In this solo YouTube segment, Nick Hutchison shares a key insight from Gaur Gopal Das’s book Life’s Amazing Secrets: gratitude precedes happiness, not the other way around. He explains how he adopted a daily gratitude practice—writing three things he’s grateful for each day, using tools like The 6‑Minute Diary and a wrist tattoo marked “1‑2‑3” as a subconscious cue. Hutchison cites research indicating that even short‑term gratitude exercises can have lasting happiness benefits, describing the “compound effect.” He promotes the book as a guide for anyone seeking more gratitude in 2021 and teases an upcoming podcast interview with Gaur Gopal Das, inviting viewers to submit questions. The video blends personal anecdote, motivational advice, and a call‑to‑action for both the book and the podcast.

Did you know that it's not happy people that are grateful, but it's grateful people that are happy? I'll say that one more time. Did you know that it's not happy people that are grateful, but it's grateful people that are happy? See, today's tip is going to come from this book right here, Life's Amazing Secrets by Gore Gopaldas. The subtitle reads, How to Find Balance and Purpose in Your Life. I read this book because I have an upcoming podcast interview with Gore about this book. And I wanted to do a deep dive and truly understand what makes him so popular. He has millions of followers on his social media, and his videos often go viral on Facebook and YouTube and Instagram and other platforms. What makes him so special? And so when I was going through the book, something that stood out to me was that line about gratitude. Everybody thinks that you need to set these outcomes in life. Once you achieve them, you'll be happy, and once you're happy, then you can be grateful for all the blessings, right? But that's not necessarily true. And in my personal experience, I've become a very different person from intentionally practicing gratitude. So every day, a couple years ago when I read the benefits of gratitude, I would start to journal. And I would journal about things I was grateful for. And then I fell into the routine of every single day, I'm going to pick out 3 things that I'm grateful for and journal about them. Whether it was just 1 line or even 1 word sometimes, or up to a couple paragraphs, I would make myself do this on a daily basis. And at first nothing really changed, but over time people started to say, wow, you seem happy, you seem joyful, you seem chipper, what's going on? And I think it was that intentional cultivate— uh, the intentional act of cultivating gratitude in my life. I started to feel better. And so I did some more research and there are studies showing that if you practice gratitude for just a couple of weeks in a row, you still feel the benefits of that years later in your happiness, which blew my mind, right? It's the compound effect at work. And so that line in the book, it's not happy people that are grateful, it's grateful people that are then happy. Intentionally practicing the gratitude is what makes you happy. And so I've been implementing some different morning routines and trying things out. I fell out of that practice of journaling about what I was grateful for, but now I've picked that back up. And I just, I got this new journal, The 6 Minute Diary, which each and every day it brings you through some gratefulness-related activities and I'm going to really bring this back into my life in 2021. I also have a tattoo on my wrist that just shows the numbers 1, 2, and 3, and that's sort of subconscious positive neuro-linguistic programming at work. Every time I see those numbers, my subconscious feels better. I'm reflecting on things I'm grateful for, and if I consciously catch it in the morning, which doesn't always happen, I look down and I meditate on 3 things I'm grateful for. So if you're looking for a book that can help you get over that leap. If you know that you want to be more grateful in 2021, then I would highly recommend Life's Amazing Secrets.
