Welcome to goodies with Chef Chef Homeboy rd. That's what they call that one. Hey, Sister Linda, how are you?
Hello.
I am so excited to do this with you. We welcome everybody to Good Eats with Chef Homeboy RD and Chef Linda. Chef Linda. Yes. I'm so excited. So what are we cooking today and what is going on?
So first of all, I wanted to give you a gift on behalf of the culinary ministry.
Oh, thank you. I'm gonna definitely look at it. Yes, I'm totally looking at it. Right? Oh, my God.
What?
Come through.
Yes, yes.
You see? Is this the reward for beating Deacon Hannah's brisket? Is that what this award was? Thank you so much. I appreciate this.
Thank you. So today we're gonna do a heart healthy chili. Okay. And we're gonna make it really easy for you. We're gonna. I'm your sous chef today, so you're leading and everything.
Oh, sweet.
So let's go ahead and get started. We have four or five different kind of beans. We have a little tomato based, tomatoes with chilies.
Okay.
And what you're going to do is you're going to turn it on. And first of all, what I like to do is kind of get people to come into the kitchen. So we'll start that with a little olive oil.
Okay. Now tell me, what's the benefits of using olive oil?
Well, it's hard, healthy, but we're going to do something that's going to switch it up later. You'll see.
I'm going to use a capful. Is that a good amount of olive oil?
Yeah, sprinkle it in there.
So if I'm searing something at home.
So you're gonna saute the. What we're gonna do is use a little fresh garlic. And this is the way we get people in the kitchen. And you guys know that friendship. Sometimes you smell them onions and stuff and you say, oh, something's going on in the kitchen. This a little trick. That's how you get people, get them ready, get their palate ready to eat.
Now this is where we get the term aromatics from.
Uh huh. For aromatics. So go ahead and turn that up a little bit. I want them to smell it. You can put a little more garlic. Garlic is good for your blood pressure, right?
Mm.
So yeah, get it going, get it going. And like, you know what? We gonna be healthy. A little more in there.
Now we ain't deep frying this.
No, we not. We sauteing it. But you got a lot of food. Get some more garlic in there. Okay. And then with that, we got some chopped sweet yellow onions. The sweet yellow onion?
Yes, ma'. Am.
Put a little of those in there. Okay, that's good. That's good.
I'm a big guy. I don't know what y' all looking at.
So can you guys smell. Start to smell something? I'm hoping you do. I'm hoping you do.
I am doing my very best. Those of you who are not as safe, who's just as unsafe as I am. Everything in me is trying to not sing Migos right now because I'm trying to be in the kitchen cooking like a stir fry. And it's just.
You know what chili is good for this winter sp coming into the fall. And this is a good meal, little quick meal to do if you're a working parent and the children are hungry, the husband, the wife.
So how much?
So we got some free use. About a pound. That's about a pound of. We did some pre seasoned turkey.
So how many. How much onion did you put in? There was about a whole onion.
Half an onion. A half an onion.
So half an onion.
A very small onion.
And that was about a tablespoon of garlic.
Tablespoon of garlic, yes. And all of that.
And then a pound of ground turkey.
And it's pre seasoned. Awesome.
So as you guys can see, this is something you can do at the end of the day. You can pre cook some of this turkey, right? You can do some of this stuff pre cooked so that you're able to have a good, healthy, hearty meal.
That's right.
Yeah. So what type of beans are we using?
We're gonna use. And we're using canned beans. Okay. So you go to the store, get all your favorite beans. We have some pinto beans. We have some white pinto beans. We have some black beans. We have my favorite, which is some ranch beans. You guys ever saw those ranch beans?
Never heard of ranch beans.
They good, huh? So we're gonna add all these beans.
Okay.
In here.
This is making me hungry.
Okay. You're a little fast.
Thank you. Oh, I am.
You smell it now?
Cause the cook.
Yeah, it's cuz the cook and the cook.
Yes.
So we're gonna add all these beans together, y'. All. And the good thing about it with the beans, they're even better. And some people, sometimes we make our own red beans. Do you guys change your red beans after you've done your homemade beans and stuff, you switch it over and turn it to chili at the end of the week. Have you ever tried that with Black Eyed Peas. It's good. Try it with Black Eyed Peas.
Now, do you eat your Black Eyed peas on yours? Do you eat your black eyes on New Year's?
I sure do.
Okay, same here. Y' all better eat your black eyes on you. That's the reason why we earn all this stuff we in right now. Black folks stop eating their Black Eyed Peas.
Yeah.
We stopped giving weapons to our children, and we stopped eating. Sorry. I get authentic around food. I'm sorry. I'm not supposed to say that, but, yeah, eat your Black Eyed Peas and get a. Get a switch. Hallelujah.
So. So what we're doing right now is we're just adding all these black communities.
We stopped giving weapons and stop eating Black Eyed Peas.
Oh, you used to get a whooping when you.
Did I get a weapon?
Oh, I know you got a whooping.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Don't worry. I bet that song. You ever hear that rap song where I didn't get shot today? I used to say, I didn't get a whooping today. That's how bad I see.
I'm in the kitchen, so I in the kitchen, I get real authentic. And that just made me think about Tupac. And there's a song that Tupac had called Hit Him Up. And you just had me thinking, yeah, who shot you? Put the punk. Yeah, all that type of stuff. Right. So.
All right, so you're gonna add the beans now.
So did you freshly chop these tomatoes or.
No, Those are rotel tomatoes. You know, those canned tomatoes.
So it's okay to use those Rotel tomatoes?
Yeah, those are rotel drained, and that's about a half a can.
Half a can. So we have how many different beans? Five different types of beans?
Yeah, I think we had about five. Let's put them all in.
Okay, I'll put them all in there. Now, y' all know y' all smell this. Oh, my God.
And then you can add a little bell pepper. We forgot. I forgot to give them the bell pepper earlier for you guys.
So forget this. This is going to be.
But that's okay. We're going to still cook it later. You guys can. Okay. And then. Okay, so after you've mixed. Got that mixed up.
Yes, ma'. Am.
If you need to add a little chicken broth or vegetable broth.
Yes, I need a little soupy for me.
And then we're going to add the spices.
So this is chicken broth.
This is a little chicken broth just to thicken it up. Okay. And you could turn that up if it's not seeming like it's not going fast.
I think I'm in the right.
Okay. Okay. So you know the chili. Hot chili mix in a package. Okay. We have a little of that we're gonna add now. We're gonna start adding now is.
I've heard stories about being too much. There being too much sodium in that. Do you make your own chili mix or.
You could, but I don't.
Okay.
But you. They do sell the low sodium in the store.
Okay.
Okay. So he trying to really get healthy.
I am.
Some things I am. I know I'm trying to be around long, but we have some. Go ahead, chef. Go ahead. Add the whole thing, right? Yeah, yeah.
Okay. Is that turned up my wrist, right? You saw that. I know you saw that. I know y' all saw that. That's all.
Then we have some chili powder. Okay. That's about a shake. Yeah, go shake it. And then I always buy spices. I shop a lot at different stores. How many of you guys buy spices? Sometimes you see them at Marshalls and TJ Maxx. They got the best. Huh? But Sam's club really got the best.
So where are some places around here, sister Linda, that you recommend if we're trying to eat healthier here that we.
Could go shopping at on Saturday at the farmer's market?
Yes, yes. Have y' all had them strawberries? It's like the third vendor. Oh, my God. It's like Jesus, like, came down and planted those like.
So that's just some more chili seasoning that I found somewhere. And then, of course, we. You gotta have. You have to have cumin.
Yes.
Okay. One of the beans that we used was baked beans today. And because it had a little sweetness, I like my chili just a little sweet. I. How about that? So that's a little secret. When I'm using all the cans and then to bring it together. You ever see that tomato chicken bouillon in the store with the red top? I use it for my chili. We use it for spaghetti.
Really?
Uh huh. And it's just really, really good. You can use that. Yeah.
Okay.
And that just makes it.
Now tell me a little about this bouillon, because I've never used this before.
Well, you'll see it a lot of in the Mexican dishes they use it, the enchiladas and different things and your tacos. And it's just a. It's a tomato based chicken, dried bouillon.
Okay.
It's very good. It's a staple in the cabinet.
Maybe I get to choose four people to come taste it.
Okay. And then one more thing. I just had some paprika and a little lemon lime paprika. Just a. I don't know what you.
Laughing about, Deacon May. Yes, we. That. That's a guarantee at this point. That's as long as you're going to be Santa Claus for our Christmas program. As long as you're going to be Santa Claus. If you agree to it, De. Me, Steve and Deacon Mayfield. That's going to be fun.
So my family's from Shreveport, Louisiana.
Okay.
And we do butter always make it better. I know we messed up the heart. Healthy there.
Hold on for.
Oh, just a little.
I don't know why I just got.
Let me tell you about butter.
I thought you were talking about grits or something.
Let me tell you about butter. Butter is a thickening, but it makes your beans. You ever see how your beans is creamy? That's the secret. So just.
So I just put it in there. Just put it in and swirl it around.
Yeah, just hit it. Okay. You know, it's good. Okay. So that's your butter for the day. That's your butter for the day. But this is wonderful.
So this would feed an entire family. I mean.
Okay. And then one more thing. A little more onion pepper.
Okay.
I mean, onion powder. Oh, I got it. See? There you go. Thank you. And you just let that simmer.
Okay. Y' all be thinking, I don't know how to cook, Michelle. I don't know what you think this is like. Look at the color.
The color's beautiful.
Oh, God.
And all the different colors of the beans and stuff.
Oh, my gosh. This smells amazing. It looks amazing. So thank you. So, Celinda, so tell me some of the benefits, if you don't mind, of eating healthier for just our people in general, like the importance of some baked things versus fried things or whatever your suggestions are for healthy eating.
Well, I love beautiful salads and as you know, friendship. When we put our salads out, we finish them, right. And we have a lot of little secret things that we put in there. We like to add a little apples, chopped apples and crushed apples, and just different things that make it really good. You know, a nice balsamic, raspberry, balsamic dressing. But I'm a visual person when I eat, so when you present it really beautifully with a lot of different kind of baby greens and different things, it's just really good. Yeah. Drink a lot of water, too, y'. All.
Okay. How much water a day?
I have a little, which I, you know, okay, Pastor, why you messing with me? I got about four of them. I looked at my hands. I got four I've ordered. You ever seen a. Those hydrate bottles and they tell you how much to drink? When I'm doing good, I try to finish one of those. But when you're running around, then you need to know all the pit stops at the different places where you could go, because you.
You know, I want to say one thing, too. Like, whoever cooked this chili did an amazing job.
Okay?
It's just whoever it was, right? Did an amazing job. Deacon Mayfield. Come on, let's try it. Deacon Mayfield, come on. Is Kai here? Where's Kai? Is Kai in here?
Come on. Kai's not here.
Kai's not here. Come on. Come on.
Come here. Come on.
Yes.
Come on.
Come on. Deacon Mayfield.
Who else?
Come on, buddy. Come on, buddy. Come on. Yes. Come on.
We're gonna give them the finished one.
Yeah, we'll give them the finish. Oh, you don't give mine.
You girls gotta cook them.
I always gotta cook. Oh, never mind.
Well, we could try yours.
No, we can definitely do the finished one.
It's the same.
I know, but, like, yours has been cooking. It's got love in it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You want to serve?
Yeah, I can serve. Come on down. Welcome to Chef Homeboy rd's kitchen. I'm so glad you're here. Oh, it does, doesn't it? Oh, my God. Oh, there you go.
And you can have. Before you go, would you like to have a little. We have sour cream and cheese. I done messed it up, Pastor.
Oh, you're good.
Okay, let's. Let's make these for you.
Can y' all give it up for Sister Linda for this amazing. Now, Sister Linda, while we're here, I know you do a lot of work here you go the rest with our culinary ministry. So can you tell us a little bit about the culinary ministry here at Friendship and Ways that people can get connected with the culinary ministry here?
Yeah, our culinary ministry, we serve a lot of all the church events. We try to serve the prayer breakfasts. We serve the church anniversaries, Pastor. Anniversaries. Anytime the pastor calls us to serve something, you would like some of that, but get some chips. Yes. But we also do the repast for the families in the church, but we try to do it with excellence. And then every January, we have what we call the Food Serve safety workshop, and that gives you certified in food safety. We have a guest chef come in to teach the class. And, you know, you kind of Learn about, you know, heating food and how long to keep food out and things like that. So we try to keep it safe and for everybody. And then, as you can see, our church family, they do enjoy the fruits of what we've done and stuff. And so if you are interested in serving a ministry, we definitely could use. Use you. Okay. So you can sign up at the back today if you are in interested, at the connect desk, or you can contact the church office, and they'll make sure that I get the information. Okay. And I want to tell you it's always an honor to me and a privilege to serve you guys. And I hope that you see that we always try to serve you guys with excellence because we love you guys. Okay, So I might be grouchy sometimes, but that's the chef.
Thank you. So how is it? How is it?
It's just.
Not quite as good as my wife does it. Okay, well, yeah, How is it? Can y' all give it up for Sister Linda? Give it up for our taste testers. This is so awesome. You know, one thing I will say, I've said this before, and I'll say it again. I know sometimes I'm a lot. But when I brought this to Sister Linda about doing this opportunity, she was gung ho about it. My goal is we want to do anything short of sin to reach people for the love of Christ. And I believe in holistic ministry. And holistic ministry means when you leave out of here, you've got to eat this week. And so we want to hopefully empower you with some healthy recipes. We put some recipes out a couple of weeks ago, and we'll have some more that go out occasionally. They're on the back wall. We just want to simply encourage all of us to eat healthy, to eat whole. And. And this one right here, you saw how quickly put this together. You let this simmer for how much longer have you let this simmer?
We're going to simmer for about 10, 15 minutes, and then that's it.
And now you're free and ready to eat. And so, once again, give it up for Sister Linda, our taste testers. We're so glad. Thank you guys are here. And we got to do this again. We got to do this again. Yeah, this was fun. And so I'm glad.
