are just bullshitting and saving face, but you don't have that game he had last night if you haven't been in the gym, if you haven't been doing the work. Yeah. And he's been doing the work. And so I applaud him, but also I am happy for him because, man, sometimes life just throws shit at you that you got no control over. And most people pow, most people sulk, most people let go of the rope. He didn't let go of the rope. But that's also a young kid from Congo that if you knew his story, you'd understand why he didn't let go of the rope. Mm-hmm. And me having the honor and pleasure to know his story, I understand and know why he didn't let go of the rope because letting go of the rope ain't an option. It's not an option. And so I love and respect that regardless of that though, stuff sometimes gets so hard and he continued to push through it and had a great game last night. And for the foreseeable future, I don't see him not playing. Yeah. Like, so he'll have more opportunity, you know? And with that opportunity, I think he'll deliver because he's done the work and he stayed ready for the opportunity. You know, so I give credit to JK. I also give credit to Steve. You don't play someone for 16 games in a row, you can't just throw them in the game. You have to have a conversation. You have to know the right thing to say, how to say it, how to make sure that guy is on board, how to get the best outta that player. I give credit to Steve as well, because that mean you had to do some work behind the scenes. And I know people think we just roll the basketballs out and go play. There's so much work done behind the scenes, so much more that goes into it. And so I give Steve credit on how he handled it. Yeah. I don't know exactly how he handled it, but I know the work that has to be done. I've been in this for 14 years. You can't just throw that guy in the game like, oh, JK, here you go. That requires an uncomfortable conversation. That's then JK opportunity to say something. He got it like that. That requires everyone to get uncomfortable. And you can tell Steve was willing to get uncomfortable also by how Jonathan Kaminga responded. Because he could have not responded at all and just been like, "Ah, fuck you." And I think everybody would've understood if he did that. Except he didn't, because that's not who he is. And so I give credit to both of those guys and how they handled it and, you know, coming out and what that moment meant last night and what it means moving forward. Looking forward to also sharing the floor with J.K. And seeing and using that athleticism and how it can help our, how it can and will help our team. Also on the J.K. front, Mike, our general manager, Dunleavy, went viral for his comments on J.K.'s trade demand. He said, "I'm aware of that. In terms of demands, when you make a demand, there needs to be demand in the market." When I first read the quote, I was like, "Hmm, that's spicy." And then when you actually watch the clip, You're like, oh, I get what he was saying. He's answering the question about, yes, I know they've made a trade demand, but there has to be demand. In order for there to be demand, we gotta scour the market. We're gonna search the market and see what demand there is there. And that's a fact. You know, so oftentimes in today's day and age, we just read the quote and like, oh man, this guy did that. As soon as I got home, one of my friends said it to me like, Man, Mike wrong. He shouldn't did that. He shouldn't have did that. I'm like, what you talking about? He's like, I read the quote. And I'm like, I read the quote too. And then I saw the quote and I was like, uh, not quite what you thought. But also I think, you know, I think one thing is that people tend to forget about this is this is a business. Yeah. And so in business, there's negotiation. It's a huge part of a general manager and an agent's job is negotiations. And when having negotiations, sometimes they get tense. There's things that's said in negotiation that the public don't know, that we don't know, I don't know. That's just the nature of negotiations. And with that, There's some things that said, there's shots taken, there's all of that. There's shots from the agent more so than the general manager, 'cause general managers aren't really allowed to talk about negotiations. Agents are. General managers really can't. Now they can go up to a certain point, but they can't. So I'm sure there were some things said in negotiation, all of that, like that, could also be a part of the response. I think you have to take all of that into account, right? Like, I also think you have to take into account things like when general managers speak, general managers don't speak to players. They speak to like a player, like, what's up? They check in, they, you got a problem? They are, but they're over everything. Yeah. Coaches more so speak to players. So when you see quotes from general managers, they're oftentimes not really talking to players. They're only really talking to players when things go bad. Who general managers are usually talking to is representation, is other people around the market, other general managers, front office members. Yeah. When general managers make quotes, that's who they're usually speaking to. So that's what I'll say about this situation. And also to my friend who was like, oh man, he wrong. Cause general managers aren't usually speaking to players. And in this case, I don't believe the general manager was speaking to the player. So that's just my take on that. After the break, I'll go around the association, hit on the biggest stories, including the explosive Virginia Bus LeBron report. The Knicks' January collapse and Jeff Teague's fantasy work. I'll be right back after this. I'll be honest, healthy habits have never been more important. So this year I actually found a routine that's much easier to stick to. Grooms. That's code Draymond at Grooms.co. As promised, we gonna move around the association now. And according to ESPN, prior to selling the team, former Lakers owner Jeanie Buss grew disappointed LeBron. They said she grumbled about LeBron's outsized ego, felt Clutch exerted too much control, didn't like how LeBron was considered a savior, lack of accountability over the Westbrook trade, privately mused about not giving him a contract extension and trading him to the Clippers, felt LeBron was not grateful the Lakers drafted Bronny and begrudgingly gave him a contract extension. Fearing a bad PR hit. That's a lot. There was also more in there from family about what's gone wrong in the family and this, that, and the other. So what do I make of this article? Number one, I make of this article that someone in the Buss family is very pissed off at Jeanie. Probably didn't agree with the sale. Probably didn't have much control over it. And this is their way of getting back. That's what this reads to me. Could Jeannie have had some problems with LeBron? I'm sure. It's the nature of this business. I'm sure she had some issues. Is it all of these things? What I make of this is someone in the family is trying to— Draymond Green. Stick it to Jeannie. And the way of doing that is saying, I'm gonna attack her relationship with LeBron. I'm gonna say things that she said about LeBron that then she has to deal with. Make Jeannie have to deal with something in a manner that she may not have wanted to deal with. And that's kind of what I take away from this. Felt Clutch exerted too much control. In this business, a lot of the top agents, especially agents of the top players, usually have some say over what goes on the team. That's the nature of the business because you're trying to appease to the player because ultimately you always want that player to wanna stay. So you want them to feel heard. You wanna take, and when you have star players, you also wanna take their consideration into account. Who they wanna play with, who they don't wanna play with. That all matters in building a team. And so that's standard practice. When you throw the word exerted too much control, that's usually attached to Klutch's name because there's always shots at Rich and this, that, and the other. So that's usually attached to the name. But great top agents work to have some sort of control.— but usually negatively attached to clutch when it's clutch and rich. So that's to be expected. Lack of accountability over the Westbrook trade. I don't know much about that. I don't know how much Bron said, yo, we need to go get Russ. I'm sure he had to approve it. I'm sure maybe he did mention it, maybe he didn't. Lack of accountability over it. Ultimately, teams have to make decisions and have to make moves. I think for me personally, I would have loved to see more people come out and say, yo, it just didn't work. Whether that's LeBron, whether that's the Lakers front office, whether that's whoever. Draymond Green. I would've loved to see more people say, yo, it just didn't work. But that wasn't the case. And I said it during the time, I feel like Russ during that time was one of the scapegoats. And in saying that, to point the blame solely at a player and say, yo, he didn't take responsibility. He didn't take accountability. I don't know if I could just roll with that because I know they'll say no in a heartbeat to anything. Like, everything's not a yes. So I don't know that I buy that we're just gonna throw that to a player. I just, I don't really buy that, that side of it. Trading Bron to the Clippers, I don't buy that either. You're not sending LeBron James right up the street to the Los Angeles Clippers. Maybe the Clippers called, I don't know. But you're not just sending LeBron James up the street to the Clippers. I don't buy that. Felt LeBron was not grateful the Lakers drafted Bronny. Do you bow down and like kiss the ring? Say thank you, you're appreciative. I've seen Bron speak out about how he's appreciative to the organization. Give Bronny a chance. But also Bronny did do some work. Like Bronny worked to become who he's become as well. It's not like this kid didn't, wasn't a top recruit and didn't play at a top college. Like give Bronny some credit as well. He worked. Like does LeBron being with the Lakers help Bronny get drafted there? Of course. But I spoke about this before too. But don't tell me the owner's son that's a general manager or something else, don't help. When you're in great positions and you've put in work, it helps. That's just the reality. That's the world we live in. If you haven't benefited from that, it's unfortunate. Maybe you'll do the work so your kid benefits from it. And then says, "Begrudgingly gave him a contract extension, fearing a bad PR hit." That could be true. Because you— it's still LeBron James. Like, you don't— You don't want that stain on your record because people gonna see how you treated LeBron James and then do they wanna be a Laker? So that could be true, but that's also a negotiation tactic. That's how this league works. So I thought it was interesting. Like I said, I think it was a way of a family member to possibly stick it to Jeannie and put something on her plate that she has to deal with. But I don't know, I don't live in the Lakers locker room. So that's my take. Jeff T says, "If you flip Luka and LeBron age, the Lakers would be the best team ever." That is an incredible fantasy world. I wish I could flip my age with someone. But I get what he's saying. You know, I guess. I don't. I mean, I get the basic part of it, but I'm trying to figure out what Jeff was getting at. You flip Luka and LeBron age, that makes Luka LeBron, that makes LeBron Luka. I don't know. Best team ever though is the Golden State Warriors. So I still don't think that team would've been better than the Golden State Warriors. And you know which ones I'm talking about. Yeah. So yeah, I disagree. Also around the association, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne reports people within the Knicks aren't happy that Mike Brown hugged Draymond Green after a game in which Draymond committed a flagrant foul on Karl-Anthony Towns. So, this is soft because was it really a flagrant foul? Like, I didn't— Yeah. Take the guy out. Like we've seen some flaggers that's like, you know, that was like, "Ah, it's Draymond." Because the game right before that, we played the Milwaukee Bucks and Gary Trent did that very thing to Steph Curry and they reviewed it and called a common foul. So like, I play by a different set of rules. We all know, and it's okay. It is what it is. Probably deserved. Oh well, is what it is. So I got a flagrant foul, but was it really a real flagrant foul? If it was, oh well, I don't care because like I told y'all, there was body-to-body contact, nothing was called. I think something should have been called, either a foul or a charge, which I thought it was a charge, but either or, doesn't really matter. What's not about to happen is body-to-body contact, I go down and he dunk the ball, and then he turned— No, that's not how this works. I'm a big man, you stand your ground, and you not— that's not happening. So there's that. But in saying that, let's get back to the point. They're mad that Mike Brown hugged me after a game where I committed a foul on Karl-Anthony Towns. Number one, this is basketball, you gonna get fouled. Number two, it wasn't a hard foul. And if it was a hard foul, Karl-Anthony Towns should've got up and defended himself. He didn't because it wasn't a hard foul. Or he didn't because maybe for other reasons. Nonetheless, he didn't. And for all the tough guys who wanna get mad at Mike, as they say, none of them did. So I don't get it. Mike Brown and I won multiple championships together. And we collaborated a lot. That relationship is what it is. It ain't changing because it's built. That's not an inherited relationship. That's two human beings that took time to build that relationship. Mike Brown was at my wedding. He was at my wedding when I got married. Now granted, we had an all-Black policy, And Mike Brown and his significant other came in in like baby blue and orange. But that's my dog. And he was at my wedding. Should he not hug me? By the way, if they're mad at the endgame hug, I was talking to the referee about the call. And Mike said, and then I said something, Mike said, "You ain't gonna speak?" It wasn't like a playful, like, "Oh, you ain't speakin'?" It was like, He literally was like, "Damn, man, you ain't gonna speak?" Almost, it felt like, it sounded like almost a little hurt. Like, "Damn." Which is why I turned around and hugged him. Like, "I'm sorry, Mike B." He didn't hug me back. I hugged him. Because in the moment I'm like, "Fuck." Like, how did I not? I meant to actually say, "What's up to Mike B?" That's my guy. That's my guy. So I meant to actually say, "What's up?" And then he said, and I just turned around. I'm sorry, Mike B. I hugged him. Yeah, he didn't hug me back. I hugged him and I went on. But if these guys are gonna try to point to that and say, man, that's why we were 2-8 in January. Number one, that was like one of the last games that they played in January. So I think that game actually made them 2-7 in January. So what about the other 5 losses? Well, was that about a hug too? Or are people just trying to grab onto something to point to something easy and say, oh, it's this, and not face the real issues? The real issues that I've been telling y'all for years now. You just gotta face the real issues. As players, you gotta face the real issues. So, I wasn't in their meeting, but I've heard this now several times, and I say it's ridiculous. And if those guys ever have the opportunity to win a championship, they'll realize those relationships hit different because you went through some shit to come out on top on the other side. Those relationships don't really fade. They hit different. So I hope those guys one day had an opportunity to win a championship, and then I want them to come back to this report and be like, yo, I get it. I get why they hugged. Them relationships hit different because you went through some shit together and you came out of it on the other side on top. If they're ever, ever able to do that, They'll understand more. But if this is an issue, they'll never understand. Because I told y'all, Kat told me I was a front-runner, which was funny. This is front-running shit. That's front-running stuff right there. So I'm gonna say, I hope that that's not true. And I'm like, I see people like, oh man, the front office is gonna have to fire him. If they're gonna have to fire him over that, everybody need to be wiped out because you'll never win like that. If this is the issue, if this is the issue, you'll never win like that. By the way, no one on their team, I have some friends on their team, by the way, guys that I rock with. So not even, not speaking to the guys I rock with, but nobody on their team tried to fight, tried to do anything. So for this report to come out, if this is the case, that says more about them than anything. And that will say why they're 2-8 in January. So there's that. If that's your issue, phew, you got a much bigger issue. But it could be because Draymond Green's involved, and you know everybody love to hate. Which I love, but that's the issue? Nothing happened to me. Nobody confront nothing. You got a much bigger issue. If you're short on time but still want a gift that actually feels personal, listen up. Jenny Bird is the shortcut. Honestly, it doesn't get easier than this, and she'll notice the thought behind it. Pelle Larsson been in the mix a bit this week. Got into it with Book, then got into it with DeMar. My take on that is, you know, I've played a bunch of Europeans. They do little dirty stuff. It's a difference. See, people get mad at me and be like, "Oh, Draymond dirty." I told y'all, Draymond not dirty. Draymond will fuck you up. I'm not dirty. I don't do dirty things. I played for Tom Izzo, and if you did dirty things, it doesn't work. I don't do dirty things. There's not a player in the NBA that can tell you Draymond's a dirty player. Don't do it. Europeans though, there's a lot of Europeans that play, they do dirty stuff on the basketball court. And for D-Book and DeMar to get mad like that, He's doing something that we ain't see. To his credit, you got a tech on D-Book, you got DeMar thrown out. But if you gonna keep doing that, you gotta stay on that because people gonna then start going at you. And that comes with a reputation and that's a whole different thing. So I don't know Pelle Larson to be that guy. However, I don't know much about Pelle Larson. If that's who he's gonna be, commit to it and stay there because guys gonna start going at you like that. Yeah. It's just what comes with it. And before we get outta here, the NBA Key Rookie Ladder Rookie of the Year rankings goes as follows. Number 1, Con Kanuppo. Number 2, Cooper Flagg. 3, Vijay Ejokon. 4, Draymond Green. 5, Cedric Howard. I am A-okay with this. Con Kanuppo has definitely been a Rookie of the Year. I think Cooper Flagg has picked it up as of over the last 2 months. He's really been playing a lot better and he should be right where he is. DJ started off great, hit a little slump and came back out of it playing great. Deserves to be there. Derrick Queen didn't play much initially. Since he's been playing, he's been balling. You can see why they made the trade. Understand that. And then Cedric Howard has been consistent all year playing good basketball. I think this is an incredible rookie ladder ranking, but I also think this is incredible rookie class. I do expect Kyle Kuzma to finish and finish the job and win Rookie of the Year. He's shooting the piss out the ball. I spoke to y'all about him after we played him a week, couple weeks ago. A lot of size that I didn't know he had, shoots the lights out the ball, better ball handler, just overall better basketball player than I knew. I didn't have the opportunity to see him play much before, but man, kid can really hoop. And I think he will close the deal. He'll get the opportunity. He'll get all the chances there in Charlotte, barring that he stays healthy, knock on wood, always praying for good health for guys. I think he will end up being Rookie of the Year and it'll be well deserved. That kid got game. And unless Cooper just starts doing crazy things, I think Khan is gonna stay consistent and he'll consistently stay at number 1, in my opinion. But love this rookie class. This has an opportunity. Yeah. To be one of the better ones we've seen over the last 20 years. Obviously they're rookies. Some rookies make the Rookie All-Star Game and then fall off like a bad bag of dope. That's just what happens. We'll have to see as this, how this plays out, as it plays out. But right now this rookie class look like it's a good one. We shall see. Wanna thank y'all again for tuning in to the Draymond Green Show. We're starting our road trip here in Dallas with the Mavericks and then onto the Timberwolves. Before ultimately ending in Utah. Talk to y'all soon. These are some big, big games and we need to figure it out without Jimmy and what this is gonna look like. Until next time, deuces.
