Ep #169: Deep Transformation vs. Surface-Level Tips
9 Oct 2023 · 22 min
In this solo episode of the "Get a Six Figure Job You Love and Thrive" podcast, host Natalie Fisher reflects on a recent one‑on‑one coaching session that sparked the episode’s theme. She explains that most job‑seekers mistakenly focus on surface‑level tactics—resume tweaks, networking scripts, ATS hacks—while the true barrier to landing premium, six‑figure roles is deeper: limiting beliefs, unexamined stories, and a lack of self‑awareness. Through the coaching call, Natalie demonstrates how asking probing questions about goals, past experiences, and internal narratives uncovers hidden emotional baggage that blocks confidence and action. She argues that genuine transformation requires uncomfortable introspection, deconditioning negative self‑talk, and developing mental skills to watch one’s own mind. Natalie contrasts this deep work with superficial tip‑giving, emphasizing that coaching should empower clients to become self‑reliant rather than dependent on a coach’s directives. She introduces her VCVC framework (Value Created, Value Communicated) as a method for quantifying and articulating one’s career value, and references program modules, masterclasses, and an 8‑week challenge that support this transformational approach. The episode concludes with a call‑to‑action: listeners who leave a podcast review receive free access to her $97 course “8 Reasons Why You Get Interviews But No Job Offers.”

Welcome back to the Get a Six Figure Job You Love and Thrive Podcast. This is episode 169, Deep Transformation Versus Surface Level Tips. Stay tuned. Welcome to the Get a Six Figure Job You Love and Thrive Podcast, where I, Natalie Fisher, am teaching you weekly how to land your premium role that you love and thrive in it. Let's go. Hello. I have interrupted all the things that I'm doing today to record this podcast because I was inspired to. I just had a call with a client this morning. When I opened up the program last month, I think it was, I offered 10 people who joined first and paid in full a one-on-one coaching spot. And so I've been working through those one-on-one calls and this one in particular sparked A podcast episode that I wanted to bring to you all here and share with you. So interesting, right? So interesting. This client comes to the call and she wants to work on her resume. She's like, well, maybe I need to change this. Maybe I need to change that. And that's mostly where people want to start. I find they want to start with the resume. And I noticed myself wanting to get to know them on a deeper level than that. And me kind of instinctively as a coach who's had all these years of experience coaching is like, I feel like there's more to it than that. There's always more to it than that. It's like making these changes on the resume. Yes, we'll get to that. That will happen naturally through this process, but that is not what this is actually about. But people come and they think, oh, we need to work on the resume. So what people think is the problem is never actually the problem. Because I thought to myself, I'm like, if we had just worked on the resume, she wouldn't have got what she needed in that session. Like, what she needed was so much deeper. So what ended up happening was I ended up asking her a few questions and I'm like, yeah, yeah, we'll get to the resume after. And we did, we did her resume at the end of the call. But what we started with was I was like, okay, what's your goal? What do you want? Why did you join? What do you want to achieve? And then I got into why, what steps have you taken and why do you think you don't have It, right? And so many limitations, so many negative stories, so many things came up from that. And it was a really intense call, right? Like there was crying, there was emotions, there was all this baggage, all this stuff that had been brought from years. And it's not that we have to focus on that a whole ton, but we have to become aware of how that stuff stops us. From putting ourselves out there, getting in front of the people that we need to get in front of, and being that magnetic vibe who considers ourselves valuable people who can contribute and focus on what other people need, we need to recognize our own brilliance first. And the step before that is often deconditioning all the negative stories about our own brilliance and about what we don't have and about what we're missing and about how long ago it was that we did something and about how our experience doesn't count and about how. We've taken time off, or how we've raised kids, how we've been out of it for too long, how we haven't really done this or that or the other, how we've had life circumstances get in the way, so therefore we couldn't work on our career. Like that is way more important than like some little lines that you put on your resume. And I'm not saying like yes, we need a resume, and there are certain things that make the resume more powerful, more impactful, and will get somebody's attention more than a blah resume that's boring. With the same fluffy terms that everyone else uses. There are clear things for that, but that is not what gets you a 6-figure job you love. It is not, right? You cannot get that without doing the other work first. So the problem is that the problem people think they have is never really the problem. And it got me thinking, why does everybody think that the problem is the resume when to me it's so clearly not the resume? I'm like, well, it might be because of what everybody sees online, like quick tips for improving your resume, or do this, do this, reach out like this, network like this, do this, do this, right? And you get these surface-level quick tips. And sometimes if somebody is ready for those, and that's really all you need is like, oh, I just need someone to kind of guide me to get going and then I'll get going and I have no limiting beliefs around it at all, then in theory they would just go through those steps and then they would land a job and that would be it. And yes, I have seen people do that, and in some areas of my life I've been able to do that too, right? But most of the time it's not that, because most of the time you would have already done that. It's kind of like there's all the diet and all the weight loss and all the gyms and all the— like, there's so many step-by-step plans and methods and diets and nutritional books. Like, we have information overload on that stuff, right? Just like there's information overload on resumes and on networking and on Um, getting through the ATS. And like, there's, there's information overload on quick tips, strategies, and tactics for all of that stuff. But why is it that so many people are still struggling with it? And because if they just did all those things, then that would be the end of the struggle, right? But no, it's always a different problem than you think. It's always a deeper problem than you think, and it can be very easily solved. So in this call, we solved a lot of those limitations that she was having, and she was— Like I think transformation occurred on that call, and she was like, "This really works, doesn't it?" And she was kind of in disbelief how quickly she could shift from how she was feeling before to how she started feeling after presented with some new some new thoughts that would land with her in her body, and she would feel them differently. Right? And that's different for everybody. So it's important that you get some personalized attention on your brain, on your thoughts, on somebody who can see your limitations that you can't see. And if you're one of those people. People who's been tweaking your resume over and over and over, and you've been going to other experts and you've been trying to get your resume to be perfect. And if you've been doing that and you don't have the job you want, it's because your resume is not the problem. Your resume is probably great, and that's just an easy thing for you to tweak or adjust or spend time on, but it's not the real reason. So how we solve this is by— first of all, it takes discomfort. We have to go places that are uncomfortable, right? Like this client of mine that I'm talking about, she had to bring up some stuff that was really uncomfortable for her from 12 years ago. She had to address how she was feeling about that today, right? Because that was affecting her today and in what she wants to do today, right? And so it might be uncomfortable to address some of that stuff, and it might take you being willing to have someone ask you uncomfortable questions and you open up and introspectively look at where that might be getting in the way for you or what might be getting in the way for you, right? It's a, it's a problem-solving expedition of the mind, right? Your mind is having thought errors and you don't know what they are. You don't think they're thought errors. You just think they're real. You just think they're true. You just think it's like, oh, the sun came up. I don't have enough experience. You think those 2 statements are equally true, right? Or I need a college degree for that, right? The sun came up today. You think those 2 statements are equally true, right? That's a problem. And it's because we can't see them. They're blind spots. They're blind spots. So that's why coaching is so important. And I don't just mean— like, a lot of people think that coaching is just surface-level tips, like, oh, I'll tell you what to do here, I'll tell you what to write here, I'll tell you how to reach out, or I'll tell you what you need to be putting on your resume, or I'll tell you what to say, right? Like some clients of mine have said, I thought you were going to tell me what to say, and I didn't realize it was this whole big transformative thing you do. So it's not about those surface-level things. And I offer them, and just because I have them, right? I have the examples, I have the things that have worked, I have the impactful statement examples. So why not offer them in my program? Of course, I want to give my clients everything they possibly could need to succeed, but that is not the reason they succeed. It's never the reason they succeed. And again, I could— like, so much proof. It's like I could give 100 people all that same information and A lot of them wouldn't succeed with that information. So if that were the truth, if the information was what was actually going to create success, then that would break that whole belief system. It's not that. So people who keep reading blogs or keep reading the surface-level information, or maybe they're afraid— I've heard people say this before. They're like, oh, well, I don't want to hire a coach because I don't want someone to tell me what to do. I'm like, no, I'm not going to tell you what to do. And even if I did, you shouldn't do it if it doesn't feel right and aligned for you. If you don't You don't know that that's what you want to do. So coaching is not about surface level, do this, do that. And then like, this is maybe the old idea of coaching, or someone who's not in my world's idea of coaching is like, oh, they— you go to the coach, the coach tells you what to do, then you go and try it, and if it doesn't work, you go back and tell the coach it didn't work. No, that is not how it works, because that makes you dependent on the coach, right? You can't be dependent on the coach. You have to be empowering yourself and learning yourself, right? Because then the is not available, you get to work through the tools that you learned with the coach and you get to apply them and you get to go be successful. You get to go do another attempt and learn from it and figure it out and then be successful. Eventually, you are always going to be successful with this process. That's why I speak so passionately about it. So that's why oftentimes when we're trying to do things on our own, when we're trying to achieve a job search goal or a career goal, We're trying to achieve a certain salary or money or income goal. The reason why it doesn't work on our own is because we keep on hitting the same walls over and over without knowing that we're hitting them. And by that, I mean, we think the problem is not really the problem. Like we get the problem wrong. We try to spend time solving the wrong problem. So it doesn't work. And then what's created is a loop of frustration. So frustration over things that we think are the reason, but ultimately we can't change or we're not changing. And then we just start to get bitter or just decide things don't work, or and then seek evidence for it. So we'll see on LinkedIn if somebody's struggling, see lots of struggling posts. Then we'll be like, "Yep, see that's how it is for everybody. That's how it is in the world. It's just a tough time right now." We'll start to seek evidence that supports our crappy belief systems in the first place. And then if we do that for long enough, we just get bitter and maybe we go through the motions, but we're taking action from a thought and feeling from. a place that isn't successful and hasn't proven successful in the past. But we don't know we're doing that, right? We just don't know. So we need somebody to show you that, need someone to tell you that. And not forever. Like, once you figure— like, once you learn it, once you learn the awareness— because someone actually said on one of the coaching calls, he's like, I'm not very self-aware. And I was just like, huh, that's an interesting belief to have about yourself, that you're not self-aware. And so we dug into it and And so we were like, okay, well, a better way to address this would be, how could I be more self-aware? Why don't I think I'm so self-aware? Right? So, and, and he had some aha moments right there. Right? So you have to become aware. You have to learn how to have the awareness, learn how to be the watcher of your own mind, and, and then start to distinguish what is getting you results and what isn't. And this is all a skill, mental skills that I've been practicing for years, which is why now I can dive in and get the results I want, help people get the results I want. And I love it. And that's what I get to do. So that's the alternative solution is having somebody to help you do that. Okay. And in whatever area of your life it is that you're stuck and you're struggling and you've been there for years or for months or for longer than you want to be struggling, the alternative solution is to get high quality help, high quality coaching. And now I don't mean any coaching. I don't mean like, oh, here's how you write your resume differently. And I'm not saying that that won't help you. Maybe like I said, if you're at that point where you're like, I just need resume help. My beliefs are all intact. I'm ready to go. I have nothing holding me back. Then yeah. But for the people who have tweaked their resume a lot, who still haven't gotten the result, who haven't shown their resume to anybody yet, who don't know if their resume has even been seen by a human, your resume isn't the issue. And for this client in particular, she hadn't shown anybody her resume yet anyway. But that being said, there's an episode on how to test your own resume. In my program, we do have a whole module and recently a masterclass with one of my star students on resumes. Everybody loved it. It is great, but it is not useful unless you have addressed the underlying issues. So it's kind of like you can't like try to make a beautiful resume. It's like putting whipped cream on garbage or lipstick on a pig or whatever metaphor is funny to use, but it's like It doesn't address it, right? It doesn't address the real problem. It doesn't solve the real problem. And surface-level tips can often get confused with coaching, with like really actual transformative coaching, right? So that's why transformative coaching is going to be a necessity. It's going to work better than just trying to follow surface-level tips over and over and over and not getting the results and then being like coaching doesn't work, right? Because you you haven't experienced what coaching actually can. Be the transformative effects of it. And I didn't know this until I had my first transformative coach either. And the first transformative coach that I hired was a money coach. She completely helped me transform my mindset around money and business. And her story really inspired me, how she made such drastic changes with her money story, right? So I was like, I need to work with that woman. She knows, she knows how to help me. And I had my first transformative experience And I kept working with coaches ever since because I had the money to hire them. So why wouldn't I do that? Because every time I did, I advanced. It helped. It made me see things in a better light, in a different way, in a more empowering way. It made me stronger, and it made me better to help my clients because having worked with so many different coaches, I have the knowledge of all the different coaching styles and, and how, you know, to maneuver when things aren't working right. So So that's why it works better, is deep transformation needs to occur, and you might not be aware of that, versus surface-level tips happening. Okay? So the input of surface-level tips, not helpful. If you've already tried them a bunch of times and they're not working, it's just not working. Deep transformation, that's something that you keep iterating on. You keep getting curious about. You keep diving in on. You keep being willing to be uncomfortable. Keep do the work, or like see your growth and go towards it. So if your coach points something out that maybe makes you feel uncomfortable, or if you— if your coach suggests something that you should do that you have resistance around, then your job is to go towards it and say, hmm, I wonder why that is. I have a client in my program, she's awesome, and we're doing our 8-week challenge right now, and she's meticulously posting every day in the group about the challenge activities and stuff. And she said, I gave myself an extra day for this one because I felt so much resistance coming up. And I said, that is what seeing your growth and going towards it is, right? She's making fantastic progress, and I'm so excited for her because she's she's actually doing the work, and that's difficult for people, right? So it's easier to say it's not fair; it shouldn't be this hard. I don't know why I'm doing everything right. I'm doing all the things, and it's not working. It's easier to do that and make it the world's fault. than it is to say, where do I need to go deeper? What do I need to discover about myself? What is here for me to learn? And actually go in the direction where you make a different kind of investment in your own brain that creates a deeply transformative experience. That is a different option, and it's a more uncomfortable option. It's maybe a more unknown option because going with the surface-level tips and continuing to say it's not working, is easier because you've done that. So you know how to do that, right? But it's not what actually creates results for you. And you are missing out on a part of you that could be discovered that will help you in all areas of your life, not just this one career job search right now. It is literally the gateway to how you create success for the rest of your career. And it opens up your ability to earn, your ability to identify your own limitations around how much you're capable of earning and why, and how you can actually create the value in a very monetary-specific, obvious way, which we went through in the VCVC Masterclass just recently. If you don't know, VCVC stands for Value Created and Value Communicated, and it's a method that I teach inside my program where we actually break down the value that you have created in your career And we monetize it, and then you get to see exactly how you created value, and it becomes so much easier for you to go out there and talk to people about it. Right? There's a podcast on that. We'll reference that in the show notes. It's a very popular one. So what you need is to realize if that's what you're doing, and stop going towards these surface-level tips. And it's just what everybody does. It's like my resume, right resume, right resume. It's like, okay, but listen to that episode on resume, the resume test, right? Because there are, and like I say, I feel like I have to repeat myself all the time about it, but like, yes, there are things on the resume that will make it grab someone's attention more, that will help it, that will make it better, but it's not the place to start necessarily, especially if you haven't done the other work. Right. So necessary skills. It's going to be awareness. The awareness that maybe you need some help that you're not getting. The awareness that maybe you need a different type of help. The awareness that maybe there is help available for you, but you haven't been courageous enough to lean into it. Maybe because it's unknown. You're not sure. If you've been following me for a while and you haven't joined up yet, whatever the reason there is, the skill of being aware of that and why. And if you love my podcast, if you listen to me all the time and you you have gotten results or you've been having mindset shifts from the podcast, then you will guarantee to be successful inside the program because this is basically what that is. It's like a, hey, this is what I do. These are all the free samples I give you every week. And then inside the program, we get to go deeper and I get to pay more attention to you specifically in your specific circumstances. So necessary skills are awareness. Check out where you're not being so self-aware. Check out where you're not getting results. Things you keep doing that aren't working. What are they? Are you tweaking your resume? Do you keep applying and not getting results? Why are you still doing that? How many will it take for you to realize that you need some something different? And then, when you realize that, you can go all in for a transformative experience, and you can create different results, and you can start seeing how those different results are created pretty much immediately. Right? You can start seeing inside my program, people often tell me like, oh, I'm starting to enjoy this now. I'm already enjoying this. I love this content. They're like, I love how you just reframe everything. They're like, I'm so glad I stumbled upon this, right? So once you realize that there's a space for you where you can get your questions answered, where you can get deep transformation, where that's a thing that exists here and it's available to you, then Everything opens up and changes for you. So I love you. If you're here listening, thank you. I'm so grateful for you, and I'm so grateful for all the new participants who had joined and they're working their way through the challenge, and they're doing an amazing job.
