The BEST Boat Tour in Algarve, Portugal! (Family Travel Vlog)

In this vlog, Nate and Tilly document a day of family travel in the Algarve region of Portugal. After introducing their nomadic lifestyle—transitioning from an RV road‑trip across the US to backpacking around the world with three young children—they set out on a five‑hour boat tour from Portimão up the river to the medieval town of Silves. On the boat they sample a locally‑made hot sauce and enjoy the scent of orange blossoms. In Silves they explore a controversial Roman‑era bridge, a bronze statue of King Sancho I, and the walkable, historic streets, praising the town’s atmosphere. The family then enjoys a small glass of grappa and reflects on the challenges of traveling full‑time, such as grocery shopping without a car, managing backpack space, and handling chores. They celebrate their daughter Everly’s third birthday with pizza, cake, balloons, and a playful €5 snack‑finding challenge where each family member buys an unfamiliar snack and rates it. The vlog captures candid reactions to a range of foods—caramel‑flavored Oreos, ham‑flavored ruffles, tuna‑bean salads, guava juice, and a mysterious fruit—highlighting both enthusiasm and disgust. Throughout, the tone remains conversational and upbeat, with occasional moments of frustration about logistics, but overall conveys the joy of family adventure, cultural immersion, and spontaneous celebration.

Good morning. We have an exciting day today, and before it can begin, I need some coffee.
We're Nate and Tilly. 18 months ago, we started traveling the US in an RV with our 3 kids. Then we sold it all again, grabbed our backpacks, and are now exploring the rest of the world together.
We are going on a boat tour from the town of Portimão. This is why I don't film as much as I want. So we're going to to take a 5-hour boat tour today. There's a lot of boat tours that go out to see dolphins or caves or grottos or whatever, but we're actually going to take one that goes up the river to a town called Silves. Everly, you're so distracting. I think, uh, 3 hours on the boat, 2 hours exploring the little town. Anyways, it should be really fun. Okay, bye! I can't get anything done with you.
It's a hot sauce. This gentleman made it himself. I don't know how much to put it on, so we'll try that.
He said try first.
Yeah, let's try.
Sweet.
So good. It's hot. You're going to love it, Skyler.
Yeah, it is so purpley.
I'm scared. That's hot.
Like hot pepper flakes but liquid. Oh, that's hot.
We just turned the bend, so the guy came out and he was like, "No, right now, right now, stop, smell." You can actually smell the orange blossoms right now, and it's beautiful.
You can come sit with us later. Okay, okay.
So they said we had to be back by 4:30 so that Carlos can watch this game because there's apparently— there's a match with Porto tonight and, uh, you know, it's a big match, so we have to be back. So our goal is to go— we have 2 hours, we can go run around, check out a castle and some other things, and then come back and make sure that we're back before the match begins. So in the meantime, this bridge apparently was either some— it's controversial— it was either built by the Romans or the stones were used by the Romans and then rebuilt the bridge here. I'm not sure, but anyway, it's a little controversial, but we'll just say that it was built by the Romans so that they could cross the bridge. It's the only way to get across and get, uh, west. I guess guess I'm going to say. So pretty cool. That's like 2,000 years old. Crazy.
That bronze statue is of King Sancho I. It's a heroic depiction of the first Christian conqueror of the city in 1189. The sculpture by Leopold the Almeida and was given to Sylvus in 1966.
Made myself a new friend today. He'd be coming home with me if I could. He's so nice. You love that place, didn't you?
It was like the perfect town. It felt like it was really medieval and like tiny little non-driveable streets, really walkable. There was actually like people out and about and like cafes and restaurants and fountains and a grocery store you can actually walk to. So many towns that we've been to like that, there's nothing happening. So I would totally go back. I loved it.
It's the smallest mugs in the world. Wait, okay, there. Cheers! What is this? Grappa.
Grappa. I'll pour it.
That's pretty good. I kind of like it. I kind of like it.
They dropped us right off at our doorstep so we don't have to take the bus. Thank you so much. Yay! Thank you.
Bye-bye.
Bye.
So after a perfect day like that, I can't think of a better— well, I can think of a few better things than eating pizza, but the boys cannot. So yeah, we got takeout pizzas, but who cares because I can feed my family for about half the price going to Domino's, and it's like 100 times better. You know, a lot of times like you see this like Instagram-worthy stuff and like everything's like perfect. Yeah, our world's not perfect. We have fits and crying and all kinds of craziness that goes on and selfishness and stuff. We got 3 kids, for goodness sake, we're traveling the world with 3 kids. I'm sure we don't show it enough, but that's okay. Like, the thing is that it's hard sometimes, and yesterday was kind of like one of these, like, existential crisis, concerning kind of days. And today was perfect.
Today is chore day. Taking out the garbage, Asher has recycling, walking those out to the front of the building, and then we're going to the grocery store. One of the biggest annoyances of traveling full-time is food. It's great if you can go out to eat all the time, but we're a family of 5 and that's really expensive, so we have to go buy our own food. But when you're traveling full-time, you often don't have a car, so we have to walk to the grocery store. So we have a 15-minute walk with empty backpacks. We all have our backpacks that are empty to the grocery store. I have to make sure I don't buy buy too much groceries because then we can't carry them home. We have to throw our backpacks in the checkout line and it's like chaos and they're speaking Portuguese to me and I don't understand it. You speak very good French.
Gracias.
I get really overwhelmed because we have to fit everything in our backpack. I have to go grocery shopping like twice a week, sometimes more, but it is quite the annoyance. The boys are having a lot of fun. The best part about doing, uh, recycling is the glass. Okay, you gotta listen to it. Ah, so satisfying. You're gonna choke glass. Look, there's parking for caravans. I don't think our truck or our trailer would stay here, even if we attached them to each other. I'll try. And we're done. I was gonna film a whole bunch while we were in the grocery store, but it's too chaotic with 2 children. I try to figure it all out. I'll have to film another time with Nate with me. Um, we got a chocolate cake because Everly's 3rd birthday is tomorrow, so that's super exciting. We also got pink balloons and some little presents. Uh, it's hard to buy presents on the road because they're not here yet, so We got some things like coloring pages and stickers and some little beach toys for when we go down to the beach, and then we'll just leave them here when we go. Our backpacks are full and they're kind of heavy, so got to hurry up and get home.
Go, go, go, go, go, go, go! Is it your birthday?
Yeah.
Whose birthday is it? Mine.
Is it your birthday?
What's out there?
Cake and brownies and balloons! Oh my God, you want to hear it? What is this? Press.
Wait, how old are you?
3. You're 3?
Are you Everly 3?
Yeah. It has colors, activities, and other stuff I can't read in Portuguese.
Yeah!
What are you doing?
Mm, how's it going? Good.
Like it?
Good.
Today is Everly's third birthday, and to celebrate, for dinner we're going out for pizza at this little local Italian restaurant. Really, really good food. That was her request. She wanted pizza for dinner, so that's what we're gonna do. Oh, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you. What does it taste like? Oranges. I'm getting my own.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5 backpacks. I'm taking the long way. These kids and their elevators. Get your steps in, kids. Here's the deal. The challenge is I'm gonna give you €10 each. You have to find something that none of us have had before. Whoever has the best thing— can't be candy. One thing can be candy. Okay, whoever has the best thing gets 5 bucks. Okay, gets 5 bucks. $5.
$5.
$5 US dollars. $5 US dollars. Okay. Go! Don't let her see it. I can't tell you what it was. All right, how much was that?
Uh, it was $2. $2. So I got 8 more.
Uh-oh, uh-oh, uh-oh. Go! You're at $5.50.
I already found one. It looks good for lunch.
Really? Maybe.
Uh, it was at $3.49.
Okay, so you're done.
Good haul.
All right.
I really want that $5.
All right, high five.
Good job. I want to try that.
That counts. I'm not sure I want it, but you can try it. It's yours. It might be a loser.
Surprise, perfect one.
1, 2, plus the bag, plus the bag, 3, 4, and on my back too. That's 5. Oh, that's 7. We're back home. We're ready to try this stuff out, so let's see what we got.
So I got Oreos and they're caramel flavored and vanilla flavored. And then I got my lunch. Mom thinks it looks nasty. If you think it looks nasty, put it in the comments. I'm gonna eat that for lunch. And then I got ruffles that apparently taste like ham. I got like a drink that I've never seen before. Some pastry, some candy, and then I got these mini fries.
Yeah, sweet.
Smells like—
Heaven. Heaven in a bowl.
Yeah. I can smell it from here.
Okay, so this stuff is like eggs and tuna and beans, all cold. Good?
It's good.
It's good?
It's good. All right, I'll definitely eat this for lunch.
Smell-o-vision. Can't scoop it.
Just use your teeth. Don't like it.
It's not good. Smells like tuna. It's cuz it's tuna.
Smell good?
Smells fine. Tastes fine. It tastes like a tuna fish sandwich without the sandwich and the mayo.
Tuna fish.
It's fine.
Okay, should we try this? Yes. Wait, Mom's going to try it.
Cold beans.
Oh my God, I'm such a texture person. This looks so gross. Oh, it's so dry. Ew, it's so disgusting. I don't like it. Me and Mom both don't like it. It is good. Okay, that definitely doesn't mean— It's not as bad as I thought it would be. Yeah, it tastes like a tuna fish sandwich. It's not delicious.
It tastes like a tuna fish sandwich.
It's like Tastes like a dry tuna fish can.
Okay.
That's good. I like it.
What kind is it?
It's like first like got a lot of flavor and then fades down.
Okay.
You guys should try it. Okay. Oh, it's um, not cold like it should be. It needs to be cold. It's guava. It's guava.
Is it guava?
It's guava juice.
All right. Cheers.
I need some rum with this.
Need some rum? That's good.
Way better than cold tuna fish and beans.
So far that's the best. So far everybody agrees with that one.
Oh, oh, that's not good.
Hmm, it does— it smells like barbecue. Oh, she's going in.
Oh wait, wait, wait, I gotta— I gotta go first because it's mine. Okay, ham ruffle chip.
Just eat it.
That's so dramatic. Not the best. It really tastes— it tastes like salt. Tastes like ham. I like it.
Crunchy ham. So that would be kind of like just bacon. So it's bacon chips.
Yeah, I like these.
That's not bacon chips. That's not barbecue.
It tastes like hot dog.
Hot dog?
It's hot dog chips.
Yeah, that's probably about right. Thumbs down.
I say thumbs up. I like them.
Yeah, it's not winning.
Don't smell the best.
No, doesn't smell like potatoes and salt.
Is it a flavor? It's really plain. Got no flavor and not enough salt. Does anything have enough salt for you? Smells like a bag. Yeah. Ew, smells terrible. It's like a chip cut into strips with no flavor or salt.
What do you think, Ev? Are they good?
Yeah.
Okay, I'm gonna try them. You like these? Yeah. They taste like cardboard. They were 1 euro.
I regret picking those. I also brought something. This fruit I saw somewhere that somebody bought this.
Weird though, you didn't, you didn't cut it. It looks like you cut a bunch of stuff off of it. Oh, it feels weird. It's like bumpy.
Oh, it is weird. Anyways, I saw this video of a guy. Someone told him it's the best fruit they've ever had in their whole life, so he had to buy one. So then I thought, best fruit of your whole life? I feel like today's the day. Wow, it's really hard.
Um, is it raw? Oh my gosh, best, best fruit of your life.
Tastes like bubble bath.
What?
Awesome.
Awesome.
Oh my gosh, it legitimately tastes like Everly's bath. Not that I've tasted her bath, right? Oh, it's so awful. That's not good.
Nah. It's spicy.
It's so hot.
I'm not looking forward to this now that I've seen your guys' reaction.
It's nasty. It is really nasty. Oh, you're eating it.
Oh, it's better than ham chips.
That is good. Yeah, like a croissant and like caramel. That's good. That's like a croissant, like a hard croissant.
Okay, hun, what do you think? Better than bath water? They're okay, not my favorite. I would eat them with coffee. These are like childproof packages.
That smells good. That is gonna win the competition.
All right, pass them out. You don't hoard them for yourself. Thank you.
I don't really like them.
You're so lying. Look at your face. Ew.
Yeah, it's not good. I prefer the original Oreo. It smells like aromatherapy candles, like a Christmas candle where they're like, oh, let's make it Smell like caramel.
It tastes like an artificial sweetened candle.
After Oreos, I eat ham.
Okay, let's vote. Oh, forgot one. Are we all sucking on one lollipop?
Vanilla, raspberry, chocolate and vanilla, and strawberry. Lollipops unite!
Lollipop gang. 1, 2, 3. Which one out of all the things that you've had, which one is the best? I would say the juice, actually. I think every— I think that everybody liked the juice. Everybody— everything else we had was like somebody didn't like it, but everybody liked the juice. The juice! Winner! You get $5, sir. Congratulations.
Next time, don't you dare bean casserole Who knows? What else? What else we going to pick? No one else is going to like— I should have chosen sushi. You win the most disgusting award.
No, that's the bacon chips. Asher, what are you going to spend your $5 on?
More candy. No, no, more bacon chips.
More bacon chips.
How much were these?
