JaVale McGee turned down higher-paying offers to stay with the Warriors on a minimum contract. He says the championship chance, the team's brotherhood, and their road-dinner tradition matter more than money. After playing elsewhere, he still thinks the Warriors treat players best.
You had offers to go elsewhere for a little more money. What made you say, "Nah, I'm not taking that. I'mma come back to the Warriors for a second year and take a minimum again"?
Tasting that championship, man. Seeing what it took, Game 1 to Game 82, to every game in the playoffs, of what it took. The brotherhood that I felt. The energy. The way the Warriors organization treats their players. I had been to 3, 4 teams. The Warriors, by far, still to this day, treat their players the best out of anybody. Just one aspect of the way that the Warriors does dinners on the road. I still haven't seen that. I've been on 4 teams after that, I believe.
We appreciate you, Joe, Peter. For sure. Appreciate those dinners.
Just the aspect of that, to congregate with your teammates, not only your teammates, but your teammates' friends and family, and not worrying about the bill, just this, order whatever you want. We're all just gonna congregate and fellowship and really enjoy. That was one aspect. I'm like, a million more ain't gonna do it for me. I need to do this again. And it worked out.
