In this YouTube short, small‑business owner Nick Hutchison asks where to focus hiring as his team grows. The responder (Speaker B) recommends a practical 30‑day journaling exercise: write down every problem encountered each day, look for recurring themes, and determine whether each issue stems from a missing hire, an unassigned responsibility, or a need to generate more business. By documenting and analyzing these patterns, the owner can make data‑driven hiring decisions rather than guessing.

Brian, as a small business owner, I wear many hats and I feel like I'm constantly putting out fires. And as my team starts to grow, where should I prioritize in terms of hiring?
What a great question. As we look back, there's probably a lot of problems that we face. The multiple hat thing, I mean, I relate to that as a leader. And you're recruiting here, you're solving problems there, you're talking to a customer there. What I found worked is journaling over 30 days and writing down the actual problems that you faced. And is there recurring themes of problems that are related to each other but it's a larger problem that you could solve for either by hiring someone or is there a responsibility that's not assigned today? The third one could be for many of us, we need to generate more business. But all of those problems over a 30-day period, you should document and journal and figure out where the breakdown is. And that will help you make informed decisions and you're going to respond to what's actually happening in your business and be able to solve for what needs to be solved for versus just guessing at this.
