A short YouTube commentary (by Justin R. Lester, June 20, 2024) that challenges the common claim that John 11:35 is the shortest New Testament verse and asserts that in the Greek 1 Thessalonians 5:16 ("Rejoice continually") is shorter. The speaker notes an apparent tension between "Jesus wept" and "rejoice continually," then appeals to Hebrews 4:15 to explain how Jesus’ shared humanity and victory make continual rejoicing possible; ends with a like/subscribe prompt.

You may think you know the shortest verse in the Scriptures, but you don't. If you said the shortest verse in the New Testament is John 11:35 that Jesus wept, then you're wrong. And I'm gonna tell you the truth. Because in the Greek, the original language of the New Testament is actually 1 Thessalonians 5:16 which says Rejoice continually. The ironic thing is that these two verses seem to be very contradictory. But here's a really cool thing. Hebrews 4:15 says that we don't have a Savior who can't sympathize with us, so we can actually rejoice continually because Jesus became human in the flesh and faced the same struggle that we did, and he overcame them all. He gave us the victory, too. You want to learn more about Scripture? Like and subscribe for more.
