Hasard Lee, a pilot, says Top Gun nails the communications and low-altitude flying but takes liberties for drama. The frequent dogfights with enemy F-14s wouldn't happen in real operations, though military advisors helped keep other details grounded.

I'm just curious, what percentage of Top Gun is accurate? Do you watch the movie and analyze like piece by piece and go, oh, that's just ridiculous, or oh, that's very accurate?
I thought it was a very good movie. So the storyline was great. The cinematography was fantastic. They had a lot of military advisors on it. So the actual communication was pretty good in terms of that mission and like flying low and only sending in 4 F-18s. They'd all get shot down. So I think as a pilot, I can really appreciate it. And I like the effort that they put into it. Having done all these videos on YouTube and stuff, I understand that you have to kind of watch it down a little bit to make it exciting to the lay audience. But I thought it was a good movie, but there are obviously a lot of glaring issues. We don't just go take up, you know, enemy F-14s all the time.
