Mitch Harrison's Running on Full argues that entrepreneurs need "no-work zones"—physical spaces, mental states, or calendar blocks where work is banned. Without them, founders burn out and abandon their businesses. Harrison illustrates with his own example: shutting down his computer to be present with his 11-month-old son.

One of my favorite takeaways from this book, Running on Full by author Mitch Harrison, is that we all need no-work zones. A no-work zone is a place that you can go in your home, in your office, in your mind, or in your calendar where you're not allowed to work. And if that sounds unreasonable to you, you're not disciplined. You are addicted to your work. You see, there are so many entrepreneurs, small business owners in the Book Thinkers following that sacrifice their typical 9 to 5 and they find themselves handcuffed to their business working 24/7. Well, you're going to end up running on empty. You're going to burn out. And that's what this book is all about solving, making sure that you can sustainably do the work that you're best positioned to do without ever hitting that E, meaning you're empty and you end up giving up your business as a result of it. These no-work zones or these periods of rest, they help us to set some boundaries around what is work and what is not work. Now, for me, I have an 11-month-old baby boy, and having these boundaries allow me to shut the computer off even though there's more work to do and spend time with him, which is so much more fulfilling. Another benefit to a no-work zone is the opportunity to be in the present, not focused on task management, not focused on some type of future situation in your business, not worrying about what happened yesterday, but having time in the calendar that says focus on now, be here now. And that skill is atrophying for so many of us as AI and computers just take over so much of our lives. Think about the metaphor. If your car runs out of gas, your day might be ruined. But if you run out of gas, you might ruin the next couple of months or years of your life. If you want to install more rest into your life, grab a copy of Running on Full.
