Warriors slumping, Dray’s $25K fine & LeBron posterizes Kevin Love | The Draymond Green Show

In this 18th episode of The Draymond Green Show, host Draymond Green opens with a tribute to LeBron James, noting his recent passing of Karl Malone on the all‑time scoring list and reflecting on the GOAT debate. He then introduces All‑Star Bradley Beal as the episode’s guest, previewing discussion about Beal’s wrist injury, upcoming player option, and free‑agency outlook, while drawing a parallel between the NFL’s off‑season activity and the NBA’s upcoming player movement. Green shifts to the Golden State Warriors, candidly admitting personal responsibility for the team’s three‑game losing streak, emphasizing the need for physicality and mental toughness, and critiquing the notion that star players like Stephen Curry can rescue the team. He details his recent $25,000 fine stemming from a technical foul in the NBA Finals, explains the financial impact (or lack thereof) of the fine, and lambasts the NBA’s appeal process as illogical. Throughout, Green’s tone oscillates between conversational, self‑critical, and reverent, offering insight into his leadership mindset, views on league discipline, and admiration for LeBron’s career achievements.

Hi, it's Colin Cowherd. I started The Volume to bring you some of the most authentic voices in sports. While you're here, make sure you hit subscribe. Thanks. What's up, everybody? Welcome back to the Draymond Green Show. This is our 18th episode. That's right. We have as many episodes as LeBron James has All-Star appearances, which is incredible. Especially speaking of what he's been doing as of late, which we'll get into. But before we get into that, we have another all-star guest, which like I said, we kind of making it a thing of having all-stars and Hall of Famers. I don't know, it's pretty great. So I am, number one, from myself, from my producer Jackson, we wanna say thank you to all the guests. Thank you. That have come on the show up until this point. It's been incredible. Each episode is special in its own right. You're getting something different from each episode. At least that's what I hope because I'm getting something different from each episode. And like I always say, I enjoy these conversations just as much as I hope our listeners enjoy the conversations. I learn from them. I think it's, for me, it's always good to see in someone else's psyche and see what other guys are thinking and how they're thinking. So today we will have the pleasure pleasure of having All-Star Bradley Beal coming on today. He's obviously had a stoppage in this season due to injury coming off of wrist surgery. But more importantly, in my opinion, one of the most underrated guys in the NBA. Like if you look at Bradley Beal and what he's done in his career, if I'm not mistaken, actually I am not mistaken, I am certain he's a 3-time All-Star. Yeah. If you know anything about basketball, Bradley Beal's in his 10th year, you'd think Bradley Beal has way more All-Star appearances than 3. And so that's why I say he's one of the most underrated players in my opinion. If you play against him, you know you getting a bucket, however he can give it to you, however you want it, Brad Beal give you that. Off the dribble, off the catch and shoot, off a pin down, in the post. To the cup, he's giving you that. So I'm excited to have Brad Bill on. Obviously, you know, he has a player option coming up this summer. So we'll talk a little free agency. We'll talk what he's seeing and thinking for his future. As we all know, that's important. And I mean, do you see the movement that's going on in the NFL? If the NFL never has movement in their off season ever, like guys getting traded left and right. That it never happens. So that has to be lining us up for a great NBA offseason because there's always movement. NBA offseason is a thing. I think this is great for the NFL, by the way, to have this movement and exciting. Like it's the first time that the NFL has gone into the offseason and like gave us something to talk about for real. Like you, you know, you see signings here and there, but it's just not as much movement. And so to see these guys on the move like this and all the reshuffling going on in that league, I think I think is incredible. And so, you know, as we're seeing that, we'll get a chance to hear what Brad Bill is thinking for his off-season coming up and how he's preparing for free agency, how he's embracing it. We'll get to hear all that good stuff. So, but before we get to that, as you know, we gotta go around the association starting with the Warriors, our team, my team, 3-game slump. Number 1, until Jackson told me, I didn't even notice we're in a 3-game slump because the reality is at this point in the season, I could care less about whether we win or lose a game because ultimately this is about preparing yourself and getting ready for the playoffs and the stretch run. So I had no idea we actually had lost 3 in a row. In saying that, I think as you may have heard in my press conference after the Orlando Magic game, I think, you know, a large part of that is us getting punked and— Yeah. You know, I said that, I said that to my teammates. I'm not afraid to say that. And what I didn't say, and the reality is, is that falls on me. That's my category. That's where I excel. That's where I lead. I have to be better at that. I can't let that happen. So that falls on me. I know someone asked me last night, like, well, you know, would that be different if Steph Curry is in the game? And the answer is no, it wouldn't be because that's not Steph Curry's duty. So if I'm, If I failed at that currently, no matter who's on the floor, Steph Curry's not coming to make us tougher. That's not what Steph does. That's not what I'm ever going to allow Steph to do. That's not Steph's role. So that falls on me regardless of who on the floor. You can't be out toughed. Like you gotta be tough. You gotta meet the level of physicality. And like I said, the playoffs are coming up. So meeting the level of physicality is more important than any— more important than anything. Being mentally strong is more important than anything. And I think that's two areas that our team has been lacking in and we need to pick it back up. We've shown that we can be good in those areas. And I think it's very important that, you know, heading into mid-April that we get that back. And like I said, that's on me. I'll make sure we get that back. So that's— Yeah. You know, and I think that leads to other things, right? Like that leads to the turnovers, that leads to the missed shots. Like that leads to going 8 minutes and scoring 2 points or whatever it was like that. All of those things are byproduct of just being out toughed and another team being more physical than you. So I'll take that on the chin. That's on me. Everybody talked about, oh, Draymond, get back. It'll change a lot of things. It hasn't. The reality is, is I know it can change things. It should change things. So I will change things. So that's where I am as far as our 3-game slump go. Obviously, you know, yesterday it was released that I was fined $25,000. At this point, I really don't care about the fine or whatever. Like I got suspended from Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Like that was the absolute worst thing you could do to me. The last thing I care about. And I got fined for that. I'm not sure if I've told this story before, but I got fined for that. Getting suspended from Game 5 of the Finals. Now mind you, you're not paid for the playoffs, just so you guys know. Like, say on average for a guy who's on a max contract, on your per game, per salary, I mean your per game salary, or game check, let's go roughly $200 grand. Okay. Could be a little higher, could be a little lower, but just go $200 grand for an even number to give you some perspective. If you win NBA Finals, I think your bonus is like $330 grand or something like that, which is a lot of money. Don't get me wrong. But in comparison to playing one game and making $200 grand, it's not. A lot of money because that's 7, that's at least 16. If you sweep the playoffs, that's 16 extra games. So you do the math. It doesn't add up. I was actually fined a game check for missing a game that I actually don't get paid to play in. So I think if I'm not mistaken, that fine at the time for me was like $156,000 or something like that. Mm-hmm. And so, To be fined is $25,000. It's like the worst thing that you can do to me, you've already done. Like, so I really don't give a damn. Especially when I can go home at night and sleep and know that ultimately I got a tech for saying, "Come on," and walking the other way saying, "Come on." And then I received a second technical foul for saying, "Come on, Murad, you know that was terrible." No profanity. No, none of that. But then it's put out that, oh, Draymond had a profanity-laced thing with the official and he's fined $25,000. But let's talk about the 2 technical fouls that I use absolutely no profanity to receive. So I don't know, I don't understand. I don't really get off into it. I really don't appeal technical fouls anymore, um, or none of the fines or anything, because you're appealing to the same person that gave you define, like you're appealing to them. So you're not gonna listen to the interview a second time or watch the thing a second time and be like, "Ah, you know what? I'ma change that." Like that don't make sense to me. It's actually one of the most backwards processes that I can even think of. I mean, you think, you know, if you go to court and you get a judgment from the judge, and then you appeal that, you don't go back to the same judge and ask that judge again, "Hey, um, you think you wanna change your mind on what you already decided?" Like, you just don't do that. So I've never understood that process. Because I don't understand the process, I just don't bother to waste my time anymore. It is what it is. Like, it comes with the territory. Like I told them, Probably not. It's 1,000% not the first time that I've been fined. As I think at this point now, I've probably been fined over north of $1 million in my career or somewhere close. It's definitely not the first time I've been fined. And I'm almost certain it won't be the last. So it is what it is. I am me. I'm not changing that for anybody. I'm always gonna be me. You take it or leave it. It's gotten me this far. It'll get me much further. So not tripping on that. And we gotta talk about one of the GOATs, my big brother LeBron James passing Karl Malone on the scoring list for number 2 all time. Absolutely insane. You know why it's so insane? Because no one even considers LeBron James a scorer. That's what I think is extremely impressive. Is this guy isn't even considered a scorer, yet he's sitting at number 2 all time. And it's only a matter of time before he passed Kareem. Absolutely insane. And then he followed that up going back to Cleveland, 38, 12, and 11. And oh my God, K-Love. By the way, we gotta have K-Love on the show one of these days. But oh my God, K-Love. K-Love. Jesus Christ. I think, I think Bron owe you some good wine for that one, my brother. As there's no way, come on now Bron, there's absolutely no way. Like, like Bron, you had enough reaction time to realize like, ah man, that's K-Love. Like I'm, I'm not about to do that. Not put your foot in his stomach and climb him and get the extra boost and look at the rim and throw it in there and then What I will say is, if it was me, K-Love, I would've turned around and looked at you and like, "Oh, type of shit." At least Bron looked at crowd. But like I tweeted or I put on Instagram story or something, like 38, 12, and 11, power dunk. Like we knew, we knew this was happening. Like it's no surprise. That LeBron goes back to Cleveland, puts on that show, the Lakers get a win. That was no surprise. If you saw that LeBron was going to Cleveland and that surprised you, shame on you. 'Cause it did not surprise me at all. I mean, Cleveland is having a good year. Shout out to the Draymond Green Show alumnus, Darius Garland. They are having an incredible year. Absolutely love what they're doing, but it's LeBron going back to Cleveland. Like we all know how that goes. So I mean, that really just capped an incredible week for Bron, you know, and what he's been able to accomplish, man. I mean, I take my hat off to that brother as someone who's had battles with him, who's played in finals against him. And really understand, you know, his process and what he does and how hard it is to beat him and how incredible he is. My brother, I take my hat off to you, man. I mean, it still baffles me that as much love as you get, you still don't get the love that you deserve. And I guess that's a part of it, they say. Yeah. But as a brother, but even more importantly than a brother in this situation, as a competitor, as someone who's gone up against you now for the last 10 years, hats off to you, bro. And nobody else ain't gonna give you your flowers, my man. I give you all the flowers in the world 'cause you deserve 'em, bro, from what you've done, for the game of basketball, for the African American community, for us as basketball players and the freedom that you've taken hits for and helping everyone else get to where we are today. I take my hat off to you, bro. The chosen one had that tattoo, I don't know, since high school that I know of. Like to actually come in the NBA with all of that hype, —And like, not only like, you didn't live up to the hype. You know what I'm saying? Like most people don't live up to the hype. And to come into the NBA as the most hyped basketball player of all time and to exceed the hype, to exceed what they thought you were gonna do and they thought you would be one of the best, to exceed that is absolutely incredible. And the way you exceeded it is as, As incredible as it is as a basketball player that you are, you've exceeded that in business. You've exceeded that in, like I said, changing the way we operate in this business. You've achieved that by your entire team, your entire family, y'all, like our entire family. Yeah. All winning at the highest level. Like you've achieved so much, bro. And like I said, as a friend, as a brother, as a competitor, I take my hat off to you, bro. 'Cause it ain't never been done like you. And I don't know if in my lifetime it'll ever be done again. So to be able to witness that, it's been incredible, bro. And saying that, still trying to kick y'all ass. Yeah. But no doubt, man. Congrats to LeBron. Second all time, probably in 50 more games or so, 50 or 70 games or so, he'll be first all time. And I can't wait to see that. And I hope Steve Kerr, I'm throwing this out there right now. If LeBron James is passing all time scoring record and we have a game, I'm going to LeBron's game and witness history. So that's what we doing, Coach Kerr. So if, If LeBron, or not if, when LeBron passes Kareem, gets the number 1 all time, does that make him the GOAT? What's he gotta do to be the GOAT? You know, everyone talks about when LeBron passes Kareem, does that make him the GOAT? I don't think him becoming the number 1 scorer makes him any more of the GOAT than he already is. I think what I don't like to get into is like, oh, is LeBron the GOAT over Michael Jordan? No. LeBron is a GOAT and Michael Jordan's a GOAT and they're both incredible and they never played against each other. So how can we ever settle that? Like it's all subjective and I hate that in sports. Like no, no one's running around talking about, well, Google's a better company than Apple or Apple's a better company than Amazon. No, we all just appreciate those companies for what they bring to this world. But yet we get in sports and we get in basketball and it gotta be, LeBron James against Michael Jordan as the GOAT and who's the best. They're both incredible. They're both great. They're both GOATs. So to get into this whole thing of like, is he above this guy or not? No, they both GOATs in their own right. And I appreciate and respect those guys for that. And I don't really wanna get off into who's better or who's not. They both are incredible in different eras. I think you can appreciate— Uh. Particular things about both of their journey, and they're different from each other. You know, you can appreciate how LeBron has been able to do this for 19 seasons. This man is leading the NBA in scoring in his 19th season. You can appreciate my MJ taking off a year and a half or two or whatever it was and coming back and running off 3 more championships. That's incredible. And so when, when talking about the GOAT and which one is Like, man, that's bullshit. Like, I respect both of those guys. I appreciate both of those guys. And at some point I hope this world of basketball catch up and appreciate that as well. Yeah.
