Steven starts each workday with a prayer to the Muse, a practice he's used since age 52. He treats it like entering a dojo: bowing, setting aside ego, and asking for guidance. He positions himself as a conduit rather than a controller, emphasizing humility and service in creative work.

Now, I always start each working day, I say a prayer to the Muse, you know, that a friend of mine once gave me this official sort of prayer. So that is a practice, I guess. It's sort of like if you're entering the dojo to study martial arts or meditation, you know, you put your hands together and you bow to the sensei and efface your ego. You're entering kind of a sacred space. You're giving up your own desire to control anything. And you're essentially asking the goddess or the universe, help me. I'm here at your service. You know, show me the way, give me something. And at least since when I was 52 years old, it has worked. So I don't know if it worked for anybody else, but that attitude of humility and of being at the service of something that you can't command or you can only invoke it, that's to me the proper attitude.
