Steven Pressfield believes writers should invoke the muse like Homer did in The Odyssey, acting as vessels for ideas rather than their originators. The universe constantly offers ideas to everyone, but only those who execute them get the reward.

Pressfield has a cool thing too where he believes in the muse, the invocation of the muse from The Odyssey, which is essentially that he's a vessel for external ideas to flow through him. So he doesn't question what he's writing, he just writes it.
I love the idea that the universe is always putting out ideas and then somebody is like, you know, whoever executes upon that idea, like the universe gives the idea to everyone and whoever just takes it and executes on it will be rewarded for it.
