And the reason that doesn't feel right is because society has conditioned us to put everybody else first, even at the expense of ourselves. And so in this book, Selfish Is a Superpower, by author Jessica Dennehy, she details her own experience living that lie. She puts her kids first at the expense of her marriage, her business, and even her own mental headspace. And everything falls apart. But once she starts to rewire her brain, focus on herself, everything gets better. So I'm happy that I read this before having my very first kid so that I can make sure I focus on myself and my relationships don't fall apart as a result.
