Ep #166: Imperfect Action for Faster Results
18 Sept 2023 · 9 min
In this solo episode of the Get a Six-Figure Job You Love and Thrive podcast, host Natalie Fisher argues that perfectionism—instilled by academic success—can cripple a job‑search and career progression. She explains that waiting for an "A+" or flawless interview delays real learning, because the true growth comes from taking imperfect action, experimenting, and gathering real‑world data from failed or messy experiences. Fisher shares coaching anecdotes, including advice from a mentor to deliberately seek uncomfortable, "stumped" moments, and describes how her Six Figure Curriculum community is already shifting toward this mindset during an eight‑week challenge. She outlines how imperfect action builds confidence, interview presence, and the ability to tell compelling stories that land offers. The episode also includes a promotional call‑to‑action: listeners who leave a podcast review receive free access to her $97 mini‑course, "8 Reasons Why You Get Interviews But No Job Offers." A brief personal story about baking a berry trifle for her mother’s birthday adds a human touch before the episode closes.

Welcome to the Get a Six-Figure Job You Love and Thrive podcast. This is episode 166, Imperfect Action for Faster Results. Welcome to the Get a Six-Figure Job You Love and Thrive podcast, where I, Natalie Fisher, am teaching you weekly how to land your premium role that you love and thrive in it. Let's go. Today's episode is on imperfect action. So I just coached in my community group, the Six Figure Curriculum, and we just kicked off the challenge. And it was very interesting to see how many people already had the shift. And I wanted to share it here with you. Imperfect action creates results faster. So if you're somebody who, you know yourself to be an achiever, you got good grades in school, you're a very good student. You know how to study and pass a test. That could be really hindering you in your career, in your job hunt, in getting results in your job. It can really hinder you because it's a completely different way of thinking. So the problem is if you're thinking, I need to get an A+, I need to get an A, I need to get it perfect. This way of thinking serves me because it means I do really good work. It might not be serving you here in your job hunt, in your career. The reason we have it is because we were taught that's how we need to think in school. We need to study and then get the good grade. But when we try to apply that to things that require failing, one of my clients had said they don't teach you how to fail in school. No, that was the problem. He didn't know how to fail, so he didn't know how to actually create results. Because when you fail, and failure is a thought, you can call it failure or you can call it an experiment that didn't yield the result that you expected. So Why it doesn't work is because when we're trying to wait to get something perfect, or we don't get something perfect right away and we get really discouraged because that's what we expect of ourselves and that's what we think we should do, then we end up not trying again fast enough, or not trying again at all, or maybe just being in negative emotion for a long time, or thinking that there was something wrong with us because we didn't get it perfect. And And now we should wait, study, do more, get more certifications, get more whatever to make sure we do it perfect next time. That's wrong because the time you spend trying to get it perfect and then the one attempt that you do, that one attempt was actually the thing that moved you forward, not all the time you spent trying to get it perfect. So not the certifications, not the preparation, that's not what did it. What actually moved you forward the most was the actual interview, was the actual conversation, even if you failed it, because now you have real-world data. Now you have real-world information. Now you have real-world intel, insight to now move forward differently. And there is like 27 things that you can explore within that experience versus getting another certification. You already know how to do that. That didn't teach you anything. It taught you what the certification taught you. It refined your skill of studying and succeeding at a test or passing an exam or You know, proving that you knew something that someone taught you. You already knew how to do that. You were already good at that. That was comfortable. That did not help you when going to an interview, being in the moment, talking to people, engaging, being present, paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and actions in that interaction. That is where the growth is. That is where you actually need to be. You need to spend more time in those situations, right? And when you're not doing that, that's what slows your growth. So the alternative solution Is that you understand this, have this awareness, and put yourself in more uncomfortable situations more so that they can become more comfortable for you so that you do get better at it. So when I was learning how to coach, I had somebody, one of my coaching mentors, say to me, you want to be in situations where you are stuck and stumped and you don't know what to say to the client. She's like, you want to get into more of those stumped, embarrassing, I don't know situations because those are the situations that make you grow at a leapfrog pace, right? And now I'm at the point where people can bring me literally anything. Like, we coach on career stuff, but you can bring me literally anything and I will be able to help you work through it. And not because I know the answer for you, just because I know what questions to ask you. I know how to prod in your brain to get the answers from you, and I know how to create a breakthrough and a clarity moment for you. But the way that that happened was not by reading all the coaching books, not by a long shot, not by attending all the coaching webinars and watching and consuming. It was by literally being in coaching interactions. Where somebody would say something or bring a problem where I was like, uh, I don't know, I'm gonna have to check on that. And, or, or trying it and getting it wrong, trying it a few times and getting it wrong. Right now I'm at the point where like, bring it, I got it. I know how to coach you. I know how to figure out what it is that you want to do. Right. And that's my goal. It's like, you know better than me. So why that works is because, yes, it's uncomfortable and yes, it's icky. Sometimes you're like, ah, I don't really wanna put myself in those situations, but as long as you don't, Mm-hmm. Then you'll be farther behind. You'll be like, I don't know why I'm not getting results from all these resumes I'm submitting. I don't know why I'm getting results. I have 75 certifications and a degree. I don't know why, like, people just say I'm so smart, but they're not hiring me. Like, it's because the growth is in the imperfect discomfort of the situations. And I know that sounds unpleasant, but it's really what gets you there. And you get to the other side of it in a very confident state. That's what actually creates confidence, like the skill of being in an interview, being present, being engaged, being focused on the problem they're having, that is what's going to create you to be able to help them solve it. And then when you get masterful at that, when you get masterful at creating relevance, when you get masterful at telling them a story in a way that they think, oh, that's what we need, like that in the moment, and dealing with whatever they're saying, whatever they're asking you, that is the skill. Okay? That's what is required. And so, On my call today, I realized a lot of people had struggled with that for a long time, and that breakthrough will move many people forward right away. So I wanted to come to the podcast, share that with you today, and let you know that if you are having trouble taking that imperfect action, if you find yourself in that stuck phase of like, I don't want to go on interviews, or I don't really know what I want to do, I'm not really sure if this is right for me. If you're saying I don't know a lot, then This is what my program helps you with. It actually helps you to walk through these steps of the imperfect action with support, with handholding, and it helps you get to the point where you are feeling comfortable and confident to then take action and create success. And then you get to create bigger and bigger and bigger successes because you build on that muscle of taking the imperfect action and creating confidence. So that's how it's done. And I hope that that was helpful for you. It is just a short one today. Because I'm gonna go off to celebrate my mom's birthday now, and I made her a trifle. So my dad, he likes traditional British English trifle. And then for summer— I don't know if you knew this about me, but I like to bake— and for summer I just thought, I'm gonna make a berry trifle because we have all these fresh berries here, and I thought that's different. So I made a berry trifle, and my uncle was here from Colombia, and my mom's from Colombia, South America. And so I made this trifle, and my mom just went nuts, and she's just like— This, this is what I want for my birthday. So I made that for her, and I'm going to take it and go spend some quality time with my mom for her birthday. So I hope that little tidbit was helpful for you today. I look forward to seeing you back on the podcast next week. And if you are in my program, if you have just joined, welcome!
