3 Signs of False Prophets

A short pastoral teaching by Justin R. Lester (YouTube, Feb 15, 2024) listing three signs of a false prophet: (1) prophecy that arises from the prophet's own imagination/opinion (citing Jeremiah 14:14), (2) prophecies that do not come true (citing Deuteronomy 18:21–22), and (3) prophets who lead people away from Jesus (citing Deuteronomy 13:1–4). The speaker urges viewers to test teachings against Scripture, pray for discernment (1 Peter 2:1–3), and leave churches led by false teachers; he also directly admonishes false preachers to stop misusing their platform.

Are you tired of motivational speakers and you're wondering whether or not the person you're going to church with or the pastor you're watching online is a false prophet? Well, today I want to answer your questions. Here are three signs of a false prophet. Today, let's talk. So here are three signs of a false prophet. But I want to start this off by saying this. Every pastor you don't like or the one that you don't agree with is not a false prophet. Just because you don't like someone doesn't make them a false prophet. But in accordance to Scripture, here are three ways you can spot a false prophet. Number one, if they prophesy, but their prophecy is from their own imagination or their own opinion. And that's in accordance to Jeremiah, chapter 14, verse number 14. Verse number 14. The thing about false prophets, and prophets in general, is that false prophets may claim to speak on behalf of God, but their prophecies originate from their own imagination, not from divine revelation. Their words are very fabricated. They're leading people astray to those who trust them. So I want you to think about things like when people begin to prophesy, they begin to speak on behalf of God, and everything they're saying are things from their past or things that they think about you. If someone is prophesying to you and it's their opinion, it's not prophecy. God is not giving you somebody else's opinion over you. He's always going to reveal to you what he's already said about you. Number two, when what they say doesn't come true. 18 verses 21, 22. False prophets can be identified by their failed predictions. God's true messengers speak with accuracy and precision, whereas false prophets deliver empty promises, undermining the faith of those who believe in their deceptive claims. I remember one time I was at a church service and this prophet got up and said that if you don't give him X amount of dollars, everybody's gonna lose their jobs. And there are people in the room who probably just did not like myself, didn't have the money to give, didn't have the amount of money he requested, and I didn't lose my job immediately knowing that's a false prophet. False prophets live when their prophecies do not come true. So three signs of a false prophet. They prophesy from their own imagination their opinion. Number two, what they say doesn't come true. And number three, and they lead people away from Jesus. It's in accordance with Deuteronomy, chapter 13, verses 1 through 4 false prophets perform signs and wonders to captivate their audience, but their message encourages people turning away from the one true God and one true son, Jesus Christ. And if they do so, they're to be rejected. Let me tell you, any prophet who is speaking on behalf of themselves and not speaking the truth about Jesus are false. So what do you do? Well, in accordance to Scripture, First Peter, chapter two, verse one through three, be careful. Hear the word of the Lord. It says, therefore rid yourselves of all malice and deceit, hypocrisy, envy, slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave spiritual milk that you may grow up in your salvation and you've tasted the Lord is good. What Peter is doing in this text, the writer, First Peter is warning believers to be vigilant against the influence of false prophets by fostering a heart free from malice, deceit and envy. When we are free from those things, we then know when something tries to get into our heart that is not what's in our heart. So what does he say? Well, therefore, we hunger for pure nourishment of God's word, a spiritual milk that strengthens our faith and safeguards us against deception. So I want to challenge you to do two things, and then I'm going to talk to the people who are out here prophesying and know your false. First of all, I want you to seek truth. I want you to intentionally make sure you are studying the Scriptures. Allow the word of God to be your compass to discern truth from falsehood. I tell the members of my church all the time, listen, if you want to know whether or not Pastor Justin is speaking the word of God or prophesying what the Lord has said, go check the scriptures we cite. If you're getting up and preaching and teaching and receiving something from someone that you don't think is true and one, feel free to leave that church. I want to give every person watching this video today you have freedom to leave the church you're at if you feel that that person is false. Do not let your heart get attacked by malice, deceit and envy. Number two, pray for discernment in the face of what's deceptive. Pray for wisdom. Pray for discernment. Ask God to guard your heart. Ask God to guard your mind and protect you from the sway of false prophets. The reason being, false prophets pose a serious threat to our faith. They use a deceptive tactic to mislead people and draw them from the truth in Jesus Christ. Now, to those who are out here, the pastors, the leaders, the preachers who are false prophets. And you're watching this video. You're engaging with me today. Let me tell you this. Stop your calling. You're too anointed to use the world's tactics to do Jesus's work. Just stop. You don't have to over the top culturalize your words. You don't have to make up what God has said. And you don't need to lie on Jesus. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life. And if he's good enough for the people you pastor to lead, he's good enough for you to lead as well, to lead you as well. Be vigilant in God's word. Unmask the deceit that's in front of you. And you don't have to put a video out to call someone out. Just depart and let God do the hard work. And he may not do it on your timeline, but let me tell you this, if you are blocking someone or if someone you're serving is blocking people from seeing Jesus, God's going to deal with them.
