Justin R. Lester explains that communion is an act of surrender, not just a ritual. In the first century, people reclined while eating, and the woman who anointed feet while someone was still eating showed what true surrender looks like. Lester asks where God is calling you to stay and surrender.

What if I told you communion didn't look like this but it looked more like this laying down on the floor. Sorry the woman with the jar of oil she came and she poured oil on his feet while he was still eating because men were lay on the floor the tables are 12 inches off the ground. So what does that mean to you? That communion and food is an act of surrender. You're not able to quickly get up and move around. You laying down on the floor completely surrendered to the people you are in community with. Maybe our issue with communion maybe our issue with eating is we're so quick to get up and leave that we're not staying where we are. Where is God calling you to stay? Where is God calling you to surrender? May this day, may this week be a week of surrender for you.
