Some thoughts on remote work, and where my remote work journey began!

Nick Hutchison convinced his software company to let him work remotely in 2017, then built Book Thinkers as remote-first from the start. He cites three concrete wins: access to global talent, lower operational costs, and less management overhead for productive remote workers.

Here's a fun story that dates back before Book Thinkers, which is not a period of time that I talk about a lot. Back in 2017, working for a software company, I decided to approach them and advocate for remote work. This was a new concept at the time that I had read about in a couple of good books, and thankfully they said yes, despite the fact that most of their workforce was location dependent in the offices that we were working in. And over the next couple of years, I worked from all these different places, different countries, different states, and I saw so many competitive advantages from an employee's perspective perspective as I was on the road. So as I started to build Book Thinkers, I knew from day one that this business had to not only encourage remote work, but that it would be a remote work organization. And then I stumbled across this book, The Remote Work Handbook by author Mary Ann Snow, and it points out so many competitive advantages for operationalizing your business and leaning towards remote work. And here are my top 3. Number 1, you have a much larger talent pool to select from as a remote work employer because you get to access the entire world. Number 2, you have much lower fixed costs because you don't have to worry about renting office space or office supplies or anything like that. And number 3, if you have a highly productive remote work employee, they need much less management than somebody in the office who's dealing with office talk and water cooler talk and a commute back and forth. So I'm an advocate. What about you?
