In this short monologue, Nick Hutchison shares a simple acronym—MEDS—to combat negativity, standing for Mindfulness, Exercise, Diet, and Sleep. He credits the self‑help book Positive Mindshift by Donald Sandell as the source of these four pillars. Hutchison explains each component: mindfulness as staying present to reduce reaction lag; exercise for endorphin‑driven mood lifts and anxiety reduction; diet as the foundation of brain and body performance; and sleep as a non‑negotiable, illustrated by his use of an Oura Ring to monitor rest. He urges viewers to read the book and apply the MEDS principles to lead a more positive life.
Chapters
Here is the secret to overcoming negativity. Here it is: take your MEDS. And in this case, MEDS actually stands for mindfulness, exercise, diet, and sleep. And I learned all about them in this book right here, Positive Mindshift, by author Donald Sandell. Mindfulness is the first of the 4 ingredients. It means be where your feet are, stay in the present moment, improve the space between the input to your brain and your reaction to it. And in this book, Donald outlines some great exercises and activities that you can use to cultivate more mindfulness. Number 2 is exercise. In the morning when I exercise and I get the blood flowing, the exercise endorphins pumping, I feel amazing. Exercise has been shown to mitigate the effects of anxiety and depression. You need exercise. Number 3 is diet. What you put into your body has a major impact on on your brain's ability to function and your body's ability to function. You don't want to go through your day eating bad food because you're going to feel bad. And number 4, sleep. Huge non-negotiable in my life. I actually wear this Oura Ring on my finger because sleep matters so much. If you wouldn't go try to run a marathon on a sprained ankle, right, your performance would suffer. But so many of us are trying to live positive lives while we're sleep deprived. It doesn't make any sense. You're handicapping yourself. To learn more about these, Check out this book right here, Positive Mindshift, and take your meds.
