So whether you are scaling your own peak or seeking to support others in theirs, you're in the right place. Let's begin the climb.
I already forgot what episode.
19.
Good memory.
It has a 1 in it. I was happy.
All right, welcome back. We are here with episode 19. We're actually on the beach today in Monterey, California. Beautiful view. Can't get any more prettier than this. I have Lisa from Owners Club today. This is her first podcast, so take it easy on her, or I'll try to take it easy on her. So welcome to the show, and I appreciate you having the courage to just be on the show today. So thank you.
Yeah, well, thank you for having me.
Absolutely.
So tell us a little bit, uh, background about yourself, like how you got started in real estate, and then we can talk about where you are today.
Okay, well, I'm, uh, first of all, I'm from Canada.
Oh wow, okay. And that's where you live today?
Yeah, I'm about 9 hours north of Vancouver.
Okay.
So yeah, I just, I've always, I've done a few fix and flips over my lifetime in different areas. So yeah, I jumped into Sub2 and then started doing the course and wondering how I'm going to maneuver into the American market.
And so the fix and flips that you're doing, they were in Canada?
Yes.
Okay, so nothing in the US?
I've done nothing in the US yet because then I, I jumped into Owners Club here at the end of March.
Yeah.
And, um, yeah, so I, and I had a fix and flip in mind. So once I signed up in Owners Club, I was like, okay, I got to take some serious action now, right? And, um, yeah, it's been good. Just, it's, it's familiar to me, you know, doing basic reno upkeep, cleaning it out, modernizing it, you know, paint, deep, deep cleaning. I didn't do like an extensive, but just super, super clean it up.
Okay.
Okay. Painting, fixing lighting.
And you were managing all this as like a kind of like overseeing the project?
Yeah.
Okay, nice.
Very cool. Some less stairs and some doors on the shop, and it's over 2 acres of land. So I knew that would be very coveted because people want to live out— since COVID people really like having acreage.
Yeah.
And I don't know, you know, why, but it's very coveted in my area.
So, okay.
Yeah, nice. So that was my draw. I knew that would be the bait.
And what, um, do you know enough about the US, like, market on fixer-flips? Because I don't know anything about Canada. Like, I'm just curious, are the margins, like, pretty pretty good as far as fixer-flips, or just depends on the deal?
It depends on the deal.
Yeah.
Yeah. And it's— I know several realtors, so they're always keeping an eye out, you know, for me. And yeah, if the numbers are right, then definitely.
And are you doing these with like traditional real estate? No creative?
None. No creative.
Are you looking to do creative in some upcoming projects?
Yes. Definitely. Yeah, I'm definitely looking to partner up with somebody or learn my— the US rules of real estate and Canadian are so different. Like, ours are really regimented. It's pretty straightforward. Forward in dealing with banks, we do nothing creative there. Yeah, right. There's no taking over anything.
Yeah. So you wouldn't be able to really do fix and flips. Because you probably don't, like, you're not a citizen, right? Technically.
Yeah.
Yeah. So you wouldn't have like a U.S. credit score or anything like that to get a loan.
Yeah.
So that would be, you'd have to partner with someone for them to get the loan, right? And then you could like manage a project or do whatever, right?
Yeah. Yeah, exactly. That's, that's my plan.
Yeah.
People, um, being at the conference here, I've connected with a few, um, one to teach me how to properly set up. I've got an LLC already set up but nothing else, no bank account yet, or and she just made a program to follow to— for international, how to set it up properly. And somebody else, um, referred me to another person that I'm going to reach out to who does— she's from Canada and has moved to the States doing fix and flips.
Nice.
So yeah, there's some connections there.
So this is your first year in Owners Club, right? Because you just joined recently and Sub2 and Yeah. Have you had a chance to figure out like what your Mount Everest is yet?
It's coming together.
Yeah.
It's, I've been an entrepreneur my whole life and I'm into building maintenance and construction, so.
Oh wow. Okay.
Being a business owner, I do love business. Love the whole idea. I love the freedom of it, you know, and just not being locked into a 9 to 5.
So you don't work 9 to 5 today?
Never have. I knew quite early, in like in my 20s, I think I had one job and that was it. I, um, yeah, I knew I didn't— I couldn't do it. So, wow. Yeah, I've been very, very blessed.
Yeah, nice.
But I think I—
I think we're on a drone real quick.
Oh, lovely! Look at us!
I almost brought my drone actually, but I, I didn't want to worry about all that. Okay, usually they do the drone when Pace is here, but I don't see him here yet. Yeah, okay, sorry, I didn't mean to— I just saw a bunch of people doing that.
Oh great. Um, yeah, so I'm excited. Um, just keep learning and, you know, being, um, with the Owners Club, it definitely helps you open up your mindset and cultivate help you cultivate because the room, this, uh, the atmosphere is just enriching, empowering.
Yeah, I think it's pretty— especially if you've been in business a while, like, it's pretty easy to get in the mindset of like, oh, I've been in business like my whole life, what else am I going to learn, right? But it sounds like you're getting a really good benefit out of Owners Club so far and learning a lot. Yeah, next level thinking kind of stuff.
Next level, you know, working on my mindset. Right? Because even being a business owner, doing the same thing for years— I've had a business for 33 years so far.
Oh wow.
Great clients, you know, I've— it's given me a great life, but I want to take it next level, right? Just to produce impact and, and help. When you ask me about my Mount Everest, I want to help, I think, bridge business owners that want to retire and help a new generation come in and build, you know, consult and help that, that bridge, you know, because there's respect involved. And not to come in and destroy something that's been created, like myself for 30 years. Yeah, right. Your, your clients get to know, love, and trust you.
Yeah.
So if I can help bridge that gap for somebody so that that business, they've— their baby that they've worked on for so many years doesn't die, right? And help cultivate that.
Do you have like a number in mind that you're shooting for over the next 5 years?
Wow. Well, probably help like 1,000 business owners.
I love it. Yeah. I love it.
Yeah. I could see it. Yeah. I could definitely see that. I love helping people and love people in general. So to be able to help them, it's not about the money. Yeah. It's about creating impact. And for me it's just, yeah, I don't wanna see businesses die. I being a business owner. Yeah. Yeah. That's your, that's your baby, right? You put your blood, sweat into it. So. Yeah.
Awesome. Well, so how can the people that are watching, how can they bring value to you? Is it deal flow that you're looking for or is other business opportunities? Do you want to buy any businesses?
Well, I'm again learning the process. So I think, yeah, bringing deals or businesses that, you know, want to sell.
Yeah.
Right? And let's, yeah, do a deal together.
And are you looking in any particular market or just kind of nationwide as long as it makes sense financially? Yeah.
Yeah. I think, yeah, for now, Yeah, until I get more veteraned in it.
Are you thinking like in the construction or is there a specific industry you're looking at?
No, I mean construction, I'm quite savvy in, right? And all the trades that go with that, right? The HVAC, plumbing and that. But yeah, I don't know. I'm building that as I go. I haven't narrowed that down yet.
Love it. Yeah. I mean, I'm sure like even even my Mount Everest is like evolving all the time, right? As you kind of like grow and learn different things, it starts to change. Base was talking about that today where it's going to change, you know, even if it's like super well-defined today. Yeah, it may look something different. You may meet someone and that may cause it to grow or may cause it to completely change focus in a different area.
Right.
That makes more sense. Yeah, I think it's definitely okay to like not have it set in stone.
Right, exactly. Yeah, because, you know, in life we're always growing and we're learning and growing. So how that looks, I, I just, I want to take what's in my hands right now, what I'm familiar with. Yeah, right. Fix and flips have been that, um, in business and clients. And now I just want to take it to the next level of just working more from the head up, not right in the field anymore, right? But to Yeah, go back and help that 20-year-old that I was at one time and show them the ropes, right? Help that transition. You've got a whole generation, especially in the trades right now, where there's such a need and be able to, you know, those new apprentices that are coming out instead of them thinking, oh, I'm going to go work from 9 to 5 for the next 30 to 40 years. You know, see that, that, hey, we can catapult you, you know, 20 years by, um, bridging that, right? And helping you take over somebody's existing business, teaching you the ropes, getting to know their clientele. That takes years to cultivate because, again, those clients— was a new person, you have to go out and build your reputation, right? And people get to know Trust, right? You— so underpromising and overdelivering, it's definitely something you can teach this new generation, right?
Love it. Yeah. Okay, one last question for you. Okay, parting thoughts. What do you feel like— it doesn't have to be one, maybe it could be one or two or three— what are the, like, the top traits that you have do you think has made you, like, successful in business or just in life in general over the past, like, however long years?
Well, I had a mentor tell me years ago that your word should be as good as your handshake. And, you know, some, some old values are as good today as they were yesterday. Yeah. Always answer your phone. Always.
That's rare in construction. That is rare.
It is. And I always answer my phone. I, um, and just being disciplined, like show up for your clients, right? And your employees.
Yeah.
Sorry, what is this meeting about?
It's a real estate meetup. Yeah, looks like.
But yeah, I think, um, yeah, I think just being, being there, present, and You know, build those goals up, but pour into your baby and it will look after your business and it will look after you.
Love it.
You're gonna get what you pour into it.
Yeah.
But be a man of your word, work hard. Your work ethic and your character will befall you, right? It'll go ahead of you. I've never, I've honestly never advertised. Really? I haven't advertised in 30 years.
Wow.
Yeah, just good word of mouth and just quality of work.
And yeah, that carries itself.
Yes. Yeah, it's been good.
Very good. Awesome. Well, thank you so much. Do me a favor, everyone watching, please drop a comment down below and tell Lisa how she killed it on this podcast and did phenomenal. So thank you again, and we'll see you next time.
See you later. [MUSIC] [MUSIC]
